DR. FELTON’S SPEECH.
The oitzens of Cedartowu mid
surrounding country had.an oppor
tunity last Saturday of hearing an
other speech from tho Independent
champion for Congress in this dis
trict. He had an audieneeof about
three hundred, a goodly per cent,
from Floyd county. The doclor ut
tered no new argument—he simply
ashed the -same old stories that
have long since been refuted by
Judge Lester’s friends. Ho made a
strong effort to convince his hearers
that his r-e-o-o-r-d was simon pure.
In fact, his speech was almost exclu
sively devoted to his record. He bus
got to the point where he alludes to
his opponent as “my honorable op-
potent.” If he verily believes Judge
Lester to be the rascally knave that
he represents him to be, how, oh, bow
can he be honorable? Oh l Doctor,
you know these charges are ground
less, so therefore, no one blames you
lor calling him your “honorable op
ponent.” The Doctor took strong
grounds for greenbacks, free whisky,
tobacco, &c. That is no new theory.
It is the democratic doctrine in the
We8t and South. All democrats and
republicans of the two sections Hunt
ed ugree there. Judge Lester’s views
are identical in this particular.
The Doctor laid particular stress
upon greenbacks. He said if lie lmd
bis way he would flood the country
with them. He is not ahe .d of Les
ter there, for he, too, is a greenback-

0ctl0-5t
He made earnest appeals to the
homey listed farmers, the wealth
producers of the country. He inti
mated that from among these his
main support came. Oh! how he
sympathized with them. Prices were
low. Wages were low. Mules, horses
and cattle were low. Cotton was
bringing nothing. Oertniuly, doctor
the democratic party agrees with you
in this particular. Judge Lester is
hand and hand with you, only lie
goes a few steps further. While these
“horny listed farmers” (as you choose
to call them) are working for from 8
to 15 dollars amonth, you are getting
nearly ,000 a month and not trying
to reduce it. You salary is $5,000
a year and you have six mouths out
of that year to make this canvass in.
Is this economy ? While you ad
vocate cheaper tobacco, cheaper whis
ky, cheaper matches, would it not be
wholesome for our bankrupt people
for you to advocate cheaper Congress
men? Judge Lester advocates it,
and promises to introduce u bill for
that reduction of the salaries of Con
gressmen. It is ull bosh to tell (he
people that you cannot live on less.
During the war the salary of U. S.
Congressmen was $5,000. Then
greenbacks were ubout 30 cents; this
would make their salaries then ubout
$1,500. 'They lived and prospered
and at each election there was iu
lack of men willing to sacriliue them
SOl VC8.
Tliedotor with a hurrah informed
the audience that Holtzclaw hud
proffered to divide time at Tilton,
whereupon he refused him, saying,
that it Judge Lester were present he
would consent, but this being u Les*
ter-IIollzcluw canvass he would not
gratify thortf both. He has gratified
Jutlg<T Lester but lew times in this
p.trtioular, and it strikes one acquain
ted with it that the gratification wus
ou the other side of the house. But
before we have dismissed this por
tion of the speech: The doctor said
he told Holtzcaw that if he could
find one half dozer, respectable Re
publicans with whom he consulted
before he announced himself, or
could show six that were going to
vote for him, he would recognize him
as a candidate of that party. Right
here stick a pin. Does not the doc
tor show a little inconsistency here ?
Does he not virtually give the lio to
all his pretentions ? Does not the
doctor hold as his “stock in trade”
this indepeudancy which he is not
willing to grant Holtzclaw ? Sup
pose Holtzclaw had done what he
deems necessary, i e t consult his
friends, is that not convening their
ideas, notions and opinions, and is
this not a Convention, the very
thing he is fighting ? Whom did
you convene, doctor, and consult in
order that you be the recognized In
dependent candidate, and where did
you hold your Conventon? Shame
on such inconsistency.
The speech did Lester good. Many
went there, we doubt not, avowed
Felton men who came away for the
one-armed hero of Perryville.
The following are the ques
tions that Mr. T. G. W. McMeekin
ndeavoied to have Dr. Felton an
swer, but he refused to ‘•recognize”
Mr. Me. Mr. McMeekin is the lead
ing r: publican of Polk county. What
do the rads think of it ?
Dr. Felton, please read this aloud
to your audience and answer these
questions propounded to you :
“Did you afctteud democratic cau
cuses and support all democratic can
didates for office, and all democratic
measures while in Congress ?”
“Did you vote to turn out Frost, a
Republican, and to seat Judge Abbot
a democrat ?”
“Did you vote against Mr. Platt, a
Republican, in favor of Mr. Goode, a
democrat ?”
“Did you vote against Mr. Fields,
a republican, and vote to seat in b a
place Mr. Mr. Dean, a democrat?”
“Did you voto for the revolutiona
ry Potter resolution, intended to un
seat President Hays and seat Tilden?”
liuve you in yourcampaign speech
es denounced Republicans as pin
derers, and advised the people to put
honest democrats in their places?”
‘.‘Have you stated that the republi
can party have brought all the finan
cial disasters upon the country, and
the only way to save the country
from these radical pluuderers is to
elect honest democrats in the place
of radicals. ?”
“Did you say the seating of Presi
dent Hayes was a fraud, the greatest
fraud ol the age, and you voted to
investigate this fraud?”
“Will you, if elected pursue the
same course towards the republican
party that you have in your two past
terms?”
