A Millionaire’s Death-Bed.
The scene at the death-bed of Mr.
Lick, the California Croesus, is des
cribed by the San Francisco papers
as peculiarly impressive. He died in
his rooms at the Lick House, where
much of the work of apportioning out
his great charities had been done.
The bed on which he lay was sur.
rounded by tables, upon which were
numberless papers relating to bis
beneficences, and upon the counter
pane laid a large, open-face gold
watch, while among, the contents of
the room were a large Iudia-ink front
elevation of the proposed Pioneer
Hall, and a colored drawing of a pro

His Honor and Btfah.
“ I have heard,” began his honor as
he paid the boy for ten cents worth
of Snow apples, (( that there is a cer
tain person connected with this court
whose vote can be bought for two
dollars.”
The clerk indulged in a quiet grin.
The sergeant was reading the pa
per, and didn’t seem to hear.
Bijah gave a sudden start and
called out,
“ Name that man! If there’s any
such person aronnd here I • want to
know it !’*
44 What I have heard, I’ve heard,’’
replied the court.
' 44 If that means me,” continued
Bijah, bristling up still more, “ I want
to see the hyena who told you so!
I want to meet him in some quiet
country late and gather him in for an
au umn leaf! Who is he, and where
can I find him ?”
A POLITICIAN.
Thurlow Weed Brown couldn’t get
a fair look at his Honor, owing to the
fact that sojne one had pounded his
eyes and nearly broken his nose.
“ Nice looking prisoner yon are!’’
sneered the court. “ What party do
you belong to ?”
44 The innocent party,’’ replied the
prisoner.
“ Oh, yes, very innocent—wasn’t
doing nothing —feller hit you with a
paving stone, and so forth. I expect
you had a political discussion, didn’t
you ?’’
“ Well, yes. I was counting the
torchlights last night, when a great
big giant came up, and wanted to
know how many I made. I told him
1,200 when he said: 4 You are a
liar, there’s 28,000 hundred. Then
we had a row.
44 What did you have a row
about
4 * About bis calling me a liar.”
“ Suppose he called you ten liars.
Why didn’t you walk right away, and
not mind him ?”
44 1 can’t be called a liar, and not
defend myself.’’
44 You can’t eh. Well, sir, you will
have to stand it.
44 It’s hard, Judge, said the pris*»
oner.
44 If I let you off, I want you to
keep away from torchlight process
ions. I want you to stop howling
over Ohio, or yelling about Indiana-

Some kind hearts had also thought
to place fresh flowers on a side-table,
close to the dying man’s bed. On
Saturday morning, September 30th,
the first significant signs of the ap
proaching dissolution manifested
themselves. Thin, weak and cadav
erous, as the face had heretofore ap
peared, it now assumed a new ap
pearance, and the mind began to fail.
At times be could express some re
quest to bis nurse for assistance, but
even in this he at last became inco
herent, aud his desires had to be
guessed at. For some years past Mr.
Lick had been in declining health,
though of sound mind; and the last
three years, though confiued to his
room, nearly all the time he devoted
to arrangements for thfe disposal of
his immense estate. The last time
he left his bed was on the fourth of
July, when, assisted by his nurse, he
was able to reach the window and
wave his hand in response to the
cheers given in his liouor by the Pi
oneers who were marching in the pro
cession beneath. The cause of Mr.
Lick’s death was the natural decay of
all his physical faculties, caused by
old age, and was as peaceful aud
painless a dissolution as is often wit
nessed.

Quintessence of Meanness.—For
a man who has a largo city corre
spondence, and has constitutional ob
jections to paying out his coin to the
Federal Government, the following
branch of business is picayunishly
profitable: Advertise for a clerk in
some daily'paper, state that the sala
ry is $80 per month, and wind up
with “ inclose stamp.” A benevolent
looking old party, with “ specks” on
the bridge of his nose, has adopted
that method, and on the 1st. secured
150 stamps and no one knows how
many the next day. He thus receives
good interest on his 50 cent, invest*
ment, aud the poor clerks have to
pay it. If there is a meaner man in,
the city, ,let iiim, show up.—San.
