THIRl'TF. OF RESPECT.
Athens, Marclt 16,1S76.
meeting of the Athens Baptist
Doubtless there are others in the commu
nity who were sincere in their belief, that
such a thing would be attempted, but n
most instances I fear, opposition to the
Northeastern Road itsell Im-heen at the bot
tom of the hue and cry on the subject.
With the success of our Road now, an ac
complished fact as an Independent enter
prise it was hoped that this form of opposi
tion always so groundless, had ceased forev
er, hut as it has not, it is necessary that the
charge should be met by a flat denial. The
directors of the Road, have never made an
overture to the Georgia Road looking to
•“uch n thing, or have they ever entertained
the must distant idea of doing so. I sup-
|)ose l may without impropriety slate that at
a recent meeting of ihe Directors, the subject
of these rumors was alluded to, and cnch
member pres lit expressed himself unopposed
to consolidation with the Georgia Road, un
der any circumstances.
There is nothing to invite such a step. Our
interest, and our most favorable connections
nr<* in another direction.
There wa-n time indeed, before the organi
sation of the Ni rtheastern Com pan v, when
Athens and Northeast Georgia called on the
Georgia Road for assistance in buildinft our
Road. We thought it would Ire mutually
advantageous to them, to ns, and to Augusta.
The diy goods, hardware, and grocery
trade, and the cotton business ftotn this
section all went to Augusta. Twelve or
fifteen counties of Northeast Georgia, and
some of the western counties of North
Carol iia, did all their business there, and
would liuveeuutinucd to do so. Theainm.nt
of this trade and cotton business, would not
fall fin- short of a ini lion of dollars annually.
Our business arrangements were all with
Augusta, and it was both our interest and
inciii iitiou to continue them, but the wise
managers of the Georgia Road thought it
better to indorse the bonds of the Port
Royal Road than to aid the Northeastern.
I do not complain i f this action. I am not
a stockholder iu the Georgia Road and
have no right to arraign its inanageme: t—
nor can I see that this section has any just
cause of complaint at the aid given the
Port Royal Road, since it worked greatly
to our advantage by giving it another and
shorter outlet to the sea.
The stockholders of the Georgia Road
may not, in view of resnl s, think that it
has been a very• profitable operation to
them, and Augusta, when she reflects on
the heavy trade that has left her forever,
upon the ruinous depreciation nf her real
estate, upon the loss of business by her
commission and other merchants, and upon
the fact that three-fourths of the cotton
now goes to Savnnnah, may well doubt
whether the Pint Royal enterprise has not
been disastrous to her interests, and whether
a golden opportunity was not missed when
the Georgia 'Road declined to come to our
assist ancy.
But it is useless to speak of this, for it is
too late to change or remedy it now. The
Nort heastern Road will soon he completed,
and its connections will be most satisfactory.
We shorten the time and distance very
considerably to Atlanta and the Wes', anil
will be twelve hours nearer to New Yor .
and the East. It is a home enterprise, and
will be maintained as an independent roa ..
