Llewellyn Dearing, E-q.. so the story goes,
went down the Georgia Road, his first time,
last Tuesday, with quite a bevy of boys and
girls. Lloiv did very well until lie got ahout
27 miles this side of Augusta, when, as the
train approaching a station slackened up.
the brnkemnn. sticking his burly form in the !

When the train reached Crawford, en

of the E ho, Murphy, Ac., but no one re*

Murphy was not at home, as he was ob
served the throwing day otj a back street
in Augusta, his coat and hat piled on the
pavement, one limit gone and two suspender
buttons off, engaged in an animated conver

induce it to advertise in the Echo Such
commendable energy merits success.
Not much excitement occurred at the

Moody left on Tuesday, ami we were un

least. It would not do for u*, however, to
express such heretical sentiments here, as
Augusta is completely infatuated over
Moody, and every one is as mad as a March
hare on the subject. They can speak ot
nothing but “the great revivalist,” and
deem him, in very truth, a deini god.

man of delicate physical utruvturo, ins constitution was
»lu.tiered by the exposures incident to a soldier's life,
and about three Years ngo his health begau to decline,
until at last he yielded to I lie Dower of that invincible
• lestroyer, Death. He joined the Baptist church in
Atuens when in his sixteenth vear, aud was baptized
by Iiev. L. K. L. Jonuings, uuu through life was u true
and consistent Christian, and his death was a triumph
ant illustration of the truth of thc c iristiau faith.
The incidents distinguishing Mr. Whitman’s last
lays ou earth and his beautiful and pe leeful death, arc
worthy of note and re embraucc. Such remark able
fiith, siicu dying grace, and such a bright and lovely
evidence of the saint's perfect rest in heaven, lms
scarcely a parallel. Could ull that he said and thought
«nd dul, in those last hours, be fully known Christians
would undoubtedly experience a holv eestacy and gain
and glory in a firmer faith in Christ's love and saving
grace—while he, the sainted one, who is now with the
pure in heaveu, would be remembered with feelings ol
wonder and joy, aud his name be placed on record
with the num -sof the eminent dead—u blessed me-
iiiento of God’s di\*iue love and tender mercy ami pow
er to save those who trust in Him.
For several weeks before his death and up to thc last
.tours of his mortal existence, Mr. W hitman’s conver
sations with his loviug wife aud three dear little daugh
ters, h s aged mother, bntaers, sister*, visitors and
r.cnds, were so remarkably beautiful and spiritual that
11 were impressed, strengthened and comforted, even
when hidniug him farewell. His sufferings at times
were Very great, and he would often ask, “ Oil, do 1
couip aiu aud murmur too much on account of my ex
treme suffering—if so, tell nw. I cannot War to soriuk
.’rum aught my Heavenly Father sends. I am willing
to Duller just as he wills. 1 have been a sinner and
lave not ful.owed my master closely, but Jesus and 1
nave made that uil right, and 1 now*feel tiiut 1 will be
at rest.” “On, street, sweet rest,” he murmured an
other time, with a l.oty joy lightening up his face _
several low voices, at Ins request, chanted for him that
liviue melody, ••Best for the Weary.” Ami at anoth
er time, when in an agony tit pain, lie prayed earnestly,
.fter the manner of our Saviour, ** Oh, my Father, if it
be possible let this cup pass from me; nevertheless,

such a holy resignation |K>>sessed him at times, when
tut sc severe paroxysms came on, that lie seemed al-
most transfigured m appvurunce. He often exhorted
his loved one* to cling to Jesus, ofteu exclaiming,
1 ** Oh, had 1 my life to live over, it should be mv
sion to warn sinners from the wrath to come. I uow
•eel that i have not done my duty’ sufiicieutly, but
pray Go t forgive my erring, backward nature.” II
seemed willing anti anxious to go. Never was there a
noineut in tue hist several weeks of his existence that
.o seemed to desire io l.ve longer ou the earth ; only
til occasional sadness seized him when speaking of his ,
•oVed and faithful wile and helpless little children. I
These little ones he otteu desired to be brought to his
bed-side, and lovingly and tenderly talked to them of
the time when they would see liim no more, aud of
the r duty to «ac.» other and their mother. Taking his
owu mother’s hand one day he said, 44 Mother, do not
Wt«p lor me, 1 shall soon be nt rest, aud yon will ere
long meet me there. 1 do not wish any of you to grieve
A few moments before his death, at mid-day on a
gol.ieu Sabbath, hcojiencd his eyes aud smilling sweet
ly on all ot thc friends standing around him, lie said,
•* How bright and shilling you all look. Dear, kind,
precious friends, and my beloved ones, good-bye,” and
inclining his head to them, he murmured again* “Good
bye—goo*.-bye.” Ue lay for a few momeuta in alienee
and Uu u again said, 4 ‘ 1 see the river of death—on the
other bright aud shining shore stand my father and
my two sisters, sainted forms, smiling and beckoning
me away. On, now joyous are they over my coming!”
These were his last words.
Ills funeral sennou was preached by Rev. J. G. Lane,
