Fire Engine in Cobhham.
There is something very secure and sat
isfactory when a mau’s house is on fire, to
know that there is a fire engine around.
It .makes no difference what kind of a ma«*
chine that is. It may be a dilapidated reel
with just 10 feet of hose, it may be a super
annuated truck with a step ladder and a
pot hook, it may be a garden engine with
a bucket of water; it doesn’t make so much
difference, after all, if there’s a fire engine
and a crowd on the ground, and yon have
plenty of sympathizing triends around with
an apj aratus making some show of check
ing the flames. Whether a mail rushes into
your house and hacks away on the door
step with an ux or tramps over your best
carpet and offers violence to your new furni
ture, it makes no matter at the time, your
home is on fire and you applaud any effort
which has a show of helping you in your
house warming. But where a fellow, re

the living waters of salvation. And yet,
brothers and sisters, there remains much

temperance in our hearts everywhere we

us clasp each other’s hand, and pray to
God that he will guide us. Then, with His

appear. Let us determine never to allow

we all have a duty to perform.

older brethren, to whom we so often find
it necessary to look to for counsel and ad

1 is pleasant to think that throughout our
liiva l land, many such memorials as the
1 caiitiml monument on College Avenue,
by the offerings of love, express
an.l attest our purpose to remember the
nf i>ami the days whicli are past; but even
, potently than those silent monuments,
,l,i these annual gatherings say, “We-will

them—the fame of heroes and ilic gratitude
i f their countrymen ; whicli fame we will
I ci-pet nato as long as breath is left us, and
vhieli gratitude wo will bequeath to our
1 .Kterity as their reasonable service.” We
would revive those memories in order to
cae airage tic unfolding of that gratitude,
and to excite others to imitate the examples
if incorruptible integrity and patriotism
which are so abundant among those names
we call our own.
11 society, constructed as ours is—in a
government of the people, influences ope
rate in two opposite directions; from the
lmrer classes upward, ’till the highest is
reached, and again, from llio highest to
tlie lowest. This action is reciprocal, ami
i-i a necessary and unavoidable concomitant
tl'tlie structure of society and the govern
ment. With this fact before us, it becomes
at mice apparent that the great and good
men, whose names give peculiar lustre to
that period of our history which we this
d iv call to mind, were but the results of
the influences, which made them what
they were—the very best specimens ot
many who were inferior only in the degree
oi perfection attained and in the polish
which was put upon their excellencies. In
-lie classes from which they rose and among
whom they once ranked as equals, might be
found the elementary virtues which attained
matnr.ty in these leaders. If Gen. Lee was
the greatest Commander and the purest
patriot of modern times, let it not bo lor
gotten that his lofty heroism and purity
had many likenesses, less fully developed,
in the less conspicuous lives of the subordi
nates whom he commanded. If naught but
matchless skill, and almost uniform success,
could have inspired one of his Lieutenant-
Generals to say, “ Gen. Lee is the only man
living whom I would follow blindfolded,’’
let it be remembered that naught but pure
devotion and courage could have tempted
Mteli a remark—virtues only, if at all, less
admirable than the qualities which elicited
the com endation. Gen. Lee was truly,
the great and good man lie is everywhere
represented to be, and oil no occasion ot
Ins life did that greatness appear more con
spicuous, than when lie silently surrendered
Ins T.Uot) ragamuffin hero s at Appamatox.
Every one of those 7,000 men shared in
the grandeur of that hour by the readiness
witii which lie acquiesced in that result,
which he was equally ready still to com
bat. at the command of him whom thoy had
been accustomed to obey. Such confidence
did he inspi e—such as only such men as
he had command ot, were able to give; he
evoked such heroism as only such veterans
were capable of displaying; ho directed,
with matchless skill, such courage as only
such warriors were capable of feeling.
An ancient proverb says, “ It is better to
t» have an army of stags led by a
lion, than an army of lions led by a stag ’’
But a lion at the head of such an army,
could never convert it into au aimy of
lions. lb> might inspire somo courage and
urous - s nne daring among such followers,
hut only at the head of an army of lieus,
could lie a 'liievo his greatest success. An
army of lions led by a lion, could accom-
plish everything that courage .night find
l M,s 'ible. And this wo have exemplified in
that handful of Confederates, for truly it
was an army of lions led by a lion. While
we honor him who is tlie Chief amoug
m, let us not withhold from them that
praise whicli is due them for giving such
81, |>port t him as only such n leader de
served, and such as only, such followers
were able to give.
Liberty is a priceless boon. Tho blood
that has been so lavishly shed for it, is not
*oo dear a price. But even liberty is not the
most valuable boon a nation may possess.
Freedom with honor, an independent na-
tionality with an unstained escutcheon, this
ls the grandest possession possible for a
people. But a froo government, an inde-
pendent nationality with a prostitute Exec-
otive, a corrupt Judiciary, and a venal
Legislature is a valueless possession—free,
out impure; independent, but mercenary.
Even bondage and dependency, subjuga-
J'on and slavery, hard as they are to oe
borne, are, with honor and integrity, pre
ferable to freedom with corruption. The
men whom we this day honor, did not
achieve for us the independence at which
Biey aimed; buf they left us that which
ameliorates our humiliation, and commands
toe respect of tho world—-they left ns the
priceless possession of an untarnished fame.

sits upon a hill, is necessarily cut off from
speedy relief in time of fire until the down
town department can arrive, and very often
before this succour can possible reach the
spot ot conflagration, why, some fine proper
ty is destroyed.
* It’s no small matter to run from either
of our city engine houses to Cobbhatn, os
any of our galant fireman can testify, and
we think that an engiue located at
some convenient or central point in that
settlement, could very efficaciously utilize
the many cisterns in cases of fire. We are
