HowthePciplexing Question jj
jfl nswered by the Rev. C. P. IT
Carthy.
The Itev. C. P. McCarthy, who preach,
rs every Sunday in the L Diversity
Building, Washington ■•sqimHN as pas
tor of what is called the American l*rto
Church, endeavored to answer the ques
tion, “Who was Cain’s V/ ife T 'ast eve* ]
ning. He took his text from the fourth
chapter of Genesis and the seventeenth
verso. The preacher said that he had
aelected the peculiar subject announced
at the request of several members of his
congregation. Maintaining that old
theories at, to the meaning of the Bible
stories had ceased to he tenable because
of the increased light of science, he said
that the theory held by many as to
Cain's wife would also have to be aban
doned. “The orthodox answer to the
question," said he, “is ‘perhaps Cain mar.
riod his sister. Well, I don t think he
did. Now, lam not going to shirk the
answering of this question. I hsve a
theory of our race which others do not
believo in. Niue out o ten believe that
the human race cainc from one pair. I
don't believe it. Do you say that is her
etical 7 Perhaps it is, hut this is not a
question to ho answered by those who
cliug to the old theories. That old the
ory can never answer it. Iu the first
place, Cain could not have married his
sister when be departed to the land of
Nod, beennse ho had no sister. M hen
Seth was born Adam was only one hun
dred and thirty years old, a very young
man for those days, and Seth was his
third ‘child. There is no mention of
daughters. In the second place, Cain
departed to a country where there were
p< ople, and he feared these people would
slay him because of his crime, and the
Lord recognized the reality of this dan
ger and set a mark on him that he might
be saved. The Bible nowhere states
that thero were only two people origi
nally created. Adam was the generic
name for the human ram', and ‘male and
female created he them. Do you believe
that negroes and Chinese are the decon
dants of the same progenitors with our
selv< s 1 I don’t. Cain went, over to
the land of Nod, and there became the
chief of a rnce which lie found there.
He built a city, lie couldn't have done
this alone. This, then, must be the an
swer to the question ; there were races
of people upon the earth at the time
Cain was driven out a vagalmnd, and
from this race C\in look his wife."
The preacher dwelt at considerable
length on the lessons to he drawn from
the life of Cain, and exhorted all to a
vold the little sins, for even Cain did not
become a murderer all at once, but was
led up to that great crime by envy and
jealous feelings.
SCOTLAND.
To-day is Scotland’s nntional anniver
sary, and it will be celebrated wberevei
the sun shines ; for though Scotland is
but a small country, sho has poured a
hardy and adventurous race 'hroughout
the world, and whether in the great cen
tres oi trade like New A ork, 01 „in the
Canadian woods,or on Asti alien plains,
no one of her sons will fail upon t>t. An
drew's feast to think of ‘‘Auhl T.ang
Syne." Love of country and fidelity to
her traditions are strong elements in
their strongly marked ohrraoter. Scot
tish nationality is a nohlo product. Its
vat ions elements, mingling in the strug
gle against ltomau power, and the long
contest gainst English aggression, fused
but slowly. The welding wh°n accom
plished was, however, firm, and the steel
was tempered in the rigors of a harsh
climate and polish and in the eonfiict
with a barren soil. The national eliar
aeter became keen, bold, self-reliant, and
the world now conceives of the Scotch
as a people industrious, frugal, inveu
live, religious but not superstitious, can
lions Jbut notoowardly, metaphysically
subtle yet romantic, dowered with all
the money getting virtues and still the
soul of social glee. It is the |>eculiar
good fortune of Scotland that she is
known to all nations and yet has incur
ml the hatred of none. Like other
lands she was rich in poets, painters,
philosephcrs and orators, but in Burns
aud Scott she was blessed with two sons
of geuius who knew her every bill, dale
and river, and held everything about her
in reverence even to the yellow broom,
and yet were such broad and get iai
types ol humanity that the world look
them to its heart and loved even their
prejudices lor their ank \ The names of
her mountains and streams became house
hold words elsewhere, an l the quaint
and carious dialect of her peasantry grew
classical. Who has not listened to the
murmuring of Alton among its green
braes or watched the delicate sjwars of
ice forming along the Ayr, under its
Twa lings, and seen the wonderful pro
cession led by the genius of the stream
come slowly down the tide ? For how
many ot us the banks and braes of Bou-
ny Doon r -mnin always fresh and fair.
Are here any hills whose green out
lines are so familiar as inose of Mor wen
and Ben lomond 1 And how the ro
mantic light ever glinmurs over Knliiue
and lovely Loch Ael.i ay ! So happy is
the late of Scotland that even the peo

their renown, and the sympathy of hug

f irtunate. Wli.le her destiny is linked
with that of tho greatest empire of mod
ern times, Rhe still preserves her individ
uality, self respect and prosperity in the
union. In the great labors of England
in Europe, America, Africa, Australia
and Asia, in arts, commerce and conquest
she has, like Ireland, partaken ; but in
the fruits of those achievements, and in
the glory of them, she has not been made
like Ireland, an alien.
To this country Scotland will ever be
especially dear, since to her vve owe not
merely that gratitude for her achieve
ments in art and litetatnre, and that ho
mage for her example in many a good
cause, which the world owes, brit in ad
dition thanks for one of the best elements
in our own nationality. Elsewhere we
have shown what strong, determined, in
dependen men she gave the New World.
The record of their work speaks for
their worth, and in recounting the glo
ries of Saotlrnd, the gentlemen of St.
Andrew’s Society should not forget the
roll of Scottish Americans, including

AN EXCITIN J CHASE.
The Capture of a Polar Bear.
I he Norwich (Conn,) Bulletin recently
contained tire following:
The skin ot an immense Polar bear lias
been received by a gentleman in this city
by’the bark Nile, from a friend on the
bark Isabella, at Cumberland Inlet, with
the following account of its capture: “A
party ot men from the Issabella, includ
ing a number of Esquimaux aud myself,
were walking on the ice :i short dis'anee
from the ship, when, rounding a hum
mock, we unexpectedly discovered a
large bear quietly feeding. We would
have returned to the ship without ds
turbing it, as we were armed with only
one rifle and a few spears carried by the
natives, had not one of the several dogs
that were with us announced our pres
er.ee by a loud bark. The bear, as it saw
the intruders, began to advance slowly
toward us, but was met by the dog, who
attacked the animal vigorously’ but with
lttle effect. He shook them off and alter
injurig three of them so,liadly that they
bad to be killed continued to advance.
We discharged the rifle and then (Id to
the ship, where we armed ourselves and
came back to look after the bear, which
bad disappeared behind one ot the nu
merous hummock by which we were
surrounded. Wo had searched for some
time, when as£*one ot the Esquimaux
passed the coiner of a hummock ho came
faao to face with the infuriated animal,
lie gave a ferful cry just as the brute
struck him with one of his immense paws.
The rest of us heard the cry and rapidly
surrounded the brute, which stood per
fectly still ovei the body of the Esqui
iraux. We fired sixteen shots, twelve
of which eutcred bis body before bo re
c ivod his death wound. The i alive
was insensible when we picked him up
and badly torn about the shoulders by
the beast's claws, bat was not seriously
hurt. Wetbok the body of the bear on
a sledge to the ship ; it weighed 1,575
pounds, and was tsn feet from nose to
tail, and eight feel and four inches a
round the thickest pan of iis body.”
