Fx tiact from lion 11. 11. Hill, Hag
speech in Atlanta:
My countrymen, have you ever stude
led this wonderful American system of
free government ! Have you compared
it with former systems, and noted how
our farthers sought to avoid their de
lects? Let me commend this study to
every American citizen to-day. To him
who loves liberty, it is more enchanting
thau romance; more bewitching than
love, aud more elevating than auy other
science. Our tuthers adopted this plan,
with eniprovenvjnta iu the details, which
cannot be found iu any other system.
With what anoble impulse ot patriotism
they came together trom diflerent Stales,
and join their couneels to perfect this
system, thencefoward to ho known as
ihe American system of Free Constitu
tional Government-” The snows‘that tall

thau the motives w hich begot it. Tho
fresh dew-laden zephyr from tho orange
groves of the South are not sweeter than
the hopes its advent inspired. The
tight of our own sytubo’ie eagle, though
ho blows his breath oo the sun, cannot
be higher than its expected destauy.
Have the motives which so inspired our
fathers become all corrubt in their chil
dren 1 Are the hopes that sustained, them
all poisoned to list Is that high>expeo
ted destiny all eclipsed, and before us
noon ?
No, no, forever no 1 Patriots North,
patriots South, patriots everywhere! let
us hallow this year of jubilee by bur
ying all our sectional animosities. Let
us close onr ears to the men and the par
ties that teach us to hate each other I
liaise high that flag ot our fathers! Let
Southern breezes kiss it! Lot Southern
skies reflect it! Southern patriots will
lova it; Southern sons will defend it,
and Southern heroes will die tor if! And
on its folds unfurl beneath the heavens?
let our voiees unite nd sweU the loud
invocation j Flag of onr Union, wave on!
Wave ever 1 But wave over freemen, not
over subjects 1 Wave over States, uot
over provinces’ And now, let the voices
of patriots from the North and from the
East, and from the West, join our voi
ces from tne South, and semi to heaven
one universal according chorus ; Wave
on’. Flag of our fathers wave forercr?
