Rockdale Paper Mill Sunday
School.
On last Sunday afternoon ye local moun
ted a fleet steed, put spur an 1 aW ty I>e
went over the hills to the Paper Mill,
After rest aud a pleasant obit chat with
friends and acquaintances at the resi
dence of Capt A. H. Zachry, the an
nouncement Whs made that it was time
to go to the school house, to carry out
the object of tlie meeting, viz : A Sun
day School celebration an 1 the hearing
of an address from the orator ot the
day, Mr. J. A. R. Stewan of Conyers.
At 4 p. m. the school was called to ordet
by John li. Uarville, Superintculent,
after which, two or three pieces were
sung by the school, led by Prof. A. M.
I Helms; among the number, “Lights
Along the Shore,’’ “Ist the Sweet Bye
and Bye,” etc., Ac. Then Rev. J. L
Stewart real a chapter and prayed.
Supt. J. R. Harvillc in a few appropriate
wotds introduced Mr. J. A. B. Stewart,
the speaker. After a few introductory
remarks, the speaker, with an apology
for not being a practiced orator, drew
forth his manuscript and commenced to
read in a clear tone, though evidently
under embarrassment.
ins srtiKc ii.
The address, according to the gentle
man’s own remarks, hacked by the ocu
lar proof of the audience, was interlar
ded with rather too many drinks—of
water But leaving out the embarrass
ment and the water drinking of the
speaker the address was not only a good
one but cliook lull of splendid thought
and excellent advice to both old and
young. We are unable, for want of
space and time, to even give a synopsis
of his remarks. Suffice it to say
that all went home well pleased with the
thoughts uttered it not with the manner
of delivery. Other songs were then
sung, and a few well timed remarks were
made by Col. J. C. Barton, after which
the benediction was pronounced by Rev.
J. L. Stewart.
Several wore on hand from Conyeis
and the surrounding country, and all
went away pleased with themselves,
their guests and the occasion.
THE RIGHT MAN
IN THE BIGHT PLACE.
It bag got to be a fashion, now,
In every place and clime,
For folks to keep an instrument
To tell of passing time :
Some keep a watch—some keep a clock
And frequently they mix them ;
But if they should get broke, you know.
They need tome one to fix them !
As that’s my trade, I’ll tell you this—
My workmanship ne’er failt —
My shop is found at Thompson’s Stobe —
My name is J. H. Hales.
lam told that Conyers has long needed a
first-class Watchmaker and Jeweler.
A graduate in the Horological Science of
Kulinskis’ Horological Institute, New York ;
having had three years practice in the United
States Watch factory —going from the lowest
to the highest step known to the profession in
manufacturing parts,—with an ex
perience of six years in repairing under the
instruction and supervision of one of the
finest workmen Scuth, I feel I can offer my
services to the public as a first-class work
man. I have located permanently in Con
yers, and will do fine work at reasonable
prices. USTBEPAIKINO FINE WATCHES

Wedding rings made to order. I challenge
any one to show greater skill or taste in re

Several of our couhtfy friends, who
were in town on Monday, Were making
enquiry for Iwigging and ties ; and we
learn that there will be •evef'tl bales of
new cotton on onr market during the
week. Good times very near here !
The primal y vote tor candidates for the
Legislature, polled <Jn Saturday last, wore
counted on Monday, ad the following
is the result of the consolidated vote :
B. F. Carr 200.
E. B. Rosser, , 2*53.
AV. L. Book :. 243.
YVhen the result was announced Judge
Rosser came down, leaving Carr and
Peek in the field. The Democratic Ex
ecutive Committee declared no nomina
tion. The race will he a “scrub one,”
and we may see a halt dozen more can
didates in the field, but we hope not.
Let Carr and Peek make the race, and
may the highest persimmon be in reach
of tlie longest pole.
W. Z. Overbuy, who was in Coving
ton Monday, says that all the candidates
down there are alive and kicking. He
says Wnl Griffin, who is a candidate for
the Legislature, is doing all he can iu
Gwinnett and YY r a , ton. lie wants those
two counties to “leg for him."
There was a great number of conver
sions here Saturday—from Radicalism to
Democracy. Tito change made some of
them very sick —throwing off the old
and taking on the new,
YY r e are glad to state that the country*
man, w’lio was struck w ith lighting on
onr streets on Saturday Inst, and hail
such a hard time of it in Duke’s collat'd
patch, is in a fair way to recover.
The great “will buster” gained bis case
on Monday, in our County Court, and
pockets bis first fee on a credit.
Our town has been very quiet this
week. YY r e hope it is the calm that pre
cedes the storm. The fleecy staple will
make things lively before we go to press
many more times.
Crooked whisky had an airing on our
streets Saturday last.
VY'e hope the stringers that tarried
within our gates on Saturday will express
no opinions, formed that day, ot our
people. YY*e can, and often do, irnke a
better showing.
A good many good and wise Demo.-
cruts are satisfied that mass nominations
are not the thing. It was well enough to
make tlie experiment, but we hope it
will never be repeated in our county.
Any iii.iri w'itb his eyes half open has
learned that you get no party expression
in that manner. YVe hope some braying
man will puzzle himself until a fairer
and belter way of nominating may be
arrived ;t.

‘‘J. M. 8.,” a Conyers correspondent
of the Atlanta Times, had a very little
to say about Mrs. Huberts' grand Concert
in Sunday’s issue of that paper. He
says “llic house was full of compliment
ary tickets.” Mistake No. 1. lie said
everybody had a complimentary ticket
except himself. Mistake No. 2. He
said the music was furnshed by the Con
yers Carnet Hand. Mistake No. 3.
Mrs. Roberts’ Concert was a grand
success, ard not one except ‘‘J. ML B.”
has been heard to express a contrary
opinion She was ably assisted by some
ot the best musical talent in our town,
and a Conyers audience was never better
entertained. The Conyers Cornet Band
is a favorite ot all our citizens, and on
this occasion they volunteered their ser
vices and played several excellent pieces
before the performance commenced. On
the stage was three excellent pianos of
very sweet tone, and touched by t! e
light fingers ot some of our best pei
formers discoursed music that would
calm the soul of a savage.
Mrs. Roberts deserves and lias secur
ed the thanks of our best citizens for the
great tr.'at; and there is not one of us
so poor or so mean but would be glad to
pay the sum of her admission fee (2.5
cents) every week for a Concert half so
good.
The receipts at the door attest the ap
preciation by our citizens of.Mrs. Rob
erts untiring efforts to please. Our
Court Room is a large one, and it was
Htarally packed witli humanity, and ten
would more than cover the number,
outside of the performers, who were ad
mitted ‘'complimentary.”
