Hints for the Month.
•Fodder pulling’ is the heaviest work
of this month. In most of the Cotton
States the plan is to await the partial
ripening of the corn, and then srtip off
the blades, cure an bundle for long for'
age. There is no better provender for
plough animals than corn fodder, but it
is the conviction of many successful
farmers that tho excellency of the fodder
is just about equal to the depreciation of
the corn.
If tho corn is in the ‘dough stale’ the
blades are full of sap, and when cured
are wholesome, fattening provender.
But is not the corn caused to shrink and
lose what the fodder has gained in val
ue! We have never tested tho expsri
inont, and can only remind our readers
that they who plant largely of corn
should experiment on this point. l’ull.
iug, curing and hoeing fodder is a tedi
ous, troublesome job, that costs heavily,
and if it is done at the sacrifice of the
corn r crop, eoonomy suggests that we
should pull no fodder, for a lrrge, round,
plump ear ot corn is as easily gathered
ns a shriveled one. Oat straw, pea vines,
crab grass, clover aud rag weed, will
each and all supply us with a most ad
mirable substitute for corn fodder. One
acre of millet, sorghum, or corn, heavily
manured and drilled thickly in two feet
beds and plughod ones, will make more
good fodder than ten acres ot corn
grown in tho usual way. Then, readers,
count the coat of making these crop?,
and it ‘pulling fodder’ is an expensive
operation, quit it at once. ‘A penny
savod is a penny made,’ should be every
farmer,s motto.
The present lias been a year of varied
experience. Its winter months were
warm, spring Cold and wet, early summ Q r
cool enough for spring, and a largo grain
crop to .harvest when tlm summer crop
needed tho farmers presence and labor,
oncrensed the difficulties; but the cotton
or money crop has been laid by, and
whether good bad or iudifferut,it should
have every atteutiou paid it until it has
left the farmer’s hands. Prepare, there
fore, tor its harvesting. Get the baskets
and sacks ready at onoc, clean up about
the gin house, repare the press, and
have all things .ready, when cotton pick,
ings begin, to gin and pack as rapidly
as possible, and sell or ship as soon as
possible.
Early sales in a home market we be
lieve to be the best policy lor the aver
age farmer, and especially to tins ceii'
tennial jubilee, political e’eotion year,
when doubtless roguery burglary and ar
gon will claim a full share of public at
tention. We are, however, anticipating
though it is well to be forwnrued.
It there be leisure time this month ii
is the best season tor sproutin'; old lam's
to destroy suuli posts as sasatras and the
jH-rsiinnion. l’Vnce corners may bo ra
ked out and much manure can be com
posted on the farm.
Hygiene suggest that all rank weeds
should be turned under, or cut down and
composted, all densely shaded places
should be scraped, aud the whitewash
brush used freely about the premises.
Thousand of dollars have been spent
avnually for quinine and other antisep
tic medicines wh : oh might be saved, if
tarmers would but look about them in
time and remove cruses of disease which
lie around on ad sides. Au ounce of
preventitive is worth a pound of cure.
Remember this, and immediately take
steps to prevent the unwelcome chill
that w ill make jour teeth clatter like au
omitty wagon over a rough t oad before j
the end of September.
It jou ‘ailed to secure a stand of tur
nips in July, sow again any lime during
August, the earlier the belter. Sow the
seed abundantly, cover lightly, and press
with the hoe or roller. Kasy work to
thin out if the plant coincs tip too thick
ly-
The vegetable garden should be look
ed after, mid the cabbages for winter
use be set out, and the second crop of
Irish potatoes planted if not planted ear
lier. If showers are frequent almost
any kind of vegetables planted and a t'e-
paying crop made.
Stoek wil begin to need attention and
extra feed as the natural grasses and
weeds are getting tough and bitter. Salt
heavily and give a tsaspoonful of sulphur
mixed with salt, to each head of cattle,
stoek, sheep and plough slock three
times a day.— Rural Carolinian.
