Editors Enterprise : There appeared in the Rockdale Reg ister, ot the 27 ull., a card addressed to the Editor of said paper, signed, J. P. Tilly, In which allusion is made to my self and Olliers. Now, I have this to say to the public: I can not condescend to notice the contents of a card to the public from one who in a private com munieaton io me expresses himself in these words: *‘l knuw I am cowardly.” I therefore dismiss, with the contempt that they merit, both author and card. Respectfully T. D. Guinn. Conyers, Ga,, Feb. 9th 1876. Editors Register : You will confer a favor by publishing the above card from T. D. Guinn, in an swer to my card of the 271 h ult., in which he avoids my communication en tirely. If he wishes to shirk it in this way, I will let him go without “brand ing him,” for he lias saved me the trou ble. Respectfully, J. P, Tilly. An Australian Mermaid, and Egyptian mummy, from the C itaeombs of Egyut, said to be Pharaoh’s daughter. (We don't doubt it. There being such a striking resemblance.) V Punch and Judy show. Assisted by a ne ;re Bango picker, with such other contribu tion as was made by the audience in the way of giving three dollars for a small tin box of soap, or a dollar for a short stick of candy. It was played some bow this way. Three small boxes, in one they said there was a five, a two and one dollar bill. T'no showman would say : “As they lie, Gentlemen, I would not take four seventy-five for the first; One seventy-five for the second. Nor seventy-five for the third, But with a little manipulation he would sell you a box of his soap and give you choice of the boxes for three dollars. “That’s the way the money went pop goes the weasels.” They all knew which box the five was in, Still all the boys that tried the old thing knew that some how or other it was in the other box. Owing to the flood of legal advertisements this was crowded out of our last issue. Our Representative. We see that Hon. J. A. Stewart lias introduced the following hills, in the House, in the last few days : A bill to regulate the sale of liquor in the counties of Floyd, Dale, and other counties therein named, and in the town of Palmetto, in Campbell Cos. ; Prohibiting hunting with dogs or five arms, or fishing with seme and hooks on the enclosed lands of another in Rockdale county. Dr. Stewart also offered the following reso lution which was referred to the Committee on Finance : Whereas, in the opinion of this General Assembly, it is expedient, under existing cir cumstances, 10 sell the Macon and Brunswick Road, now the property of the State ; Resolved, That so much of the joint resolu tion of the General Assembly, approved March C, 1875, as declares “that it is the sense of this General Assembly that the Macon and Brunswick Railroad, with its franchises, be sold by the Governor at an early date, and if found to be practicable, as early as the first day of June, 1875, at public or private sale ; and upon such terms and for such price in I meney, or first mortgage endorsed bonds of I the Macon and Brunswick Railroad, or bends of the State, as in his judgement may be con sistent with the interest of the State,” be and is hereby rescinded. Convicts]at Stone Mountain. We learn from the Atlanta Herald that considerable excitement exists at Stone Mountain over the discharge of a part of the force employed by the Granite Company, and the substitution of chain-gang convicts under Col. Alexander. The latter gentleman and the company deny that such a state of things exists, but the Herald of the 4th says : A gentleman from.this city visited Stone Mountain yesterday, and found the excitement still very high, and the people very indignant on account of the action of the Stone Moun tain Granite Company, in discharging a part of their force, and reducing the wages of the remainder, for the purpose of introducing convict labor in their places. They state that while over forty men were discharged, over forty others, such as book keepers, teamsters, black-smitbs, and others places could not he filled by convicts, and who were indispensable to the work, were retained, but forced to suffer a reduction of twenty-five per cent, in their wages. Men who were driv ing teams at one dollar per day, now get sev enty-five cents, and all othera who are retain ed have had their reduction made. There were ten or twelve of the discharged men at the train on its arrival, and in speak incr 0 £ t k e matter, expressed themselves deter mined to resist the i production of the convict labor in the quarries, at any cost. The mer chants who run their business on the patron age of these stone cutters, and all the attach ed of the works, as well as cverv citizen in the place, were exercised more or less, and they are a unit in condemning it. They plainly intimate that no convict can work in the quarries. They say, "We wiU protect ourselves peaceably, if we can, but forcibly if . must.” CoinpUineiitai-y Resolutions to •Judge Davidson.
