fell in Hath county, Ky., on the 3rd inst.

fell. The hogs and chickens devoured

Mr. Justice B'ory, in commenting on
this provision, wtil remarks : “ If, then,
there must he a judgment ol

the Constitution contemplated, that the

From the above we see, there being
no authority of law for iinpeaolimeftt in
Ifulknap's case, the policy, as a matter
of course, is bad. ’Twould be con
sti ned as a party measure ; a personal
vindicative strike at the Radical
party, instead of a movement
aided by ail honest men, to remove
corrupt officials ; to see the laws vindi
•sated, and to force tho.-e in power to
run the government on the plan pre
scribed by the Constitution, and laws
made in pursuance thereto.

of a strung, high toned paper.
The editor of the Geneva Lamp wants
to marry, and consequently has reduced
the price of his paper to ono,dollar a year.
Hope he’ll get enough to buy a paper
collar xud a pair of spurs.
On Inst Thursday Gov. Smith appoint
ed Mr. 11. G. Wrights of the Augusta
Chronicle, State Printer, in place of H.
A. Alston, resigned.

are offering to “take pay in cotton at
fifteen cents a pound." The planters

making largely increased prearations for
seeding the next crop, and they also go
to show that the anticipations expressed

they were at the time,) groundless, with
a season equal to that which produced
the cotton crop of 1870-1. The southern

The nomination of Richard 11. Dana,
to succeed Schenek as Minister to the
Court of St James, was a surprise to
many persons, because it was tuiderstocd
that no nomination would be sent to the
Senate until after Scbeiick’s arrival hi
this country. Dana’s appointment is,
however, regarded as an exoellent one.
Accounts of a tornado which passed
over a part of Nortl eastern Missouri,
Friday, say the little town of Sterin
key, in Monroe county, was entirely de
molished. At Ivensaler stat ion, on Mis
souri and Texas Railroad, two children
were carried away by the storm, and not
yet found- The destruction of houses,
barns, outbuildings, Ac., was very great.
The tornado was about two hundred
yards wide.
A ruble dispatch from London reports
that Lord Aylesford’s wife has eloped
with the Marquis of Blandford, eldest
sou of the Duke of Warborongh. Lord
Aylbslord was called home from India on
urgeut affairs some time ago.
All liquor" entering the grounds of
the Centennial exhibition are to be tax
ed ten cents a gallon, and the committee
expect to realise $50,000 therefrom.
This calls for 500,000 gallons. Hy mul
tiplying (he latter sum with the number
of drinks that go to a gallon in Phila
delphia, we have the number of male
visitors expected lo be present fit tile
Centennial.
The ekbiting scenes that followed the
Be’knap exposure led to great excite
ment and disorder in the house of rep
resentatives, and the New York Bulletin
thinks there would have been blows on
Tuesday ami Wednedddy but for “the
counsels of such men as Hoar, lvasson,
Hill, of Georgia, and Lamar,” through
whose efforts all troubles ot that nature
were averted.
Some day must necessarily elapse be
fore tlie Committee on the Judiciary will
be prepared to report articles of im
peachment against Belknap. No mate
rial testimony, if any at all, having been
taken since that of Marsh, under the
present circumstances, is 6f no avail in
support ot the charge which the House
has already informed the Senate it will
make good. It is said that more than a
week ago six or seven persons in the
vicinity of Marsh and Evail's late trading
post were summoned, and that their ar
rival may soon be expected.
