THE EXPRESS. rto .n, September 26th. AN ACTIVE LIFE. a J jstph Ecclcston Johnston, who has been nominated ns the dem ocratic conservative candidate for Ootigress in the Richmond (Vu.) district, is in the seventy-seoond year of his age, having been horn in Prince Edward County, Vn„ Fehru- ary, 1807. He graduated at West Point as a second lieutenant in 182!) and served in Florida against the Seminole Indians, a portion of the time on the staff of Gen. Winded Scott In 1837 he resigned his com mission to e igege in civil engineer ing, but in 1838 re-entered the ser vice i.s first lieutenant of topograph ical engineers, and lor gallantry in Fi »riJa was breve tied captain. At t‘ • siege of Vera Cruz, Mexico, he served on engineer duty, was appoin ted lieutenant of colonel voltigeurs; af Cerro Gordo received severe wounds and was breveted major and colonel. He afterwards participated in the battles of Contreras, Chnru- hn«co, Molino del Key, Ghnpultepec and the final assault on the City of Mexico, being again wounded at the latter place. In 1855 General John ston was appointed lieutenant of cav alry, and took part in the Utali ex pedition as inspector general. In 18(10 he was appointed quartermaster general with tho rank of brigadier gi-ueral, which position he resigned in 1801 to follow the fortunes of Virginia. His career in the Confed erate army, where he rose from the l ank of major general to that of a full general, is familiar to the public. He was early wounded in the advance upon McClellan, and was immediate ly succeeded by Gen. Robert E. Lee, and subsequently, as is known, his military operations, were in the Southwest. After the war General Johnston engaged in the insurance business in tho South, with head quarters ut Atlanta, Ga., and a few months ago made his home in Rich mond, Va. Gen. Johnston married a sister of the Hon. Robert McLune, of Rultimore, who is an aspirant for the democratic Congressional uopii- . nation in the fourth Maryland dis trict. A ROUT THE 1’ULKE. Every intelligent person should know how to ascertain the si ate ol the pulse in health; then by compar ing it with whut it was when he is uiiing he may have some idea of the case. Parents slum Id ku'dw the healthy pulse of each child, us now and then a person is horn with a remurkably slow or fast pulse, and tin- very case in hand may he ol that peculiarity. A'l infant’s pulse is 140; u child of seven years, about eighty; and from twenty to sixty years, it it, seventy h.-uis a minute, declining to sivy at loiii'score. A healthful • 'rowa person's pulse beau seventy times a minute. There may he good luukli down to sixty; but if the pulse always exceeds seventy there is a disease. Tho nmchino is working itself out; there is fever und infiam- ,nation somewhere, and the body is feeding on itself—as in consumption, when the pulse is quick, that is, over sixty, gradually increasing with de creased. chances of cure, until it •reaches 110 or 120. when death comes before many days. When the pulse is over seventy for months, and them is a slight cough, the Iftngs are affected. ‘Have you a curd, sir?’ asked the door-keeper or the hoc up. The man looked a little surprised, and answer ed; ‘Card ? No! I don’t carry a pack.’ ‘Where a r e you from ?’ inquired the '1«or-keHoor. ‘North Garoliny* was lop reply. Wlfiit do you do down in North Carolina when you go visiting? Don’t yon send a card to the man von want to see?’ The ‘tar-hcel’ laughed right out. ‘Lors-a-niiiary!’ ho •■xelaimed. ‘Wv, wo ride up to a iV’lor’s fence and holler to him to tie his dog; and then we light and go •D.tr, am, Said a sable orator, ‘two r aids through dis world. It was then that Mariar fired he bread board at him, and remark- a that, she wasent going to step the irrillation of blood in her legs for o bald headed old pennypincher. COTTON SEED OIL MILLS AT THE SOUTH. The cotton seed oil manufactures of the Southern States are feeling very jubilant over the prospects of u large cotton crop, aud quite u number ure giving orders for the enlargement of the mills for producing the oil. Some of the largest concerns con sume about 125 tons of seed per day. The past season has been less profit able than usu d to manufacturers, hut previously the making of the oil has been very mmunerutivv. Seed worth *7 to *8 per ton yields from 30 to 40 gallons of oil, worth 40 to 50 cents per. gallon, and the cake, pro duced at the rate of 750lbs per ton, is worth about $20 per ton. There is also a remainder of 20 lbs of lint to every ton of seed, that is usually worth 0 to 7 cents to the pound. A thoughtful observer on woman’s rights comes to their defense very ef fectively as follows: I have seen wo men so delicate that they were afraid to ride, for fear of the horse running away; afraid to walk for fear the dew might fall; afraid to sail for fear tho boat might upset; but I never saw one that was afraid to get married, which is more risklul than all the others put together. Now, they said to her, you can go in and see him; but remember that lie is very sick with heart disease and don’t say a word that will trouble him. Then she walked in, sat down on the edge of a chair, and remarked cheerfully, as she shook her head.— Ah—ah!—m!— sad, ain’t it? Thought I’d jest run in cause they said there wuz no knowin how soon you might drop o(T!
