Among too many excellent articles which our friend, J. S. Anthony, keeps in his stock, may be counted the seed ] from that justly celebrated firm, Briggs A Bro., Chicago, 111., and Rochester, Hew York, the largest seed house in the world. It will surprise many of our readers to learn that over 23,000 mer chants in the United States handle seeds fx-om JBriggs A.Bro.’s whose boxes, 'catalogues, la pels, chromo3, etc., are extremely attractive in high colorings and artistic finish. One of the newest designs from the hands of their artist? is whai is called “Briggs and Brother’s Great Tomato Race on their Grounds,” anl repre sents a race course with perfect representa tions of the different varieties of tomatoes striving for tho honors of lea lership. The de sign is extremely happy and pleasant, besides conveying to the farmer or horticulturalist considerable information upon the merits of the different tomatoes. Being practical"grow erg, Briggs & Brother mty be considered au thority on the subject. We see.that they place a; their leading varieties the Green Gage, Conqueror and Hathaway’s Excelsior, while /hay rate other varieties in the following or der of merit: Trophy, D jfiance, General Grant, Hubbard Curled Leaf, Hspper’s Goliah, Large Early Red, Dwarf Orange Field, Dwarf Early Red, Keyes’s Early Prolific, Sims’ Cluster, and in the rear, with reins thrown to the ground and a telescope at his eye to see where the rest are, shuffles up the Large Yellow. The whole scene is laid in the richest humor and no one can give the lithograph at J. S. Anthony’s an examination without breaking out in a hearty laugh. A *rorna(lA. Last Sunday night a train of colored excursionists passed down the read aloout nine o clock. As the train was not expected a good" many people were taken by surprise. But Blobbs was the worst sufferer. He was about retiring for the night, when he henrd a strange rumbling in the West. He had been ,reading Prof. Tice’s theory of storms, and, he felt a little tfiieasy. At last be stepped to the door and listened. The awful rumbling came nearer. The clouds overhead portended a storm. Blobbs couldn’t stand it. He rushed into the house, and called lustily to Mrs! Blobbs. t ■ “Starjyer stumps, ole woman—the tomader’s a gamin' , , urs. "Train!” sneered Blobbs, “who ever heerd of a train at this time Sunday night ? Why, t mt’s the way all tornaders sound.” Just then the headlight of the locomotive came in sight. For the Register. Contsrs, Oa., Jan. 18, 1875. •Editor Register : Last Wednesday evening was perhaps as cola as any one during the very cold week; but it did not detor a gooily number of our young people from attending a party pi von by Col. L. E. Brown and his good lady at their residence two miles from town. ' Had It been their first party there would not have been no such attendance as graced their elegant home on this occasion. But most of our young folks have attended at his residence before on such occasions, and o.d Boreas hiccself could not keep them away. t , Col. Brown and his lady .aro no " mincers, ’’ or " half-way” people, which was fully attest ed by the prepa rati ms made for their guests on last Wednesday evening. We say nothing derogatory to any of our housekeepers— and we arc blesasd with many excellent ones in this amotion —when we say that Col. Brown’s accomplished lady ought, by right of merit, be at the head o’f the list. We have been around some, and in our rounds, we have actendod a number of parties (so call ed). It is a hard matter to keep us away. Any kind of an invitation, however indirect, will bring us. Age creeps on, and little re sponsibilities are growing up oround usf but if our love for those festive gatherings grow less, wo cannot detect it. We can’t call to memory any party wo ever attended that we did not enjoy; and in taking a retrospect, it weuld be a hard matter Act say which one of the many we have attended was enjoyed most. A much more exacting and fastidious person than your'correspondent would have found no fault with any feature of tho party at Col. Brown’s. The suppor couldn’t have bee- sur passed. We took our seat at the table on the fourth round, and we would never have suspected that three rounds of hungry supper less—home of them we doubt dinnerless peo ple, who had divested themselves for tho oc casion, hid proceeded us. There wore no scraps, and the tables were loaded with an endless variety of good things, a" complete in all their proportions as when they coma from the hands of the cook, and the attention of tho tables by our Host and his servants was unremitting ; yO# couldn’t want anything or everything fast enouga to bo without it a min ute. Such attention at a hotel would soon make it famous. A number of the belles and beaux of Con yers were present, and tb :y behaved them selves so woll we would like to make- honor able mention by name p.f oaoh and every one of them, but as space would forbid, we can say that the ladies were dressed becomingly. We ate not enough of a fashion man to 1 say what thb tti?tic’>.3 of cdlors afro that constitute becoming dress for the various shades of beauty; but ' they all lookjl pretty, and “ sweat enough to kill,” would not be two strong an expression. Our young men are fumed for their gallantry, an l ou the occasion made for themselves now laurels. • We had some royal dancing ; and your cor respondent hid the exquisite pleasure of hay ing a lady for his partner in every sot that was anneed, after our arrival, which was not late —but our departure was. Such good fortune as that don’t fjftea fall to the lot of one of oar years and responsibilities. Miss Emma L-™—-d, Mis Lizzie ,J Miss Mamie W and, and Mis3 Willie S—— —t are the names, in part, of a few of. the young ladies who honored us at various times by be coming our partner in the dance; and to them, with hat off, and as polite a bow as one of our infirmities can make, we pay our re spects. Miss Emma L and, who is on a visit to our town, and the guest of one of our citizens is a mo st jfiaeeful dancer, and it is the wish of a good many of us that she may grace with her presence, while among us, many more such occasions, and the special wish-of your correspondent that he may find her on ruth occasions disengaged for at least one set. Someone has said that the happiest people in tho world are those who administer most to other people's pleasure. Tuat being true, we vote Col. Brown and his lady the happiest cou ple we can now thifak of. We can’t close this letter without saying something about our genial and urbane T. C. and our original and fun-loving T. R. who fu - nished us with all the really good music we had during the evening, and in several in stances, to pleasure others, they quit what was to them most delightful, tete-a-tete, and engaged ni that which didn’t give them any pleasure at all. Such sacrifices as that our young people ought to bear in mind, and the time is coming when we can reward them, and we must da it, even if we have to lay other business aside and ga to the Courthouse. Only in one instance was T. R. a little obstinate. We saw.hi3 situation and couldn’t blame him. He begged that he would take hia name down as a subscriber to the extent of fifty cents for the services of a musician who had already given us proof that making music was but lit tle in his lino- We offered to double the amount if that would keep other than tho music that could, be n.ade by our T. C. and R. at bay. Wo disliked to insist, but we fiad been .com missioned by the dancers, and we felt the duty to be an imperative one, and com * ho n; ust, and come he did, and they played “ Tho girl I left behind me,”, and we danced our boots off. - Here, to Col Brown and his accomplished Lady. May the many sunny hours they have made for others chase the shadows from their pathway. L. 4 Married. On the 16th inst., by liev. J. If. Brit* tian, Mr, J. S'. Swift, of Lithonia, ono of he most genial and urbane gentlemen cf old DoKalh, and the general agent [for three of the best fertizers that have been inroduced in to our State, was in *he city on Monday last,' in theinterostof the John C. Ragsdale,Brigh ton, and Swift’s Compound, the three fertili sers mentioned above. They have been tested in our midst for the past three years, and their rare mei it and peculiar adoptability to our soil have yiado tl\pm, by those who have tested them, 1 the much prefered fertiliser of the period. More could be said in favor iof either one of those throe fertilisers that could not be crowded into a newspaper article wo believe it‘will bo to tho interest of every farmer who plants a seed of cotton to use our, or all of those fertilizers.. They have boon thoroughly testedqn this community, sixle-by side, with what have been, and now considered, t he highest standard fertilizers ; and in every instance, tho test has been disparaging to oth er fertilizers. Col. Swift, while in our city, appointed Messrs. Stewart & Met’alia local agents, and our planters would do well to call on them and become fully informed of tho true merits of those Guanos befoie making arrangements of any kind. \TOTIUE IN BANKRUPTCY.
