In a coininunicati.nl to (ho Bee World, for January, I>. Staples, of Co lumbia, Teno., given tbe following iu atvuotiona upon tliia poult, in connection with stimulating queens to greater activ ity, and the bees to tile building of new combs. He says it is known by all good apiarians that wlwn honey is coin ing into the hive regularly the queen is stimulated to lay a vast amount more! eggs than when there is no heney coin ing tu, although there may be an abnn dance of sealed honey in the hive. lienee tbc philosophy of feeding n little honey every day ill early spring; also, it your l>e<s are destitute of a sufficiency of bee-bread, yon can Iced a little rye flour or corn meal, put in the sunshine and out of the way o( the wind, with a good effect, in order to have a strong slock of workers on hand on the early appearance ol the harvest, that diey may wade in and lake ol tho first fruit of the land ; and should the harvest linger you need not fear the laborers will lire, for when there is work to do Ihe little busy bee is ul ways ready. If you wish your bees to use your feed for the [iur|ioe of raising bees or the building of new combs, you will need to dilute your honey or syrup with water, but not so much that it will not be sufficiently sweet for the bees to par take of it freely ; and in order flint they may not slore it in the combs it will be necessary to acidify it a little by using acetic acid, cider vinegar, or lemon juice, for the bees very well know that if they stole such ill their combs it will be an injury, therefore they will not do it; but being avaricious Jitilo fellows they will eat of it and feed it to their young until all become fat with a secretion of wax, when, if you place an cm ply frame in the centre ol the brood -nest, you will l>e surprised with what rapidity it will be filled with new combs. GEORGIA FARMING. The Cartersville (Ga.) | Expre** gives the following as u sample of what can be done on a faunal the South, and that too with white labor alone. One of the items, it will he seen, of the Cultivation, is 75 acres of clover. Yet the idea has been prevalent that clover cannot be grown at the South successfully: Mr. S. Gregory, of Muiry county, is one ol our most successful farmers. He owus three hundred acres of land* He has recently shipped a large quantity of seed to Tenne-see, for which lie receiv ed $2,000, the hay crop being worth $2 ,0t)0 more. He also makes corn enough for home consumption, and to fatten pork, the surplus of which brings him from SOOO to SBOO per annum. He makes alto.from 1,500 to 2,500 bushels of wheat for sale. lie plants no cotion but makes all his own supplies, having to buy nothing except groceries. All of this work Mr. Gregory accoimilislies with average of help through the year t>( eight hands, all white. Hesides mak ing and harvesting his crops a great deal of improvement is made upon the farm such as solid stone undcr-drain ipg- . - , Mr. G. has nine sons (all fanners) and one daughter. ]le is a widower and is a good catch for any widow willing to shed her weeds. WILL POULTRY PA Y FARMERSI We are often asked, sp.ys the At/ri cultitri.it, if poultry will pay Western fanners, and itli slight variations, the same may be said as to our State ; and from the numerous, practical and profita ble results that we can call to mind, we are sstisfied that there is more money ir poultry to every farmer than the invest ment of the same amount of money in any other kind of farm stock. If they will get some of the improv ed br< eds and raise chickens and eggs to sell, and not try to raise fancy chick ens without the experience of a regular breeder, and expect to sell them at tan cy prices, they will succeed. With the present tacilities for market ting poultry and eggs, there can he no overstocks g the market. It pays bet ter to ship ilio poultry than the grain. It always pays best to market the grain by feeding it, and one hundred pounds of poultry can be raised as cheaply on the farm as one hundred pounds of pork or beef; yet the poultry always sells for the most money. Any of the improved breeds of poultry, properly cared for with warm, comfortable quarters, and plenty of good feed and water, will pay handsomely with the liberal supply of eggs lit rough the winter when eggs aro high. Get a trio of tho bhst bloods you tan find, and you can soon get a fine lot of such bloods, and by judicious crossing with a few of the best common hens, you will get a superior lot of half-breed chicks that will mature early and attain a largo size, and that will bring a good price in market. Have none but full blood roosters on the farm, and you will find there is money In poultry, by thus abandoning the old worthless barnyard fowls, and keeping a better meed that will not eat any more, mature quicker, and will not waste halt so much as the scrub chickens. Ouly make tho start now . You can get a trio of full bloods tor from 1 5 to $lO this spring, that will pay it back in eggs in one year, besides having the chiokcus as a capital slock. —liural tSun, INSECTS. An infusion of tomato leaves lias been found excellent to clear plants of bugs— the phylloxera always exempted. The annual report of the official commission on the experiments conducted under its direction during 1875, In the affected districts, on the various plans for de stroying (lie vine bug, concludes, that no remedy has yet been tound ; that the best powder is too costly in application, and hut partial in efficacy ; that the old bark ought to be removed trom the stems j the eggs destroyed in winter, and a recourse had to America stocks. nui rAFKB IS OX FIUK TV ITU QLlVfiy rWI. rfV h) 'A T. TJhLE WEEKLY s uisr. 1770 NjDY YORK 1876 Eighteen hundred an seventy-six is the Centennial year. It is also the year in wh h an Opposition House of Bepresentatives, e first since the war, w i be in power at Wa - ington ; and the year of the twenty-third e tion of a President of the United States. AH of these events are sure to be of great interest and importance, especially the two latter; and all of them and everything connected with them w ill lie fnlly and freshly reported and expounded in Thu Sun. The Opposition House of Bepresontatives, taking up the lino of inquiry opened years ago by The Sun, will sternly and diligently inves tigate the corruptions anil misdeeds of Grant’s administration ; and it will, it is to be hoped, ley the foundation for anew and liett< r period in rnr national history. Of all this The Sun will contain complete and accurate accounts, furnishing its readers with early and trustwor thy information upon these absorting topics. The twenty-third Presidential election, with the preparations for it, will be memorable as deciding upon Grant’s aspirations for a third term of power and plunder, and still more as ctuciding who shall be tho candidate of the party of Reform, and oh electing that candi date. Concerning nil these subjects, those who road Thk Sun will have the constant menus of being thoroughly well ii formed. The Weerlv Sun, which hies attained n circulation of over eighty thousand copies), al ready bns its readers in every State and Ter ritory, and we trust that the year 187(i will see their numbers doubled. It will continue to he a thorough newspaper. All the general news of the day will be found in it, condensed when unimportant, at full length when of mo ment ; and always, wo trust, treated in a clear, interesting and instructive manner. It is our aim to make the Weekly Sun the best family newspaper in the world, and wo shall continue to give in its columns a large amonntjof miscellaneous reading, snob as sto ries, tale*, poems, scientific intelligence and agricultural information, for which we are not able to make room in our daily edition. The agricultural department especially is one of its prominent features. The fashions are also reg ularly reported in its columns ; and so are the markets of evtry kind. The Wssilt Sun, eight pages, with fifty six broad columns, is only $1 20 a year, pos tage prepaid. As this price barely repays tho cost of the paper, no discount can be made from thi* rate to clubs, agents postmasters, or anyone. The Paiut Sun, a large four page newspa per of twenty-eight columns, gives all the now* for two cents a copy. Subscription, pos tage prepaid, 550 a month or s*>.so a year.
