TRUE PATHOS.
fMttfrAl Washington, in his parting
interview with his generals, undertook
to read a farewell paper which he had
wr't eu for the occasion. J’u fintlng it
difficult to read, he said, with simple pa
thos, "Pardon me, gentl-men, I have not
only grown gray, but blind in vour ser
vice.” Professor Wilson, ol Edinburg,
made a speech to his students, even more
touching than this : When Wilson first
met Ins class in the University, after his
wife's death, Tie had to adjudicate on tiie
csWpfcrntiVe merits of various essays
which had been sent in on competition
for a prize. lie bowed to his class, and
in as firm a voice as lie could command,
opologi/.ed for not having examined the

to read them in the darkness of the val

spoke, the tears rolled down his cheeks,
lie said no more, hut waved his hand to
his class, who stood up as he concluded,
and hurried out of the lecture room.
A NORTH CAROLINA ANNIVERSARY.
The battle of Moore Creek, N. C was
fought on the 27th of February, 177(1,
and its centennial was celebrated Monday
with enthusiasm by the people of Pender
county, in that State. The supporters
of King George in that conflict were for
the most part Scotchmen, who bad been
adherents of the ‘bonnie 1 Pretender and
had emigrated to A re.el Tea after the de
feat at Cwltdden. They became staunch
snpiirtrts of the house of Hanover, and
after the hostilities in New England the
loya*l Governor of North Carolina, seeing
that the King's strength in that division
of the colonics lay with these people,
issued a pr. clatnation coYlce'ining ‘a most
daring, horrid and unnatural Veoellion
agninst the King's govcrni'ilent,* and
eaHmg fiat' the support of all loyal men.
The Americans were commanded at the
battle of Moore's Creek by Gen. James
Moore. They numbered about 1,000 ;
and them Were about 1,600 Tories.
About fitly of the Tories were killed or
Wounded, and many more were taken
prisoners. The colonial troops lost one
man, and two of their men were wound
ed, After the battle the Iliglilandeis
throughout the neighborhood were
speiddy disarmed and their leaders were
imprisoned.
A BEAUTIFUL aiRL FOUND HANGING.
Just as wc are gome; to press, says
the Conastota Herald, we are startled
with the lull details of a sad event,
which will n i doubt’ cast a shade of
gloom over this community. For 1 lie
present, out of respect, for the suffering
parent of tire lady, we retrain from pub
lishing the names of the dramatis per
some in the scene described below.
For the last twenty years there has liv
ed in ihis town an eminently respectable
tainilt, the pride of whose household
was a charming daughter of 17. JSlie
was as beautiful as the idvM ol Ui'e poet,
and as remarkable for Iter intelligence as
tor her etiroassing loveliness. ll*r eyes
were like stars in a summer night, and
her lorm, warmed by the blood ot
youthful, vigorous, womanhood, was as
graceful as that of a Grecian goddess.
Her hair hung in graceful ringlets ov ;r
her pearly shoulders like molten gold,
and her cherry cheeks, as soft as velvet,
looked like roses mingled with snow.
A natural result one would expect that
a creature possessed of such charms of
mind and form and feature would awa
ken the grand passion in some man's
bosom ; and such was the ease. For
several months past a fascinating young
gentleman has been paying Iter the most
devoted attention. ,le, too, was hand
rdniM and intelligent. Her female friends
would occasionally tease her about him*
unit a Hood ot coucious blushes would
uradiato Iter hsautitnl face at the very
mention of his name. Everything
sci med to pass along smoothly for a
while, when all of a sudden she lost her
spirits snd wore a look of melnneholy.
Her musical laughter, like tinkling of
erytal dewdrops upon the silver leaves*
was hushed, and she seemed like a Itly
that had hern made to wither and lade
by the burning rays ot a summer sun.
Her became anxious about her
condition and watched over her with
tender solicitude; although frequently
questioned as to the cause of depression
and sadness, she made no reply, except
in an equivocal kind of style tint render*
ed confusion worse confounded, Yes
terday evening about 8 o'clock she was
missed from her home, and the worst
fears of her parents were excited.
They sought higli and low, but she was
nowhere to he found. Finally hei
mother remetttbeml that of late she
had been Ih live habit of silting, sad,
weeping, and distracted, iu a vme cov
ered arbor which leads to the garden,
lie rushed to the aibor, and as that dis
tracted father guxed upon the scene that
met his views, rendered more dismal by
the low, glimmering ray# Irom the pale
orb ot night, his blood curdled in his
veins, his cheeks turned pale and the
heaving ot his bosom plainly told that
it was tilled with deepest emotion.
There belore him was his beautiful

Eighteen hnndrtxl an bovo v-*.x is the
Centennial year. It is also the ye%r in wh h
an Opposition House of Representatives, e

of these events are sure to Vie of great interest
and importance, especially the two latter ; and
all of them and everything connected with
them w ill he fully ar.d freshly reported and
expounded in Thi Sun.
The Opposition House of Representatives,
talcing up the lino of inquiry opened years ago
by The Sun, will sternly and diligently inves

administration ; and it will, it is to be hoped,
lay tiie foundation for anew and bett* r period
in nr national history. Of all this The Sun
will contain complete and accurate accounts,
furnishing its readers with early and trustwor
thy information upon these absorbing topics.
The twenty-third Presidential elect on, with
the preparations for it, will be memorable as
deciding upon Grant’s aspirations .tor a third
term of power and plunder, and still more as
deciding who shall be the candidate of the
party of Reform, and fts electing that candi
date. Concerning all these subjects, those
who read The Sun will have the constant
Wifcans of being thoroughly well ir formed.
The Weekly Sun, which has attained a
circulation of over eighty thousand copies, al
ready has its readers in every State and Ter
ritory, and we trust that the year 1876 will
see their numbers doubled. It will continue
to he a thorough newspaper. All the general
news of the day will be found in it, condensed
when unimportant, at full length when of mo
ment ; and always, we trust, treated in a clear,
interesting and instructive manner.
It is our aim to make the Weekly Sun the
bust family Newspaper in the world, and we
Ali All continue to give in its columns a large
amount of miscellaneous reading, such as sto
ries, ides, pa ms. scientific intelligence and
ftgri uliural information, for whifh wo are not
able to make room in our daily edition. The
agricultural department especially is one of its
prominent features. The fashions are also reg
ularly reported in its columns; and so are the
markets o f evtry kind.
