THE EXPRESS. Cedartown, August 1 Bt JNO. VT. RADLEY, Editor. Tin Express has ■ larger clrcu- aMaa than any ether newspaper pahttshaft In the 38th Senatorial roil COXORK88, HON. G-EO. N. LESTER, "Close Up Boys I” Dr. fMtwrt Speech lut Saturday. We hare neither time nor space to (ire an extended account of the meet ing and speech of Dr. Felton here on Saturday Inst. We will any tlmt we are ia excellent humor, iwd in excel lent spirits orer the result, and the friends of Lester are in a better hu- aaes and in higher spirits tliun we hare erer seen them since the open ing of the camimign. It was the | r • railing opinion umong them, freely and frequently expressed, that the Doctor was “under hack" and (hath s “hallelujah lick" was but the echo, the faint echo of its former self. There was no warmth, no enthusi asm manifested and the miserable failure of the meeting gare confl deuce to many Lester men who were before hopeless. The eerdict of the ■ore oaudid supporters of Felton was that he had gained nothing by his risit and speech, while his oppo ■sots were jubilant oxer the results. He oame here alone, it was his ap pointment, there was no opponent to meet him, he made his speech and west away, leaving his friends irri tated, uneasy and in had humor and hiseuemiss hopeful end confident. Is this not ao augury of our success? Ws seldom see its parallel in politic al campaigning. We will notice only two or three points in Dr. Felton's speech. His time was chiefly consumed in eulo- siag himself and abusing Judge Les. ter. He repeated here the churges which he made against Lester iu L’artsrsville and which he had not the courage and manliness to repeat at Daltou, where Lester had an op. psrtunity of replying to them. We had almost pronounoed this conduct as unmanly, dishonorable and cow ardly in the extreme, but we will state the facta and leavs it to our readers to form their own opinion ns to whether Dr. Feltou is a fair and honorable adversary. These charges were first made by Dr. Felton at Oartersville where lie thought he had his opponent at a disadvantage and sought to crush him at one blow; two days after they met at Dalton in joint discussion, Judge Lester hav ing the conclusion, and Dr. Felton grieved that in the heat of discussion they had ever been made. After the Dalton discussion lie refused to meet Judge Lester again and is now going over tha district aloue, with no oue to answer him, repeating those char ges which he had not the nerve to re peat in the presence of Judge Lester at Dalton. This is a plain, simple statement of facts. They need no coloring. If such conduct as this meets with the approbation of the voters of this district, u defeut ut their hands will be honorable. Again at the outset of his speech, Dr. Fel ton stated that he had expected to meet Judge Lester here and would have boon willing to discuss with him hod he oome. Was this state- meut truth? Dr. Felton had notified Judge Lester by a letter which we publish in to-duys issue of our paper, that he was not williug to jointly canvass the distriot with him and would not for the present meet him in joint disoussion. And more than this, he had been specially requested by a letter from a gentleman here, to meet Judge Lester on Saturday last, and this he fiatly refused to do, say- ing that be preferred meeting hit friend? alone without a barbecue or joint discussion. How then, under these circumstances, could Dr. Fel ton have expected to meet Judge Lester on Saturday. These are sim ple facts. They need no coloring. We ask in all candor wsb the state ment troth, and if it was bet, why did Dr. Felton make it? It was to smooth over his disgraceful back down. And why does he not can vass with Judge Lester. His reason it that he has such an “abhorrence of personalities.” Ws have never in our lifetime beard any political speeches contain ing more abuse than some of the speeohes of Dr. Felton. This man, who called all the prominent men in the dicuiM'wlio opposed him by suck names as “trip, blanche und sweet heart,” and poured out bis whole vo cabulary of ia Motive and abuse up on their public und private charac ters; who is now trumpeting over the dislrictsrinnders against Judge la>s- ter which if true ought to oonsign him to n felons cell; who when he ceases to pruise himself begins to villify all those who actively oppose him, now comes forward as a man of peace, a meek and gentle lamb who hml rather be “in his little koine over there” than to wound the feel- ingB of a fellow being. It is owing altogether to whose “ox is gored” whether the Doctor has an “abhor rence of personalities.” The following letter addressed to one of our citizens will explain why HO\. GKO. N. LESTKR did not address the people of I’olk lust Sat urday: Oartersville Ga. July 19, 1878. My Desk Sir:—I have your curd proposing u barbecue and juintdiscus- sion on Saturday tile 27th. As this is my appointment, 1 prefer to meet my friends that day without u bar becue or joint discussion. Of course this does not prevent u barbecue or speaking appointment of Judge Lester at any other dny. With greut rsipect, your obedientservant, W. II. Fkltox.. Correspondence, Dalton, Ga., July 13, 1878. Hon H«h. II. Felton: Dkaii Sir— After mature reflec tion, the propriety of a joint cutivuss of the 7th Congressional District by us, winch I proposed to you ut Car- tersville on the 11th iust., is deeply impressed upon mv mind. I am firmly convinced that a joint canvass of the entire District on fair and equal terms ns to u division ol' time, coupled witli an agreement that we alternate as to the conclusion, is the wisest, fairest and best course for us to pursue, and that such u course will be must acceptable to the people. Allow me to suggest the following considerations in favor of a joint canvass: 1. It will enable the peoplo to sec and hear the cundidutes togethernnd judge of their comparative qualifica tions and claims. 2. It will avoid the repeated assem bling of the people of the same place or vicinity. 3. It will save to the cundidutes both labor and expense. 4. And, above all, it will proteot each candidate against any false charges or misrepresentations that may be made in his absence, when he has no opportunity to meet und refute them. I, therefore, renew to you the pro position thutjwe canvass the entire Distriot jointly and together upon fair, just und equitable terms, to be agreed upon by us or our friunds. Hoping to liuve an early and a favorable answer to this proposition, I uni your obedient servant, Oeu. N. Luster. Oartersville, (Ia., July 19, 1878. Hon. U. TV. Lester: Dear Sir—In reply to your letter of the 13th soliciting a joint canvuss of the 7th Congressional District, I must say 1 respectfully decline for the present to enter upou such an urrungemeut. A protracted canvass of three months and a half is neither conven ient nor desirable, beginning in the heated term. When I desire joint discussion I will invite you specially to meet me at certain designated points. You can do the same with nte at certain appointments of your mnk.. ing; otherwise each candidate will make his own appointments and till them at itis own convenience. I prefer to let the whole matter retnuin in this shape, subject to any change which future developments may sug gest to us. Very respectfully your obedient servant, W. H. Felton. The times and plaoea for holding Congressional conventions in the different Distriot ol the State, so far determined on, are as follows: First Distriot Savannah, August 28th. Since I became a candidate for congress 1 have received piles of let ters from friends in every part of this district, and many from friends out side of this district. I am answering these letters just as rapidly as I can, hut my time, thus fur, has been so much occupied that many of them are still unan swered.
