THE EXPRESS. Oedartown, December 12th. -- The army, tlmmjh Gt-nfimls Sher-1 NEW ADVERTISEMENTS JNO. W. RADLEY, Editor. The Express has a larger circu lation than any other newspaper published in the 38th Sonatoriil District Our friend, Mr. J. 8. Nathans, of the Brunswick Seaport appeal, has done gone and got married. Jim is a clever fell-»w, and w.- wish him a full measure of happiness in his mar ried life and an increased list of sub scribers coupled with full advertising columns. The lady frivnds ol “the old nun* on tho-nther-aide,” Col. Willingham, of the Free Press have presented him with a nice uew suit of clothes. Col. W. earned them, for it is a notorious fact that he mad* the host tight for Doctor Felton of any man in the dia tiiot. man and M* ig.». has spoken in favor o r th- Indian Bur uu a transfer to the War Department. 'Doubtless Gener al Sherman it influenced in the mat ter by a fear that, unless some em ployment is found for a large and increasing number of superflu ous army offices, there will he dan ger of Congrefl^ronal action reducing the lofce. Speaker Randall, who is in the best.of spirits since Ms arrival here, hits no doubt of Democratic success in 1880. His opportunities of ac quiring information in his present place ara exceptionable, and his opin ion is therefore worthy of atteution. The fact that Mr. Randall is belief ed by many to be looking for a nom ination lor the Presidency cannot be li<-ld to timka Ins present luith in Democratic success less worthy of respect, for he is young and can wait until 1884. Austin. Uro. Waterman of the L(Orange Reporter will he “sd up” next week, itsoems that the good people of La- Grunge worry the editor by wuntiug to know when he will he on his feet again. We will bet he gives them a good paper when he does begin. <4oy. Wade Hampton. It was only last week that these columns indicated the condition Gov. Hampton as very critical. Ilis condition for the past week has im proved somewhat. By the advice ol his physicians he suffered his leg to be amputated last Wednesday. The latest news is that he stood the oper at ion heroically. The ijoutU Carolina legislature the same day elected the old Govenor to the United States Senate for u term of six years. lie wrote a letter this body stating that he was not candidate; hut the office was one neither to he sought or declined. It is interesting to note the populaiity of Govenor Hampton even with his political enoniiea. The Senators pre sent, twenty-nine in all, voted unani mously for him, including the Re publicans. In the house there were only two voted against him, two ne groes from Beau ford, # t hey voting f<<r Mackey. This election news is truly refresh ing. Such men as Wade Hampton can be of infinite strvice in the Uni ted States Sen at % Why would ho not adorn a presidential ticket in •1880 as the seooiuTdh the 4 fist? Heal Estate Agency. Tin special committee by which the report ia made, which heaaks to have discussed ia an exceptionable one. It is duubtiul if final action will he taken on llie subject at lliia aeaaion. Senator Stanley Mathews on Tues day made an excellent apeeuli in fa vor of the hill in aid of the Texas & Pacific R iilroad, and on yesterday, thinking, no doubt, that the speech had settled the question, moved to t.ik.i up the bill for tinul action. The Senate refused to do thia, because many utlier Senators desired to be lieurd us to the merits of the bill. It seems certain that some hill rec ognizing this road will pass by a large majority. Senator Blaine’s res olution instructing the Judiciary Committee 'of the Senate to inquire whether the rights of voters in the South had Ueu attacked does not upon further reflection, give tliul statesman or other radical gentlemen unalloyed eatisfaetiou. It is parti; mu, and so palpably so that every body knows it. Amendments will lie ottered by Democratic Senators, uiid Mr. Thurman will, if the repub licans invite discussion, speak at length. Ou Tuesday the Uousv passed two ol the appropriation hills—the For tification Bill aud the West Point hill These, tile Senate referred on yester day lo the proper Committees, and they will uu doubt be finally disposid of at an unprecedentedly early day. Other appropriation hills are ready lor the House, aud will receive atten tion at once. The consideration of ' these trill make up the retd busiuess •ion, all ol them trill be [ ou early.
