In another place in this issue we gave hotice that a criminal case was brought before justice Bently ou Monday, to- wii; A ease of the State vs. J. 11. Several wit ness where examined and the whole day was taken up in the trial of the case. Considerable feeling was manifested by the parties dud witnesses ill the adjudi cation _of the qitostio'ii; Defendants wore charged with the offense of tres pass, in the taking arid carrying away fifty bundles of fodder, the properly of said A. J. P. Crowford, from his premis es, of the value of fifty cenii. The evi dence of the parties and the statesmeuts of defendants were conflicting. The case was submitted without argument of counsels,and after a short conference the court decided that there was not suffi cient evidence to bind the prisoners over to appear before a court for final trial; They were therefoefe discharged. Furlough .The Board of Trustees of the Conyers Male and Female Hiijh School at its meeting last week, granted Prof J. F. McClelland (joint principal) leave of ab sence for one ) ear, to teach school at Snapping Shoals. He will resume his duties here in 1878. The next thing we will propaply here, will be some country school teacher getting a furlough to itfafeff an extended tour of Eorope, and to grand utrivefseties there. Schools snd gehool houses are built for the ben '■tt of pupiles and not tutors. The Hoard may or may not know the wants f < the F%b School in 1-S7S. Charity, A petition is going the rounds here tor the Yellow Fever Suffeies of Savan nah. They are in great need. Our people ought to lend ail helping hand. Gloatpn Judge presiding, T. J. Cliristion, Solicit or* I A judgment was reudered on a forth coming bond in favor of F. J. White head, Sheriff, vs. Joel Smith and B. F. Carr, security. The case of T. 11. Bryans vs. William Slodic, fi fa and illegality, was continued till Thursday (to-day) by agreement. A. C. McCalla, attorney tor plaintiff, A. M. Helms and A. C. Perry, attorneys lor defendant. A title to distribute money, in the hands of F. J. Whitehead, Sheriff, pro cMids of sale of T. J. Nelm's property, was also set dow ii for same day, (Thurs day), with instructions by the court for Sheriff to inform parties interested of thd time. ' No criminal cases weft tried. P., was associated with the court, by consent, on the trial of the case. Justice Bently refused, on motion of defendants eouftesl, to transfer case to any other Judicial officer. Birton attended the sixth Congressional Convention at the above place last week as t representative of Rockdale County, and the Rockdau-. Register. (See proceedings in this isue) From parties that were there and others we learn that the Col. made a stiring speech, in favor of this end of the dis trict. He promised to give our readers a report of his tiavelsf fcc but modesty or something else caused hitu to neglect the important duty. Town Council. The CommissitfHefa of the town of Conyers met at Council Chamber on Monday night at o’clock. Present— Hons S F Speer, CliSlrilian, J 11 Alinatid, J W Langford, N W Maddox, and W E Treadwell. The efficient Clerk, Dr A C W Travis, and P G McCullough, the trustworthy Marshal, were also on hand ready for business. The Finance Committee were given further time to make report ou purchase of land for colored cemetery. The Chairman then announced that the trial of cases was in order. Messrs E Thorns and L II Turner were found riot guilty of the offense of quarrelling and otherwise actiug in dis ordefly manner within Hie limbs of the to wii fit’ ConyenL Wash Oliver, p o c, was fined oue dollar and costs for quarrelling; swearing, etc. Reuben David; p' o c, was assessed a like amount for the same offense. Council then adjourned. A called meeting was also held on Saturday before, the 9th inst. Full board present except Hon Jno Langford. Jesse Hall and Jno Henderson, both slightly colored, were up for kicking lip a disturbance and otherwise acting badly in the Queen City, at Mitie time previ ous. The former was requested to remit tiitee dollars and hosts; and the latter po tiled up the same amount niittus one dol lar, after performing the aforesaid duties or obligations that Were discharged without a day.
