occurred in the Newton House, where
aroused the blazing fire of mine host Cli-
nard’8 hearth these vend guests of the hotel
and these masters of transportation had
gathered to enjoy a social chat. Here the
smiling lac.- of the proprietor beamed upon
his little knot of friends, there the placid
countenances of McGuire and Jenkins were
ever and anon revealed behind the curling
wreathes of flagrant havannas, here the
kind physiogomy of Judge Nicholson vied
with the vivid fagots upon the hearthstone
in scattering light and cheerfulness in every
direction, while on each side of the mantle
the two disputants with lanterns in hand
scowled behind their thick nlst, rs in mu
tual envy and ready rivalry
“Yes I did haul 1700 lbs offreight to the
depot for 25 cents, and if yon say, Mr.
Conley, that you didn't try to do the
same thing you are a liar.”
“See here Dyke don’t call me a liar.”
“Well if you said that, yon arc a liar,
and if you’ll step out here I’ll give you sat
isfaction.”
The two parties then moved out, and
upon arriving at the street door Connoly
caught hold of the door to go out of the
hall, when Dyke whacked out his pocket
knife, and inflicted a very ugly wonnd
under Connoly’s right eye. The latter
.hen rau back mto the Hotel office, seized
the tongues and as his adversary came up
led him with a blow on the forehead.
from this, Conley again

Charlie Cooper, who up to this time, had
endeavored to conciliate the parties,, now
rustled up and helped the cause considera
bly by striking Conley over the head with
chair, who turning around soon dis
posed of this doughty assailant; and here
the affair terminated. The trial before the
Mayors Court which came off Tuesday af
ternoon developed substantially the facts
given above. The room was crowded with
spectators and when the caso was called,
Mr.Dykc representing himself proroptl said
“ready.” lie had no counsel but gave the
prosecuting attorney to understand that hc
as as good a lawyer as any of them. His
cross examinations of the States’ witnesses

is edicts are stvlish and business like,
apt. Mitchell will conduct the general
r,leery business, as carried on by the late

ANkw Minister.—We understand that
|v. C. 1). Campbell, at present of Quitman
P-. has I,een called to the Baptist Church
I our city. This gentleman, comparatively
| young man, is said to be a minister of great
Vomise; eminently capacitated by his exnl-
M Christian character, intellectual and ora-
hrical abilities for his high profession, and
unquestionably give general satisfaction
i his new field of labor. He graduated at
IliTcer University, then at Pcnfield Ga., a
hort time before the war, after taking quite
prominent stand in his classes. In all
Itoliahilitv he will be in Athens next Satur-

Phi*Kappa Anniversary.—And a good
crowd indeed-attended. The weather was
good, tiujumusic better andbeauty smiled her
sweetest but there wash’t enough of- it, and.
that’s what’s the matter.
We were fascinated,-bewildered, complete-,
ly dazzled by the imposing physique and
scintillating uniform of Capt. J. U. Jackson,
as proudly exhibiting his flashing array of bat
tons and braid in front o. all eyes; and yet
the P. K’s made the gallant Captain “toat”
their banner.
What does it raeauT Our friend Qanahl
tvore upon the lappel of his coat an immense
porcelain breastpin, as large as a saucer, upon
which was enameled a simpering cupid en

tastes. The next thing perhaps in that line
wil! be a shingle.

Our equanimity was restored just-in time
to see the two. societies emerge from their
respective halls, the Phi-Kappas headed by
Capt. G. D. Thomas, and the Demosthe-
nian by Lieut. J. P. McLaws, his customa
ry toothpick occupying its usual place, while
he looked the very personification of Gen.
Browne’s definition of “Sovereignty.’
H. H. Tucker, the orator of the day,
haudled his subject, “The Sea a Civilizer,”
in a masterly manner, exhibiting a rare logi
cal power and a depth of reading remarka
ble for so young a roan. His address was
received with vociferous applause and at its
conclusion the Phi-Kappas adjourned to their
hall to hear their private anDiversariau, Mr.
Floyd. Many Alumnas and Honorary mem
bers were present and enjoyed quite a pleas
ant reunion. We learn that some one to
day accosted Rev. Mr. Ilallam in mistake
for Prof. Cumming, another, instance of .the
coincidence'of science and religion—in 'this
case they were so closely identified and blend
ed as to be indistinguishable!
The Air ave Breathe.—Quite a large
and brilliant audience filled the lecture
room of “Moore College” last Friday even
ing to bear the lecture of Prof. Harry C.
White, upon the “Chemistry of the Atmos
phere.” Illustratinghis discourse by care
ful and interesting experiments, Prof
White, developed step by step the gases
composing our atmosplie-e, and deduced
before tlie eyes of tlie audience the various
properties,.physical gild chemical, cf Oxy
gen, Hydrogen, Nitrogon, Carbonic Acid
Gas, Nitric acid aud Ammonia.
Tlie relative quantities of Oxygen and
Nitrogen were shown, the manner of their
diffusion, and the fact that the atmosphere
was a mechanical mixture, not a chemical
compound, most conclusively demonstrated.

sir? Not a single thing. There is not a
shadow of evidence to show that I cut Mr.

Now sir, Mr. Conley is a poor man and so
