A MAIDEN’S REMORSE.
A Young Girl Haunted by the
Ghost of a Dead Hi-val—A.
Mysterious Case.
A correspondent writes from Fos
ter’s Crossing, Ohio, to the Cincin-.
nati Gazette: A young lady who
resides at the Crossing, went to ser-

with a family that resides near Mon*
roe, Butler county. Sho was a pret
ty, attractive girl, and soon became a
favorite with the young folks in the
neighborhood. A young man, named
Charles Edgar, became greatly enam
ored of Minnie, and desired to pro
pose marriage to her, but he had al
ready made a marriage engagement
with a reputable young woman in
thht viciuity, named Rosa Sinead, and
he was in great trouble about it. Not
long after Minnie’s advent in the
neighborhood, Rosa Smead was sud
denly taken ill, and died within a
few hours after 6he went to bed. The
physician said she died from poison.
The event created a good deal of
excitement in that settlement for a
time, but it soon died out.

Minnie
became an object of unpleasant re
marks in connection with the death
of Rosa, and she suddenly returned
home in the vicinity of the Crossing.
Edgar, whose couduct in regard to
the poisoning case elicited unfavora- j
ble comment, also disappeared from
the neighborhood of Munroe; and
Minnie, although she had reason to
believe he would come to sec her at
her home, has never seen him since
he disappeared from Monroe.
Recently, Minnie has been “ out of
her head” at times, and she has de
ported herself very strangely. For
instance, at times she acts like a lu
natic, and when in those “ spells”
she asserts that Edgar loved her
madly, but declared ho could not
wed her unless Rosa Smead was
dead. Then Miunie suggested that
he poison her! He said he would
bo suspected if he procured the
poison; if Minnie would get the fatal
drug, he .would administer it. She
got a Rmall package of ratsbane while
on a visit home, she says,-and giving
it to Edgar when she r: turned to
Monroe, he gave it to Miss Smead.
with the result we have stated. Min
nie asserts that Rosa sent tor her
when on her death bed, and charged
her with being the cause of her taking
off; and, while she would not expose
her to the authorities, she declared
her purpose of pursuing her throngh
life, and torment her so that she wonld
never have peace or happiness in this
world. At times Minnie will break
out in a series of shrieks, and point*
ing out toward the hills, she exclaims:

national points of her poisoning story
are evolved from a« diseased mind.
The facts, however, remain that Min
nie was in domestic service in a fami
ly in the vicinity of Monroe; that
she was waited upon by Charley
Edgar; that Edgar was engaged to
ho married to » maiden named Rosa
Sinead; that lie fell in love’? with
Minnie and broke his' engagement
with Rosa, and Rosa was taken sud
denly ill and died within a few Honrs,
and that the doctor asserted her
death was caused from poison—a

disappeared from that; region, and
that Minnie returned home about the
same time. The criminal features
are, it is generally believed, pat in by
Minnie when she is flighty, and they
are not credited by those who know
her; yet, there are persons who
shake their heads and say, “ I don’t
know about that.” The girl has
made several ineffectual attempts to
commit suicide by drowning, and
