HOW the i,i:.\vks (A.m: uo»v>.
I’ll tell YOU how the leaves cvne down,
The great Tree to Me eiM • n wi'rt:
“You’re getting slerpy, Ye low and B own.
Ye*, very elcepy. hide Kc.t;
It i* quite time yon went to tied.
'•Ah!” hegged eaeh willy, pouting leaf,
•1 Let us a little longer stay;
Pear father Tree, behold nor grief,
’Tis such a very pleasant day
Wo do not want to go away.”
So. just for one more merry day
To the great Tree the leaflets clung,
Frolicked and danoed. and had their way,
Upon the Autumn freezes swung.
Wuiapering all their sjiorts among.
«• Perhaps the great Tree w ill forget
And let us stay until the Spring,
If we all beg, and coax, and Irct.
Hut tlie great tree did no such tiling;
lie smiled to hear their whispering.
"Come children, all to bedlie cried:
And ere the leaves could urge their prayer,
lie shook Ins head, and far and wide,
Fluttering and mailing everywhere,
Down sped the leaflets through the air.
1 saw them; on the ground they lay.
Golden and red, a huddled swarm.
Waiting till one from far an ay.
White bedclothes heaped upon her arm,
Should come to wrap them safe and warm.
The great hare Tree looked down and smiled;
» Good night, dear little leaves.” he said,
And from below each a’.eeny child
Replied, “ Good-night,’ an t murmured.
"If is so nice to go to bed.”

All this we admit, and yet eonteml that

When our hat and overcoat disappear

that sitting by the tire is the dernier resort
in the matter. Reason is not slow to sug

of the articles, iu order th t we may pro

replace them, and have something to say
about a eat eii bolt for the hall door. And
in respect to the subject under considera

at large, are stolen, why can we not confine
them to more limited areas and, with the
aid ot a thief-proof pen or h u.-c, still con

as a range with peas, chufas, artichokes, Ac., |
and pasturing the same with the aid of a
movable fence, cheap food can be provided
for the hogs until the season arrives for
corn feeding. In addition to this source
of food theie should be, on every f.rni, a
large boiler and furnace, or steamer, if
means will justify, which, by virtue of its
necessity to the milch cows, should not In-

the hogs will derive benefit from during
the winter, when turnips are in season, ai
which, when boiled, may be g ven at the
close of day, to one urage the.u to return
t.. their lodgings under lock an I key Tin y
They can soon he trained to come t»their
pen at ni^ht-lail by throwing them a little
corn. And now, to come to the most im
portant part, it should be the object of
farmers, raising hogs under such cir. um-
stances, to so improve their stoc , by a se
lection and crossing with the Berkshire., or
other improved breeds on select' d native
stock, that, instead of requiring a dozen to
HH|>|ily 25 bundled pounds of bacon, four
or five will do it.
In starting out, 1 u*. few .armors would
be able, or, at ai y rate, feel able, to pur
chase alone a fine boar. The best way to se
cure one, therefore, would be to get up a
club of lour, five, of more in ighbortng
farmers and purchase one, to he held as the
common property of the club and for the
use of its members alone. His services
might be sold to outsideis for sufficient t«
maintain him, and perhaps pay back the
original cost besides. Of course, to secure
high improvement in the stock, it will be
necessary to import a new one to run with
the progeny of the previous one. If a
number of clubs for such a purpose existed
in a county, animals might lie exchanged
among them tbc second year to mutual ad
vantage, As we are not capable of exhaust
ing this important subject, we leave i - , with
the hope that abler pens will take it up and
press upon our fanners the necessity of re
viving the good old days of spare-ribs, 1 lack-
bones, pig leet, souse, sausage, better living
and more independence. V.
