Robinson’s Great show.
[From LoaisvUle Conrier-Jonmat, Sept. 29, 187S.]
The big show of Old Reliable John Robin
son came into Lou sville, gave a two days’
exhibition and departed for the South. The
vast concern was heralded by an almost un
limited amount of advertising, and no prom
ise of the veteran manager was unfulfilled.
The managerie was filled with the rarest and
most expensive wild animals, while the
arenic display was suberb in every detail.
During both davs the audience was very
large and embraced the wealth, fashion and
beauty of our city. More brilliant audiences
we have rarely seen under canvas, and the
patronage tho great show received here was
well deserved. From here the entire compa
ny goes into the South, and we commen<!»it4 ”
to the people there as trill worthy of the onto-
fidence its reputation in past years has in
spired. But few shows have ever visited
Louisville that have given so much satisfac
tion in every respect. It is a strictly moral
circus in the sense that the entertainment
observed the bounds of the strictest proprie
ty. The show is certainly one Of the best in
the world, and only needs to be seen to be
admired. The well known reputation of the
manager was sufficient in Louisville to at
tract unusually large audiences beneath the
pavilion. Those who witnessed the arenic
performances, which were ju?t what the ad
vertisements of the concern promised, seemed
exceedingly well pleased, and remarked nu
memus high compliments of their m n"inl
excellency. The gymna-iie feats of A\iit-
ney anil Davenport, aeroirtts and tiapeze
erformers, were truly wonderful. Not less
so were those of pretty Mis- Jennie Tournour,
who held heradinirer.-aliuo9t spell-bound while
she -wuug to nml fro lii.-h a ove their heads
in a trapeze, balanced simply by her feet.
Another lady performer was .Miss Rosaline
Stickney, whose graceful equestrian acts and
leaps were very generally admired. Those
of Bob Stickney, too, ns well a- his remark
able jump-, tumbles and double somersaults
over two dozen horses, elh-iled tne applause'
of everybody within the hig lent. Stickney
is a remarkable leaper and very likelv as
good n9 there is in the world. A circus
without a clown is like n woman without a
tongue, and old Joliu Robinson would lie in
a kid straight indeed were he to lose
“ Lowlow," whoso jokes and jeers never do
other than amuse his nuilitors. Miss Emma
Lake, the equestrienne, El Nino Eddie, the
right rope perl'orra. r, Campbell, the tumbler,
Sloman, the I mil tosscr, aud all the oilier
performers, like the entire show, are full uf
sparkling peculiarities and excellencies well
worth seeing.
The wardrobe of the establishment is very
elegant. It is a rule with Mr Robinson to
require his performers to change their cos
tumes for new ones at least once in a quarter,
and the result is that they always appear in
glittering array. The orchestral music is
another enjoyable feature. There are no
wheezy reeds or hoarse trombones or soul-
harrowing cornets. Every instrument is in
good order and the players artists.
Lost, on Friday 10th, either on Prince
Avenue, Hull or Hancock streets, between
the residence of W. J. Morton, Esq., and
the Lucy Cobb Institute, a Coral Ear Ring,
with a small coral at'- top and a large one at
bottom, with a gold pendant underneath. A
suitable reward will be paid by leaving the
same with \V. J. Morton. decl4-lt.

CORRECTED FOR THE GEORGIAN
PITT HI*. MITCHELL & < 0.
The Opera.—Lecoq’s opera bouffe, last
night at Deuprees’ Hall, “Girofle-Girofla,”
was most enthusiastically renewed by an
overflowing house. The plot of this melo
drama though simple is touching, and the
music, though light is excellent. The differ
ent parts of the ontu|ianv are well sustained
and clustering around Miss Sallie Holman,
the beautiful prima donna in her role of
Girofle, they formed an exquisite mosaic of
harmony.- ’Brmnilisi’fl tenor is delightful
and Ryse’s baritone fine. The different songs
were splendidly render<tl. Miss Sallie Hoi-
man’s singing is, of con r.-e, charming, while
the voice of Miss Julia, the eontraltn. was as
so ft and «i noth as Persian satin." To
night, “La Fille de Mme. Angot” will draw
another crowded house. The well known
reputation of the Holmans demands no
further comments from u-.
