NVe don't believe there is. It has been often tried
by rival bouses. But when they endeavor to check the
swelling flom of musical poods from the Augusta Music
House in rcsponce to the myriads of orders coming in
from all over the South, at such low prices; they may
as well try dam up the tides of ocean rolling after

lie would l>e troubled this summer and we were correct.
For now while his neighbors arc lounging around or

he is kept confined to his store filling orders. And wc

Dr. II. H. Carlton,
Editor of Athens Georgian:
Dear Sir :
I have received in the past two weeks,
commnications from individual citizens of
nine counties of the 9th Congressional
District, requesting me to allow my name
to go before the Democratic Convention,
called to nominate a candidate for Congress.
Professional engagements have allowed me
to acknowledge receipt of hut few of those
communications, I therefore respectfully
ask leave to make a general reply through
your columns.
I appreciate very highly the compliment
paid me, the more highly because it was
entirely unexpected. I regard it as not
only the right but ihc duty of the people
to choose tlieir representatives without re
yard to the wishes or desites of aspirants.
Under no circumstances would I engage
in tlic “scramble” for office, which is the
disgrace of tlic day, or .eek to influence
the selection of delegates to the Convention;
but should the people of the 9th district,
through the Convention, indicate tiiat I
am their choice for Representative in Con
gross, I could not be insensible to such an
honor, and would accept the nomination.
Respectfully yours &c.,
J. A. Billups.

Too Extended a Corporation.
There is nothing neeffing the attention of
the people of Athens more at this time, than
the extent of our corporate limits. Iti the
first place, there is no good sense, reason or
fairness, in having onr corporation to ex
tend two miles in every direction from the
College Chapel, thus taking into our city'
limits much of the surrounding country
which is used solely for Agricultural pur
poses. Again, tho corporate limits of
Athens, owing to the peculiar shape of that
portion of the town which has been built
tip, cannot be justly or fairly detemf ned
by a two mile radius, from any given point
as a center. The College Chapel certainly
is not he center.
This defect in onr city bonndrnry, since
it is working great injustice to many of our
agricultural citizens living within the sub
urbs, at well as imposing an unjust tax npon
onr whole people to keep np this unneces
sary extent of territory, should nt once re
ceive the attention of our whole people,
and if needs be to brill”-qibqat thc necessary
reform, should be made a question in our
next municipal election. Sixty-five miles of
streets tojkeep up, is entirely too much for
a pla m ‘ with the population of Athens.
Reform in this part of our city arrange
ments is certainly needed, and by all that
is just and fair to our tax-payers, let it be
brought about. kTvRf'~
