A little child of Mr. Buck Rutledge, was accidently left by its mother at Rut ledge Tuesday morning, w‘ en the ex cursion train left tha® place for Atlanta. Conductor Harris of the way freight train, took charge of the little fellow (whe is about' fonr years old) and was carrying bim to hIS rriotbef. While the train was stopning in Conyers, Bill Gregory of the Relay fjeruse, kindly took charge ot the little waif, and bribed him to hash crying tor mama with a stick of candy. Gregory ’has a big heart, and the litt’e one nestled close to p. We tfar.t hn; gihe how that mothers heart yearned with suspense, and how it leaped for joy as She again folded the little one to her bosom. “The depths of a mothers love who can fathom it 1 And to the little one, none like mother can soothe away pain” [communicated.] Mr, Editor: As you take a g eat interest in the af fairs of the young folks, I'll tell you a tew wor Is concerning a picnic which they had at Rockdale Paper Mills, the Ist day of this month. It was decided on sveral days before hand, and by the time appointed to start, Jail necoesaavy arrangements bad been made. At about nine o’clock we started, and after a gay ride of two miles arrived at our des filiation. But not to throw ourselves dbwn-on natures soft carpet of velvet, and feast our eyes on her lavishing beau ty, and glide over tin* waters in the lit tle boats, and whisper sof. words of love in the ears ot the little maidens by our side, as was our expectation; for soaroely had we alighted from our vehicles, when the clouds, which all the morning had been looking so threating began to hov br over our heads and pour down their contents. Then the bright smiles 4 which had hitherto illuminated the faces of the young ladies ohangedpnto sour frowns, and was enough to make t/iose who saw them remain and bachelor the rest of life. We were about to decide to go in the Mill house until it ceased raining and then return, when Mrs. Brown, (one of the best rind cleresf ladies I ever knew) kindly offered us shelter Then those sour faces resumed their former sweeness an 1 in a few minutes we were upt the hill, in the house, divested our selves of our “bonnets, bats and shawls,” and was readj to dance, but we bad no music. The band which had been employed had liofarrivecl, and we were about to give up the idea of dancing, w'hen Joe., who is always ready to do anylhig to pro mote the pleasure of others, (he never dances himself) offerd his services to go after it—he went —in a few minutes it was there, and then the enjoyments beg-n ; gbrffe dancing, some playing cards, and enjoying themselves as they best liked. After about two hours din ner was announced, and we all repaired to the table to partake of some of the best “chuck" I evertaseld, and there was a plenty of it, I believe we had enough for seventy five, (not such as Hal.) It was a fine dinner arid speaks well for the young ladies as cooks, or their mothers. The collation being over, we returned to our dancing etc., which was kep t up un til! about five o’clock, when we returned home with only the regret that,, “fin e flies on such rapid wings away.” I would like to thank Mrs. Brown, for kindnesses, but words are 100 weak and I will have to wait untill I can thank her in deeds, and not mere words. Si. P. S. Uucle Ephraim’s porter took his linnen duster along, but he says it made him mad every time he looked at it. S. Union Agricultural Society. Saturday, May 20th, 1876. Editor Hktister: —Of course the hog farm was ably discussed, and it was gen erally consented that meat we would raise. In a few months grease will be running at every pore; in fact, the woods are now literally covered with pigs. Not satisfied at this, the question of a stock law,not life fence law, but, a law to compel every man to keep his stock on his own domain, is to be dis cussed at our next regular meeting Selah ! how long will we t ave to talk about this important question, in some shape or other, before the great day will come, and the hearts of every tiller of the soil niad’e feel glad ? We are ri bw tickling our mother earth to make her do her very best; and she is making some fair promises on her part. Although wheat is somewhat injured bv rust ; yet we will have cake for breakfast. • • Oats is looking well and has no dis ease at present. Corn is small hut looks healthy, Three-founhs of our cotton is to a stand, and looks and is doing well, like it always .does when at alow price. Sorgo looks beautiful, and it now makes us think of the sweet time ahead. Our home made manure is also in the lead. Hands working fine, and our courts? are deciding that contracts must be ful. filled. Before you hear from me again it will require great strategy to out-general “general green.” Yours truly, . - t Plow Boy. P. S.—Judge : After we adjourned the boys all fell about in the shade of some trees and held a kind of informal inhering, and told me to say for them, “three cheers for Colquitt and Floyd.” They say : “Although Colquitt did not make a big speech at Augusta, that he is hot the only great'man that can’t mak" i great speech.” I and you know that by ourselves. P. B. Death of Davitl F.. Montgomery. A pall of gloom was cast over Cov ington on Friday morning last, when it was announced that Mr. David F. Mont gomery was dead ! ‘ Uncle Davy,” as he was mofe familiarly known to every bo dy in ' his Section, was one of the oldest and most prominent ci'izens of this county, and was greatly beloved by all who knew him. He was kind and gen- orous, ami was ever animated by the no blest impulses of an honest heart. He had been a membo of the Primitive Baptist church for more than halt a cen tury, and died in the full hope ot receiv iug lus rewaid in eternal happiness for his undying faith in his Master's saving grace. Few persons attain tho happy state of mind regarding their future state that blessed the latter end of David F. Montgomery. Though afflicted for many years with the depressing diseaso of dyspepsia, he never murmured or com plained, but boro his sufferings with oa tience and Christian fortitude. lie leaves his aged companion, who for near two thirds of a century has shared will) him the pleasures and the tria's of this life, to mourn iu sad bereavement, his departure. 1> <t the grief of “Ainu MatfiaH” Montgomery is greatly neutral ized and ameliorated by lx r abiding faith in the love of Him whom she has so steadfastly served thro igh the long years of her life. David. F. Montgom ery was about 84 years of age. He died at tho residence of his son-in-law, Capt. J. E. McConnell, on Thursday last, and was buried on Saturday.—[Star.
