I HE EXPRESS. Fireside. Thought* For the Month. The summer crops are being laid by or soon will be. The manner in Which this is done is far from being important. Cottons fields in billy feigions should be left with I lie sur face as nearly flat as possible, to pro tent the washing, so apt to occur in a loose, mellow, clean soil. Washing away of the soil lias been one of the greatest evils of extended cotton cul* tme. Grain and grass growing far mers have no conception of it. In letel regions, where there is danger of too much water in the Boil, hut hone of washing, it is better to leave good ridges or beds. In all cases crops ought to be laid by perfectly clean—no grass or weeds left to divide the soil food with the maturing crops. Especially if the land is to be planted in cotton again the ensuring year, no grass should he allowed to mature seed. If per mitted to seed, it will double the work of hoeing the succeeding crops, weth er cotton or corn. Not only so, Imt if the cotton is followed by gruin, the latter Will in such case be suc ceeded by a larger crop of grass, the goods of which will again give troub le in the cotton Which follows. We have often thought that with some cure in preventing the seeding of crahgrasa, this pest of oui farmers might be eradicated; certainly it could he kept within much narrower bounds. We have often noticed that where portions of fields were laid by grassy, the same pans would be more grassy, the next year than thosejaid by clean. The times at which a crop should be laid by depends on circumstances. ‘Corn should receive its last plough ing (a every shallow one) about the lime it is preparing to tassel. But, if from any cause, the ploughing does not clean it ihorouglily, it should be hoed subsequently. Cotton ought, to have u steady moderate growth up to the first of August in Northern parts of the “belt,” a little later towards the gulf. Whatever work ings are necessary to' insure this, should be given if. As long as it is worked, it will continue to grow, un less extreme drought prevuils. 8WKKT POTATOES. Slip or vines of the early varieties, like the St. Domingo, (is the South ern Queen the same) may bo set out during this month, and will yet muke a good crop. The lute plauted will keep best through the winter. Where thoEe started early have cov ered the ground, and can no longer be ploughed or hoed, pull out with hand any grass among them. Work well those already, planted, and Continue to plant all available land in eurly varieties. Where vines for ploughing under, or hay, is the object, peas muy be sown in the middle of August on rich lutid. No better preparation for a wheat crop than to sow down in peas, the land intended for it. Try (on a a small scale if you prefer) the South Carolina plan of applying 44 Ash Elements” to the peus. RUTABAGAS. For stock feed, the sweet potato is superior to the turnip— more easily raised and more nutritious, and for said purpose, we have advised its more extended cultivation. Mules, cows, hogs, sheep and poultry might be very profitably fed a purt ration of potatoes lor three or more months, •ay fiom October to January. An exceeding- ly fine tilth is ulso essential to a good crop—hardly less so than manure. A grey soil is best adapted to the turuip, but it will grow ouany, when treated as above. Some advocate sowing early in July.
