A Keokuk tout il, whotat waiting at St. Jowpli lor the train lor Quiiny ~l‘ other day, while paoing the platform, was necof ted by an old gentleman, and the two entered into a conversation. In 'the oourae of the pow wow or Keokuk man ascertained that the stranger was * ministry of the go*i*l, and, like liinwelf, was bound lor Quincy. Tlicy r.al in the eatne sent in the car, and alter they had traveled some distance the Keokuk tour ist pulled a flask from his pocket, held it to the light, pulled the cork, and, turning to his companion, remarke I: •I m ver drink when 1 am at home, but when 1 am on the toad, constantly drink ing all kinds ol wa'er, I take a little for the stomach’s sake,’ and taking a mod erate drink, he politely offered the flask to the minister. •My friend,’ said the preacher, ‘I atu n minister of the gospel, and have be.-n for forty years. In that time a drop ol liquor has not touched my lips, but, as you seem to Ins a gentleman, and cousid ering the circumstances, I will take n drop c.r two,' and placing the flats* to his mouth he swallowed about halt the con tents. They bad proceeded but a few miles and the reverend gentleman was waumng up. ‘My brother, I’m a preacher, and havu't drank a drop of liquor for forty yearn, but 1 have a pain, and if you will let me have a drink from your flask I think it will do me good.’ The flask was passed, and about half of the remaining contents was taken. The divine began to feel good, lie was talkative and exhilarated. As the train pulled up nt the station he reached over and taking the flank from the seat, he re marked: •You slice, ’in preacher of the gospel; havu’t drink any forty years for a long period of whisky,’ and the balance of the contents of the flask disappeared down his throat. up for lost time, eh?' said the Kookukian. ‘Losht time can never he regained, 'in a goshpelo of the minishtry, hut the watersh had. Got any more—hie licker,' and as he caressed another flask, lie re marked : ‘Shec, ray fren, forty iniministry. Never drunker-drop hi verdrop. Water bad. Makes me hie sick, and lake a little for the stomaeh-hic sake,' and he keeled ove r and slept until the train reached t Quincy. As our Keoktik man was making his way out of-the depot a hand was laid ou his arm, and turning he saw his ministe rial companion, who remarked : ‘Two score years have I been a minis ter of the gospel. I'm in a strange laud, and 1 feel the ueed of something to sus tain me. I haven’t drank a drop for 40 years, but if you have any whisky handy I believe I could take a drop The Keokuk man muz'ed, and the last he saw of his acquaintance lie was lean ing over the corner of a Quincy bar explaining to the bar keeper how for 40 years he had preached the gospel and never, U\ The trouble with him was it was too long betweeh drinks. — Jieokuk ( Iowa) Constitution.- It ia Better It is better to wear a calico dress with* out trimming if it he paid for, than to owe the shop-keeper for the most ele gant Bilk, cut aud trimmed in the most bewitching manner. After a strange man had finished eat ing a hearty meal at one of the stands in the City Hall Market, he remarked to the w oman: ‘As 1 was sitting down to this meal 1 said to myself that 1 1? bet ons dollar against the dinner that the greenback candid sics would not carry a single State. If they do, you have won the dollar and shall have it ’ ‘1 want thirty five cents of joti,’ she replied, pulling off her comforter. ‘Or I’ll bet you five dollars against a meal that the Democrats carry New York Stipe,’ he continued. ‘I want my pay, or there’ll be trouble right hero!’ she exclaimed, slipping off her .bon net. ‘Or I’ll bet ihe same sum, on the swmc terms, that the Repubhoana will carry it,’ he remarked, as lie wiped off his sandy goatee. ‘I never bet, and I want my pay !’ she culled out, being now all ready lor action. ‘Great Heavens! but look at the odd* I offer yoti!’ he gasped. ‘I not only let you bet tui either side, hut I offer you the iv.ost feat fill odds that have ever b'en piven since the advent of the Christian ora!' ‘I can’t help the odds,’ she answered as she got hold of his coat tails. ‘1 ou don’t leave here till I get my money.’ Or, I'll bet you $35 against this 85 cent debt,’ he went on, ‘that neither Ilayes nor Tilden will be elected. One of them must bo, simply to permit you to coin $35 dollars out ol my hard earns irigs Great Jigs! but such another offir was i) ver known since Oliver Cromwell kept a fighting dog! ‘Thirty five cents!’ she shrieked, pull ing him around. ‘Last, but not least, I'll bet you forty to one that I haven't had thirty five cents about mo for a month ! Come, now, I offer you every chance to win.’ She gave him two solid kicks, and was designing and drafting a third, when he made a bolt and left a coat tail in her gtasp. While an officer was looking lor him around the market he was placidly surveying the Soldiers’ Monument and picking Lis teeth with a straw. — Detroit tree Dress. Effect of Astonishment. lie walked into the drug store and eiiiti : ‘Gimme a glass of sody.' ‘What syrup will you have ?’ said the boy. ‘Syrup 1 1 don’t waut any syrup. I want sody !’ The hoy put the g’ass under the faucet and turned oil the soda wa’er full head. As it struck the glass with a hissing noise the stranger said : ‘Gosh all Jerusalem, what’s that!’ and starting backwards fell over a siool, and a* he tried to get up he brushed against a | orfumery sand, which causoda bottle to fall off and strike him on the hack of the head. At the same time the boy, thinking something serious had happen ed, dropped tlio glass ou the marble counter, breaking it into ninety-nine pieces. The stranger, with his hand to the back of his head and his eyes protudin r with fright, started lor the street at a speed of twenty miles an hour, and ran plump into the arms of a policehian, w ho, collared him and saul : ‘What’s the matter ?’ ‘Matter!’ said the stranger, ‘why, the drug store lias exploded and I am the only man saved!’ —New Orleans Halle ti 1, Common Sen3e in Ploughing. Teams drawing loads on the ground get a breathing spell on tlio desoeuding ground, while in hloughing the draught is the same trom morning till nigh*. There is a certain number of pounds that teams can draw day after day and not worry them. But if more is added, even as little as fifteen or twenty pounds, they work unsteedily, fret and soon tire. No amount of feeding will keep them in eon dit ion. I have seen many plows iu use on which it would have been an easy mutter to decrease the draught twenty five pounds, and if men were drawing them instead ot horses, it would have been done. It must he plain to every tanner that every pound that ho can take off from the draught of his plow, is so much gained lor his horses. It may he done iu this way : For any soil except sand and gravel, use a steel plow. They cost but little more, ond the draught is enough-less to pay the difference in ploughing twenty acres. In ploughing sod, the colter does a great deal ol the work, and should be kept sharp by forging at the blacksmith’s aud grinding every day if necessary. Ot course it will wear out sooner, but new coulters ate cheaper than new’ teams. Set the coulter in with the plow, the edge squaro in front, with an angle ol tot ty-live from the point to w hich it is attached to the beam. When the shate gels worn out, it is poor econetny to use it any longer, but replace it with anew one. Let the tra ces be as short as will allow the horses to work without hitting against the whifle trees. it the handle crowd continually’ one way, the draught is not right, and if the plow i* s good one, it can easily lie remedied at the clevis. To prevent the horses stepping over the traces in turn i ,g, fasten a weight of three-fourths of a pound, on the outside of each swingle, tree : that is, on the rii>lu end when you turn to the left, or vice versa. Kvery obset ving tarmer knows that horses are susceptible to kindness, and equally so to unkindness. I have seen horses that were working steadily, made reeking with sweat in a short lime by shatp word or a jerk on the bit. Let your horses do their work as you do yours, as easily ns possible, and be as w illing to overlook their mistakes as you would the mist akes of a human being.
