HOW HE GOT THE BANK I

TUB STORY OF A.BANK ROBBERY THAT
DIDN’T COME BY TELEGRAPH.
A few days ago about dust a stran
ger called at the residence of a bank
cashier in St. Louis, and introducing
himself, said he desired some private
conversation on business of impor
tance. The cashier thereupon led
him to a private room, gave order
that that they were not to be dis*
turbed, seated himself, folded his ears,
and desired his mysterious acquaint
ance to communicate the subject of
his visit. The man coughed once or
twice, then said:
“ Being the cashier of this here
financial institution, of course you
keep the key of the safe
The cashier said he did.
“And you know about the bank
robbers that go round and tie and
gag cashier and their families, and

“And you’ve heard about

The cashier said he had.
“ Now,” said the stranger, “ I’ve
been studying up the whole business,
and I’ve found out how to overcome
them.”
“ You don’t say so.”
“Yes,sir. For §5 I will impart
to you a secret which may at some
future time save your life and the
funds entrusted to your care. I will
show you how to untie any series of
knots, never complicated; to remove
a gag from your mouth, and, in fact,
to set yourself free. I can release
myself in 2:14 1-2, and with a week’s
practice I’ll bet that you can show
better tbau three minutes. You
the advantage of my system ? There
is no need to resist and get shot; all
you have to do is to let them
tic you up, and, as soon as they’ve
taken the key and gone, why you
just let yourself loose and give the
alarm.”
The cashier said it was a remarable
invention.
“ You bet is,” is said the inventor,
“ and as I never take any money for
itYill my customers are satisfied with
ray honesty in dealing with them,'
l’Htell you what "I’ll do. Just let
me gag and bind you then I’ll give
you simple, directions what to do,
and if you don’t unloose yourself in
live minutes and express your entire
satisfaction at the process, I’ll give
you §10. If you find that I am a
man of my word,'you’ll payme$5.’>
The cashier said that nothing could
he fairer.
“ Another thing,’’ continued the
visitor, “ I’m a poor mail, and this
secret is my only stock in trade, so
I’ll ask you not to teachJany one else
how to do it, for that would spoil my
business.”
The cashier consented to the ar
rangement.
“Take this 810 bill,’’ said the other,
“ If I fail you keep it; if you are sat*
. isfied, you will return it to me with
another 85. And now this is how
we do it.” So saying, he took a roll
of cord and gag from his pockets,
and with great dexterity tied that
cashier hand and foot, and gagged
him so that he could not wink,
“ Now you arc tied pretty firmly,
ain’t you? You wouldn’t think you
could ever get loose, would you ?”
The cashier looked the replies lie
could not speak.
“ I don’t think you could myself,”
said the inventor ; “ and now let me
tell you my name is Jesse H. James,
the notorious .train robber, "find if
you don’t fork over that key in three
seconds I’ll cut you throat from ear to
ear. I beg your pardon ; yon can’t,
but I’ll take it myself. It’s no trou
ble,” and, turning that cashier over
on his back like a turtle, he took the
key. “I won’t take your pocket*
book,” lie said, “for the $10 is yours,’
as I don’t think you will be able to
get loose in five minutes, or five
hours,; cither. So*long, sonny,” and
with a courteous bow, lie quitted
the apartment,.and proceeded to the
bank, which he rilled as completely
and leisurely as if ho had been one
of the directors. The sad event has
cast a gloom over that community.-—

effusion of a lady who was engaged
to a deck hand on a propeller that
ran between Detroit and Buffalo.
He wasn’t on the sea any of the time

•' half'seas,” and finally saw a girl up
at Dunkirk that he liked better, and
the poetess went and married a ferry,
boat wheelsman.
C LARKE MORTGAGE SHERIFF SALE.—
Will be told before tbe Court House door iu
tbe City ot Athens, Clarke conntv, Ga, on the
first Tuesday iu October next, within the legal
hours of sale tbe following property, to wit: all
that parcel of land whereon Richard Wilson
lived and died, containing three ituudred and
forty-six acres, more or less and made up of
tract bought, of Janies Shannon containing
eighty acres, more or less, the deed of which
bears date May the 22, 1850, and the tract
bought of Davnl Congor containing two hun
dred and eighty-eight acres, more or less, of
which bears date January 2, 1839, except 22
acres, mere or less, sold to Dr. Henry Hull and
which being deducted from 288, leaves of this
tract 266 acres, which being added to 80 acres,
makes the said 346 acres aforesaid. All levied
upon by virtue of a mortgage fi. fa. from
Clarke Snverior Court, August Term, 1870.

E XECUTOR’S SALE—By virtue of an order
of the Court of Ordinary of Clarke couuty,
and in pursuance of the last will and testament
of Mrs. S. S. Hamilton, deceased, will bo sold
before the Court-house door of said county, on
the first Tuesday of Novembei_next, during the
legal hours of sale, the following lots or parcels
of laud: One lot lying iu Athens, bounded on
the west, by Milledgc Avenue; north, by street
separating from Col. Ben C. Yancey’s residence;
east, by street separating from K. I- Bloom

thirteenth day of April, eighteen hundred
and Jsixty-uine, the said Francis M. Cranford
made aud delivered to Isaac M. Kenney, os

if any lie can, aud that on failure of said Francis
M. so to do, the equity of redemption iu and to
said mortgaged premises, be forever thereafter
bound and foreclosed.
And it is further ordered that this Rule be
published in The Athens Georgian once a
mouth for four months, or a copy thereof served
on the said Francis AL, his special agent or
attorney, at least three mouths before the next
term of this Court.

It appearing to the Court by the petition
of C. H. Phinizy & Co., that on the twenty-
fourth day of February, in the ’year eighteen
hnudred and seventy-five, tho defendant,
William Murray, of said county, made and de
livered to the petitioners, C. II. Phipizy & Co.,
his promissory note, bearing date tbe day and
year aforesaid, whereby the saidldefendant pro
mised to pay to order of C. H. Phinizy & Com
pany, one day after date thereof, twelve thousand
two hundred and forty-eight dollars and ninety-
eight cents, value received, and'if not paid at
maturity, to bear twelve per cent, interest until
paid, and all lawyers’ fees and cost* that may
be in enrred in collecting the same, signed with
his hand aud scaled with bis seal, by his lawful
attorney in fact, John F. Murray; and that after
wards, on the tenth day of .March, in the year
one thousand eight hundred and seventy-five,
the defendant, to secure the payment of said
note, executed and delivered to your petit
ioners his deed ot mortgage, whereby ho con

a straight line on the High Shoals road to a

said road back tc tho starting point, W. II.
Booth’s lot, in the town of Watkinsville. Said
tract contains five hundred and thirty acres
more or less. Also, the Broughton tract, con
taining seventy-five acres more or less, bounded
as follows: On the north, by Oconee River;
on the cast, by Simonton's line; on tho south,
by Frank Carter’s line; on the west, by W. Y.
Elder’s line. Also, the Epps’ tract; com
mencing at Chestnut corner, on the old Athens
road, following said road, running between II.
C. Durham and 'William Murray to J. S. Robin
son’s line; then along said Robinson’s line to
Gordon’s comer, then along Edward Gordou’s
lino to William Brewer’s comer, then along
Brewer’s liue to Harris, Murray and Durham’s
comer, then along Durham’s line back to
Chestnut comer, on the old Athens road. Said
tract contains two hundred and fifty acres more
or less. Also, tho Iiopkiu’s true:; lying between
the Hog Mountain road uud the road leading
to Snow’s Bridge and on to Monroe, joining
the tract known as the Reuben Hamilton place
on tho east, Griffith and Viucent on the uorth
and west, and the old Moore place and W. A.
Thornton on the south. Said tract of land
contains one hundred end fifty acres more or less

if the said William Murray shonld well and
truly pay, or cause to be paid to said C. II.
Phinizy and Company, or their heirs and as
signees, the sum of money named in said notes
aforesaid, according to its teuor and effect, then
said deed of mortgage and said note should
be void; and that afterwards, to-wit: on the
twentieth dav of August, in the year eighteen
hundred and seventy-five, the better to secure
tbe payment of said note, the said defendant
made and delivered to petitioners his certain
other deed of mortgago, whereby he conveyed
to petitioners his store-house, and lot upon
which suid store-house is situated, contaiuing
one-half acre more or less. Said property situate
undlbcing on the west side of the Piiblic Square,
in the town of Watkinsville, in Oeoucc county,
Georgia, being tbe store-house then and form
erly occupied by William Murray, also con
ditioned that if tliesaid William Murray should
well aud truly pay tojpetititioncrs the said sum
of money in said note specified, then tho said
deed of mortgage and the note should be void.
Aud it further appearing that said note remains
unpaid, it is therefore ordered that the said
William Murray, the defendant, do pay into
this Court, by tho first day of the next term
