A paper says the times are so bad, and

Why are traveling spiritualists like a

circulating mediums.
There is a good wide ditch between

f Don’t Scoix—for the saklfe? your
ehildren dont do it. It is a misfotune to
l ave children reared in the presence and
undet the influence of n scold. The elf* ct
ol the everlasting complaining and fan t
finding ot such persons is to make the
young who hear it un.imiable, malicious,
callous hearted, and they often learn to
take pleasure in doing the very things
lor which they received such tongue
lashings. As they arc always geltig the
blame ot wieng doing, whether they do
it or not, they think they might as well
do wrong ns right. They lose all ambi
tion to strive or the favorable opin'onof
the fault tinder, since they see they
always strive in vain. Thus is a scold
not only a nuisance, but a destroyer ol
tho iroicls o( ch’ilden. Il these unloved
dreaded people sowld only see themselves
as other aee them, they would flee to the
moun'ains in very shame.

THE SUN.
1 877. NEW YOKK, IH7J.
Tho difiei&it editions of the Sun during the
next year will be the same Bn dming the year
that has just passed. The daily edition will on
week days be a sheet of four pages, Bnd on
Sundays a sheet of eight pages, or 5(5 broad
eohinma ; while the weekly edition will he a
sheet of eight pages of the same dimensions
snd character that are already familiar to our
friends. I
Tho Sun will continue to be the stromioua
advocate of reform and retrenchment, and of
the substitution of statesmanship, wisdom, and
integrity for hollow pretence, imliecility, and
fraud in the administration of public affairs.
It will contend for the government of the peo
pie by the people and for the people, as op
posed to government by frauds in the ballot
box and in the counting of votes, enforced by
military violence. It will endeavor to supply
its refldors —a body now not tar far from a I
million of souls —with tho most careful, com
plete and trustworthy occounts of current
events, and will employ for this purposo a nil- |
merous and carefully selected staff of repor- |
tors and correspondents. Its reports from j
Washington, especially, will be full, accurate, ,
and fearless; and it will doubtless continue to !
deserve and enjoy tho hatred of those who j
thrive by plundering the Tr< jury or by usur
ping what the la w doe* not give them, while it
will endeavor to merit the confidence of the
public by defending the rights of the peoplo
against the encroachments of unjustified pow
er , Tho price of the daily Suu will be 55 cents a
month oi fit,so a year, post paid, or with the
Sunday edition #7.70 a year.
The Sunday edition alone, eight pages, $1,20
a yoar, post paid. . ,
Tho Weekly Sun, eight pages of *l> broad
columns, will be furnished during 1377 at the
rate of a year, post, pai 1.
The benefit of this large reduction from tho
previous rate for tho Weekly can bo enjored
hy individual subscribers without the necessity
of making up clubs. At the same tune, if any
of our friendß choose to aid in extending our
circulation, wo shall bo grateful to them, and
every such person who sends us ten or more
subscribers from one place will bo entitled to
one copy of the papor for himself without
charge. At one dollar a year, postage paid,
the expenses of paper and printing arc barely
repaid ; and considering tho size of the sheet
and the quality of its contents, we aie confi
