THE EX PRESS. Cfidai-town, September 19th. ~W¥i7iQ-To"u¥r •‘WHERE.” A hundred yuars hence where shall I lu? IVul, cermlnly—dead long ago. This body that is now so much to jw, will then be nothing to me. U will have perished, even my grave stone will begin to show signs of age und neglect. I shall bo dead, out of iniud, passed away, forgotten. No one will want me, miss me, think ot me. The world will go ou with* out me. llow little, after all is the world to mol How little am I to the world! lint wh**u and whut shall I he? I shall ho saved or a lost soul. Saved without tear 01 danger of perdition; or loKt, vviti-.oni hope of salvation. The thought is awful, but it ought to be dwelt upon some times A gay French Nobleman, after a short ab sence, flew to see the lady he loved, lie bounds up the stairs and burst joyously into her room. There was nothing there hut an open oofllu, and in it a lifeless corpse. The lady had died of smallpox and every ono had fled and left the nwlul ruins of a lovely and sinful woman. The great thought cn ored that man’s soul as he stood a few moments on that dreadful threshold uud it did its work. He turned and went Blowly down stairs, and the gay world kuow him no more. It is difficult to con centrate the powers of one’s soul on the tremendous thought. A few years hence I shall be be a saved or a lost soul, but when once we have it fast, it is almost omnipotent. The is no middle alternative. Not this man, or that man but 1. Nakod and alone the soul stands before God; friends are gone, work, plans, plea sures, troubles, all fall off and vanish into nothing, aud God and the soul staud face to face. The soul scung the face of God, to see whether there is welcome or repulsion.butGod bids the soul look at itself, it is already saved or not. There is no arbitrary sentence of God. The soul sees the work of life written upon itself, aud it passes sentence upon itself. To anticipate this final judgment is true wisdom. It will have to bo enacted a few years hence, and it may be to-morrow. The awakened soul cau tolorate no uncertainty. It suyB to itself, not “Shall I be saved some day?” but “Am I saved now,” for now is the ouly moment wo know anything about, and the only time that is our owu. “How shall I be saved?” Go down on your knees ulone before God, confess your sins one by one, forsake them, make res titution, amend jour life and that moment will be your day of salva tion. Yet some souls will uot do it. They are too idle or too busy, they postpone it—-they have never really faced the awful responsibility of their personal relation to God. They hide iu a crowd, they have never caught God’s eye. They look here and there, anywhere but into the face of God. There is not a lost soul, but God bus put Ilia arms around it, and looked in its face os a father, and it has turned awuy and rejected his love. Yet even now for all who have life uud reason comes the glo rious word, “Now is the day of sal vation.” Will you too, reject the message?—Eng. SMALLTALK.
