Another good feature in a County Fab’ is that it brings all the farmers and th|pr families together in consultation, and engenders a; social, friendly feeling among them, which is calculated to do good ; and, then the ladies can all feel free and easy to exhibit their handy work, and their skill in cooking, etc. I*——— ttocifcttale County Court- The County Court convened at 9 o'clock, a. m., May Bth, and adjourned at 6. p. ji., May 9th. Present—George W. Glealon, Judge presiding, and T. J. Christian, County Solicitor, all the ot! tr members of the local bar, and Judge J. J. Floyd and E. F. Edwards, Esq , of Covington. The civil, docket was taken up and twenty-three eases disposed of in their order. The cfiminal docket was next, taken up, and thirteen cases dis posed of. IV<> by pleas of guilty .and fined. Two were allowed to bs settled by defendants paying costs. Hie Coun ty Solicitor advisiug to that course be cause ho did not have sufficient evidence to make out cases against the parties. Nine cases were disposed of by some bejng found guilty and fined, and others being acquitted. , , 'ihtre are fifty-two cases on the brim inal dockets. Forty-nine of these were transferred from the Superior Court— being all the indictments which have been found by the Grand Jury since Oc tober term, 1874, tor misdemeanors. All of these cases have been disposed of but fifteen, and without costing, the county one.dollar, and with but, little loss of time,by any of her from their business. It would have taken the Su perior Court at least one week to dif-pose of these cases, and perhaps two; with a cost of at ofce hundred dollars per day to the tjpunty. • 'I he act creating jthg County Court provides that the cases shall be tiied without a jury, except when demanded by the accused. When so demanded, the Sheriff shall summons twelve tpen to serve as a jury in that case. We have noticed that in the cases which have been tried by jury, that a few men haVe done most of tlib Jury duty so far. Hereafter, thefe w ill be a jury, box ; with the names of all persons who are subject to jury .duty in the county ; and when there is a jury demanded by any defend ant, their names will be drawn front that box, and then summonsed by the Sheriff, This will be done to throw the burden jon all.alike. The regular term of the County Court is the second and fourth Mondays in each month. Died. Mi’s. Mary N- Beavers died at her ihome in Henry county pp the 28th of April last, of dropsy. Her sufferings in ’’heHast illnesß were intense ; hut beiqg strongTn the faith of tlje atonement of the b ood of Jesus, she bore it with great resignation and Christian fortitude, •She had been for some years past a con sistent member ot the M. Moody is a thickset, short neck ed, flat footed Yankee, of the Massachu setts type, and looks more like a man out of tho blacksmith shop, washed up anif thrown on some clean clothes, (han a professional preacher- ,110 is .a liyqnap, a ibettiher of the Congregational oliuicty. In preaching he uses the commoAeijt language, often throwing opt low phrases without any reg rd to velvet ears. Ills voice is uncultivated, rou'h, and sharp in tune. His matter is an omnium gatherum without coherency. lie is innocent of grammar, rhetoric, or, I had almost said, learniug of any kind. He received the merest smattering at some of the common schools of Mass. He fortunately, under the circubistances, has not enough of the article to make it a “.dangerous thing”; he, therefore makes no pretensions to learning. Still, after all these abatements, he is a man of power. These are its elements : He looks so bland in the pulpit that be seems to say to every one before and around him, “ How avo you this morn ing, my friend ; I havp good news for you—now attention.” The joy of his own heart beams from his countenance, and begets a feeling of complaceucy in the hear.ts of his auditory. Tltsp there is nothing stilted about him. He speaks in conversational lone and in the lan guage of the fireside. He abounds in apt illustrations, in anecdotes grave and gay; now drawing tho tear, now the smile. His prayers are short, and his sermons .rarely exceed half an hour. He is keen, b’rtisque, lively, walks backward and forward, and from right to lqij, dra matising his subjects, throwing his thoughts out before the senses, and thus keeping everything wide awake around him. Ilis voice, fjiough not sonorous, is strong, while his intense earnestness, worked up to blood heat, presses its way into every heart. Added to these tell ing qualities he is possessed ot rare ad ministrative abilities. lie marshales his aids,,'vjth wonderful tact, and displays his acumen in assigning to each his prop er sphere. He spends a whole half hour in singiug tender or rousing spngs to open the way for the truths of hie ser mon. In looks, word and gesture he is one of the people—.one, too, seeking their best present and eternal interests. Small wonder that the crowd hangs on his lips. He is teaching them elemen- tary truths in a pleasant way which they caii understand without the truth of thinking. He sustains about the same relation to the educated ministry of this country that the common schools do to our universities. ( ,<! ,* r Mr. Moody is doing a good work, in his way, and we wish him God speed. A Hearer.
