Demur J, had the misfortune to lose his pocket book, on his way to town, one day last week. The book contain •<! over %230 in money, and when Mr. Dennard discovered his loss he very naturally felt a little depressed in spirits. It suddenly occurred to him that the times were "hard,” and as he ran his hand into his-breeches pock et the idea struck him more forcibly than ever before that money was tight. But these speculations were happily ended by the ap pearance of Col. V. N. Baker, with the his sing article, safe and undisturbed. The Co lonel had picked it up in the road, and had lost no time io seeing the owner. Mr. Ue'n nard was fortunate in having his treasure fall Into the Hafidl of each a finder; The First Coal Burner. We learn that a number of parties in this vicinity had tjieir attention attracted, early yesterday morning, to the unusual noise made by tho up- passenger train. Upon inqui ry it was ascertained that the train was drawn by the engine ‘'Clinton,” tho first coal-burner that has ever passed ovor tho road. The othor wood-burning engines will probably bo altered as soon as possible, as it is aaid that the new arrangement saves one hour’s time between Atlanta and Augnßta. That young gentleman oracularly remarked "Now you see what a man gets by trying to do something. It’s a dangerous business, gentle men, and that’*, the reason I never do any thing. If a man will just keep his hands in his pockets he’ll never get hurt,” ' Wanted to Stay All ISffglif, Some of our boys from Jaoksou eoun. ty, (out of money, as a matter of course,) who were hiding out from tl.o V, 8. A little colored child waa achiAintally burn ed to diyith, on Mr. P. E. Banks premises, last Thursday. Those of our readers who remember the struggle made last fi|ay to effect a change ill the management of the Georgia railroad will not be surprised to learn that already preparations are beiug made for the coining contest this spring. We learn that parties are now at work securing proxies, authorizing them to vote stock at the election in the inter est of the present management. We presume that the opposition is equally vigilant and ac tive, and that all the proxies to pb tamed will be secured by one side or the other long before the assembling of the stockholders’ convention. It is said th*t the lines will be drawn this year in nearly thi same way as they were last; that Judge King, the present president, will be pressed for re-election, and that Judge William M. Iteqse, of Washington, or Col. 0. H. Pliinizy, of Ahgusta, will be the candidate of the opposition. The race last year wps the closet ever known in the history of the company—Judge King wpning by less than one hundred votes—and a lively time may be reasonably expected next May. The opposition goes into the fight upon the old grounds of complaint; the administration fortified by the two dividends which have been declared since the last convention adjourned. —Chronicle and Sentinel. pKOPOSALS FOB A NEW BRIDGE, There will be let out to the lowest bidder the building of a Bridge across Honey Creek, at the crossing, on the South River ro;id, between Henry Maddox and T D Swann, on Tuesday, the Fourth day of April, next.
