May there be ere the Summer aun noxl shall beam ! THIS^YEAR’s'wOOLCLIP. Why Domestic Producers are Unable to Compete with Foreign Growers. Leading brokers in wool view Iho re cent advance in this staple as purely spasmodic, and any that no long as the woolen manufactories remain in their present state of financial distress just so long will the wool growers of this coun try experience difficulty in realising pay ing prices for the raw matersal. This state of affairs they charge to the ill ad justed tariff. They say that this tarill has sot only failed to produce the found ly-predictcd result for ‘‘home manufac ture,’' but it has actually done injury to the domestic production of merino wool. According to the best estimates, it is an admitted fact that the clip of fleece wool In the States cast of the Missippi has of recent years been eoutiuualy de clining, and is now reduced from about 140,000,000 pounds in 1867 to a quantL ty estimated at not above 120,000,000 pounds. Id supprt of this statement, they bring forward the authenticated facts that in seven years the clips of Ohio and New York decreased from 28, 000,000 pounds and 15,0 >O,OOO pounds respectively to 18,000,000 pounds and 8,000,000 pounds. In a report to the Chamber of Commerco. a commitee of the New York wool trade say: While the production of the less pro tected combing wools has notoriously increased by a large percentage in the old wool growing States, the clip of the highly protected clothing wools of the meriuo variety oan be safely asserted to have declined to hardly sev?nty per cent, of the amount prodnoed in iB6O. If ab solutely reliable statistics could be ob tained, we have no doubt that a still greater decrease in production would bo shown. Wool |growing has increased only in the far West, and even tbeio itß strides were quite ns rapid nnder the low tariff of 1857 to 1861 as they have been at any period since. In addition to the fluctuating measure of values, thvse gentlemen find a special cause of suffering to the woolen industry in the fact that “the extraordinary ac tivity prevailing during our war, and immediately nftei the war, brought with it a sudden and .large 'increase of ma chinery that we have never yet kept era ployed tor an) length of time without creating a surplus stock ot somo one class of goods. Our manufactures are prone to rush into the (production of such clnsses of goods as a meuientary demand has rendered profitable, and tlio invariable result is an overproduction of these tabries " As an instance ot this, look at the recent large woolen sales in this city, where goods sold at 50 cents on the dollar. Such au overproduction, they say, 'may happii tu Enrope, but there manufactures relieve themselves ol their surplus at a comparatively small tuicnlbu “by consigning their goods to foreign markets, where their oherpness has already introduced them. Our man ufacturer, having made his goods out ot highly taxed woo 1 , has no such outlet for them, and is compelled either to await the slow opera; ion of timo or to submit to a heavy sacrifice by forcing his surplus ou the home market .m competition with his similarly Jsitualed neighbors. Id support of ibis position, which is in accord with the opiuion of the leading brokers, they point to the flourishing woollen industry ot Canada, which, with its thiee millions oi inhabitants, imports or consumes as much Cape wool as the whole of our country with its forty-two millions of people. The total wool qip of the United 9 ales last yeir was 108,01)0, <0l) poun s. This yetr it will probaly fall a little short of this. Yel in keeping up fliis nggre ! gate the States west of tlm Misssppi hate [increased their production some 16,000,000 pounds, an amount equal to the decrease in the States cast of the Missippi. Thus the better class of cloth wools arc falling off, while the iufcrioi qualities are increasing. It is uiless to talk of exporting om wools, for the home market, owing tr the tariff, is the highest piiccd. Aus tralian wools bring 32 cents in this niaiket and only 28 cents in the London m.nket. But. the Australian grower can realize a profit by selling his clip at 17 cents while the American grower requir es 30 cents to make the s.axie quality of wooUgrowing profitable, Hence it is that notwithstanding the high tariff the growers arc not benefited because the manufactures cannot afford to them a paying price and come into competition with the belter ebualiiics of cloths from foreign markets. Last year at the com mencement of tfie clip the price ranged fiom 40 to 45 scents ; this year it was from 28 to 32 cents, wholly owing to the prostration in the manufacturing interests The general opinion seems to be that the rise of from 3 to 4 cell's within the past week was brought about by spec ulators, ami that there can he no real advance until there is a rvival of busi ness in the manufacturing districts. Thejreports that the Carlist war and the war in the Danublan provinces of Turkey wculd tend to lessen the {Euro pean supply and bring about an increase in nricc throughout the wool markets of the world are without any foundation. The supply from both of these districts is so small comparitivly that its total loss would have no visible effect upon the general market. Resides the Ser vian wool is a long, coarse, hairy staple, used only for carpets, and does not come in competition with either the Aus tralian, Cape, South American, or Uni ted States wools. Hewitt’s Great Speech. During last’s session of the house, after , the disgracelul scene between Messrs. Cox and K asson bad tormina ted, and the amende honorable had passed between them, the floor was ob tained by Mr. Ilewitt, who proceeded at a quarter past five o’clock, the gas in the halls having been extinguished, it being broad daylight, to make one of the most remarkable speeches ever pronounced in the halls ot congress. It was up to the best days of the repudlic, aud would have done honor to Clay, Webster, Calhoun or Bcuton. The bouse listened with the most profound attention to every word that fell from hts lips, which frequently called forth tremendous ap plause from the house and gallerries. lie begati by a careful review of Kasson,s speech iu every statement and particular. Iu a masterly, logical ard earnest man- ner he spoke ot Governor Tilden. lie met aud disputed eVerv one of the char ges effecting Gov. Tilden’s integrity, of his utiiou sentiments, his course during the win, his position with refeience to the Tweed ling, his connections with railroad corporations, in fact bis whole political history, lie spoke in emphatic terms, exonoraling Mr. Tilden from ev- ery charge against him. Mr. 'Hewitt makes no pretense as an orator; lie is a plain business man, but on this occasion he seemed to speak in a manner unao countable to bis friends aud surprising to himself. He knew Gov. Tilden, lie was bis personal and intimate friend and as sociate. llis record was perfectly fa miliar to him in all its particulars, and he was prepared to speak with a full knowledge of what he was talking about. II is withering sarcassm and invective, an addressed to Kassou, have lmd no paral lel in this exciting session of congress. The days of Blain and llill were tamo in comparison with this terrific phiilipic which was utterd by Mr. Hewitt. It was the unanimous opinion of all his friends that he ulleily overwhelmed aud ernshed lvasson. At the close of his speech he pronounced a glowing eu’ogy upon the statesmanship anq patriotism ol Mr. Tilden, and sat down amidst most tumuluous applause, and every member on the democialio side, offering their congratulations and utterly stopping all proceedings of the house, and rendering the spaekur w holly powerless to preserve order. It was fully five minutes before auy thing like deliberation could bo ob tained in order to entertain even a mo lion ot adjoiucieuU Never was a vin dication more complete and petect; and never a defeat more thorough and over whelming thau that which Kasson re ceived for his unprovoked and wanton attack upon the democratic presidential candidate. Nr. Hewitt is a man rather delicate in physique, and considering the fact that he had been up during the entire night without a particle of sleep he must have been greatly exhausted by the fatigue of a contiuuos session of over twenly.fom hours. Yet he showed no signs whatever ot physical aud meutal exhaustion, but spoke in vigo- and pow er that could hove been expected only under most favorable circomstances. He lias established his reputation by this effort as one of the foremost of Amer ican statesmen and orators.—- Cinctnnat ti GastH. W i it. Sfl every county.. ■—’ —IN THE— GOLD {SIN!
