The Bti.nu la ting effect ot the dressing will give a p„,h to the crop which may make amends for the delay in sowing. A small addi tion ot Peru via a guano, fish manure, or other. ammoniacal matter, to the fertili ser intended to be used, or the adoption q{ one more highly nitrogenized, is very advisable in the contingency of deterred sowing. '* * JtTK ought to have been sown before this, and where not done it should be gotten in as rapidly ns possible. Do your best bv the land, and you may find by proper attention to its conddicn and the use of a little good fertilizer that the crop w ill turn out mote profitable titan it some times does. BUCKWHEAT should be cut when about half t!ie seed is ripe, and before severe trost. l*ut in small stacks, and thresh as soon as possi ble to avoid the loss by shattering. Ihe a idition of a little sail to the straw wlien it is stacked, keeps it better and makes it more relished by stock. It ought to be careful y saved, as it makes good lorage. ROOTS AND PUMPKINS ought all to be stored before frost injures them. Do not allow the roots to be bruis ed i'l digging and bundling, as decay is thereby superinduced. Potatoes should be dug as soon as the vines aio dead, but let the ground he dry when it is done. KAIJ, FLOWING, except on soils very light and porous, is generally admitted to be profitable. VY hy •s jhe mechanic idle and the worlsii<>| dosed? What party has produced thi result? Tod and I tindersUnd thi question as well as the ablest orator. Ii lias resulted from the innladm'inistratio nflicted upon us by tlio Republican party, and it must be held responstbl' lor its misdeeds. It Is no answer to in to shake the bloody shirt in my laee am. talk about a war that happened let tears a“o. I have been in the South The Southern peonle are anxious foi peace ami harmony. As well might you expect a man with one side paialyzed to walk easily as to expect the people to walk onward to prosperity if the South is destitute ; if the business of one hall of the country is paralyzed and its people impoverished. When yop meet aIU pub lic.™ citizen who is idle, ask him why ii is. Tell him it is because ot the out rageous expenditures ot taxes drawn from a prostrated people. The reduc tion ot the late Democratic House amounted to thirty millions ot dollars, and I leli you the Government's expen ditures could have been reduced twenty millions more without any injury, and they will bo reduced, if the House lias its way during its two years of set vice, eighty millions of dollars. Mr. Garfield of Ohio s i|d on the floor of the Souse that the Democratic party could make reductions in a manner they, the Repub licans, could not, because, when they turned around and reduced expenses, they trod on soma friend’s toes. The remedy is to elect a Democratic Presi dent, whose past experience will enable him to grapple with such subji cts. Sam luel J. Tilden reduced the expenses of tlie State of New Ycrk SS.OOu.OIH) iu a sin gle year, and I guarantee that if lie is elected President, with a cooperative House and Senate, he w ill save to the taxpayers two hundred millions in the lour years of liis administration. I his meeting to night convinces me that the same spirit pervades this State as in Ohio and Indiana, and information 1 have from both States leads me to think they will be carried by the Democracy, despite Mr. Blaine's eloquence. Shooting Stars. We make a few selections from an In teresting paper on “‘Shooting—Stars, by Plot. (J. A. Young, published in the Boston Journal of Chemistry. These shooting'Btars, he says, arc very small, for the most part weighing certainly not more than a few grains, and possibly only some thousandths o!' a grain—mere particles or clouds of dust, which are travelling in apace under the same laws as those which govern the motions of the p'anets and comets, and with a velocity as great. Their least velocity is more than thirty times that ot a cannon-ball. When they encounter our atmosphere, this velocity is destroyed by the resist ance, and accenting to well-known laws, their energy of motion is converted in'.o heal of intensity sufficient to make them incaudeesnt, aud even to dissipate any solid portions in vapor. Their numbers are very great. About forty per hour ie a fair average for one station or nearly one thousand each day. It the calcula tion is carried out for the whole earth, allowing that at each station all are ob served which come within a circle two hundred miPs in diameter, the total nil liber reaching the earth every day is found to lie about five millions. Indeed ; Prof. Newton, who is pel haps the high-* lest authority on this subject, sets the number still higher, at seven and a half millions. A curious fact is, that the ! hourly numbers increase from sunset to suprise by some titty percent. The rea son is simoly that in Die evening we are, so to speak, behind the earth as it rush- J es through space, and see only those which overtake us; in the morning, on the other hand, we are in front, and see all wc meet, as well as those we over-1 take. The most remarkable discovery ot r> cent times in respect to tiiese bodies re ntains to be mentioned. It is found that in four well marked eases the orbits ot impellent meteoric swarms coincide ex actly with the mbits of well-known com ets; that the swarm ot meteors follows in the wake ol the comet, and is some' how connected with it. ibis discovery dates from ISG6, when Schiapparelli first proved the connection between the Leo nids (November meteors) and Teropll’s comet. Since then the same thing has been shown of the Pei acids, Lyrids and Biel ids. - -•-♦ • ♦ ■ “Non v but the brave deserve tbe fair.” And none but the brave can live with some of them. GOD’S MINISTERS. “Are you the mi we vc hired to pleach tor ns?' was the blunt question asked ol one ot the Lord's servants ,Nn, sir, I am not.’ •I ,g parden, are you not the minis ter?’ ‘Ye*, si ; but do you really think I Save born hired to pleach to you?' ‘Why, ye, sir; I was at tin meeting when the vote was taken to raise the money. Did you not mine here expec ting to receive a salary ?' ‘Certainly ; and so does the Governor ot the Slate enter upon his duties, ex peeling to rece. vo a salary; but wou’d you say he is hired to govern the State ?’ , ‘Not exactly.’ ‘And the reason is precisely this,’ con tinued tlie inin'sttT, ‘the (to“ii-.n s elected to fill a certain office, and when you speak of him, you think more of his office than ton tlo of his salary. You do not hire him to do whatever you wish to got him at, but you elect him to an office, fixed beforehand, and expressly defined in the Constitution, and 'lien you fix a salary, that ho rnay attend to his duties without embai rassment. The same is true of a clergyman. You do not hire him to do a job of preaching. When you elect a man to au office, you expect him to do what the Constitution siys.’— Dr. Morion. THE RQ€IWMLE Register.
