I arson W , who has been trav elling in some ot the lower counties of this State, tells us a centennial court ship that happened over eighty years ago, that he heard related while on his trip. He says the custom was for the suitor to hold the candle while the young lady was at work of an evening. At a certain house where there was a young lady. A young man a stranger, stopped to stay ail night. As was the custom in those days he took the candlo to hold for Miss Mary, while she plied the nee dle and thread. After aivhile the young man said, ‘Miss Mary’ Tin a good mind to burn you ! ‘What for’ ? She said. ‘Because you wont have me?’ He said. She replied. ‘l’ll have you it you’ll have me’, Thus ended the first chapter. In the morning as the young man was about to leave, he shook hands with Misß Mary and asked her it she was of the same opinion she was last night, She answered in accents low and tender. ‘I am, if you are.’ Be said be ready, for in tl ree weeks I will be back here and marry yon—which he did.. There was an honest simplicity, and earnestness about courtship and marriage in those days, that some ot our latter day lovers would do well to profit by, and if the fair ones don’t speak out, the young men ought to burn them, because they won’t have them.
