Kocfettale County Court*
The County Court convened at 9
o’clock, a. m., May Bth, and adjourned at
6. p. m., May 9th. Present—George W\
Glealon, Judge presiding, and T. J.
Christ’an, County Solicitor, all the otl tr
members of the local bar, and Judge J.
J. Floyd and E. F. Edwards, Esq , of
Covington. Th, civil,docket was taken
up and twenty-three cases disposed of
in their order. The criminal docket was
next taken up, and thirteen cases dis
posed of. Two by pleas of guilty .and
fined. Two were allowed to be settled
by defendants paying costs. The Coun
ty Solicitor advising to that course be
cause he did uot have sufficient evidence
to make out cases against the parties.
Nine cases were disposed ot by some
b.ejng found guilty aud fined, and others
being acquitted. ,■ ,
i lure are fifty-two cases on the crirn
inal dockets. Forty-nine of these were
transferred from the Superior Court—
being all the indictments which have
been found by the Grand Jury since Oc
tober term, 1874, tor misdemeanors. All
of these cases have been disposed ot but
fifteen, and wi.hout costjng, the county
oij.e.dollar, and with but. little loss ot
any of her citizens from their
business. It would have taken the Su

of these cases, and perhaps two j with a

'1 he act creating jthg County Court
provides that the cases shall be tiied
without a jury, except when demanded
by the accused. When so demanded,
the Sheriff shall summons twelve rpen
to serve as a jury in that case. We
have noticed that in the cases which
have been tried by jury, that a few men
haVe done most of tlie Jury duty so far.
Hereafter, tbeffe will be a jury. box : with
the names of all persons who are subject
to jury duty in the county ; and when
there is a jury demanded by any defend,
ant, their names will ibe drawn from that
box, and then summonsed by the Sheriff!
This will be done to throw the burden
lon all .alike.
The regular term of the County Court
is the second and fourth Monday* in
each month.

Moody.
D. L. Moody is a thickset, short neck
ed, flat footed Yankee, of the Massachu
setts type, and looks more like a man
out of the blacksmith shop, washed up
and thrown on some clean clothes, than
a professional preacher, Jle is .a
a tbetttber of Congregational ohuiob.
In preaching he uses the comnipricft
language, often throwing out low phrases
without any regird to velvet ears. His
voice is uncultivated, rou?h, and sharp
in tune. His matter is an omnium
gatherum without coherency. He is
innocent of grammar, rhetoric, or, I had
almost said, learning of any kind. He
received the merest smattering at sonic
of the common schools of Mass. He
fortunately, under the circulnstances, lies
not enough of the article to make it a
“dangerous thing” ; he, therefore makes
no pretensions to learning. Sti’d, after
all those Abatements, ho is A man of
power. These are its elements : He
.looks so blind in the pulpit that be
seems to say to every one before and
around him, “ How are you this morn
ing, my friend ; I havg good news for
you—now attention.” The joy of his
own heart beams from his countenance,
and begets a feeling of complacency in
the hear.ts of his auditory. Than there
is nothing stilted about him. He speaks
in conversational tone and in the lan
guage of the fireside. He abounds in
apt illustrations, in anecdotes grave and
gay; now drawing tho tear, now the
smile. His prayers are short, and his
sermonsji’arely exceed half an hour. He
is keen, firllsque, lively, wnlks backward
and forward, and from right to dra
matising his subjects, throwing his
thoughts out before the senses, and thus
keeping everything wide awake around
him. His voice, though not sonorous,
is strong, while his intense earnestness,
worked up fo biood heat, presses its way
into every heart. Advled to these tell
ing qualities he is posserfied ot rare ad
ministrative abilities. He marshales his
aidaiVvhh wonderful tact, and displays
his acumen in assigning to each his prop
er sphere. He spends a whole halt hour
in singing tender or rousing spngs to
open (he way for the truths of hie ser
mon. In looks, word and gesture he is
one of tho people—one, too, seeking
their best present and eternal interests.
Small wonder that the crowd hangs on
his lips. He is teaching them elemen
tary truths in a pleasant way which they
can understand without the truth of
thinking. He sustains about the same
to the educated ministry of this
country that the common schools do to
our universities. o', , ;•
Mr. Moody is doing a good .work, in
his way, and we wish him God speed.
A Hearer.
