ted advisers of the party.
It might be interesting to give you an expla
nation of how easily u public man here may be
misrepresented by news gossips and interview
ers—and especially if he be a public man who
is worth misrepresenting, but I have not the
time to do so now.
A few words in conclusion. The political
situation was never so criticnl ns now. Our
constitutional system is on a magazine of pow
der and.ten thousand fools, nnd some that are
not fools, are striking matches all around it.
None but cool men and patriots wlio love
country more than office can avert tlie raott
horrible civil war that ever disgraced nnd de
stroyed liberty and immunity. And yet there
was never less excuse for any war iu the history
of the world.
Snell a war, if it come, will be the culmina
tion of liumim crime in the dastardly destruc
tion of lmir.su rights by a disgraceful scramble
for office!
Iu the Into election both Mr. Tilden and Mr
Hayes received soma votes. Will it not be
better to have either for 1’resident than to have
a ruler who received no votes I Ho is too
stupid for argument who does not see that the
last alternative is possible. Hut whoever may
<.r may not be made President by returning
boards or bayonets, one thing is certain : Mr.
Tilden cannot and will not be made President
unless be is made so by a fair, honest count cf
the votes of the people.
That count can he neither fair nor honest
unless it iie had under interpretations of the
Constitution long accepted and by methods of
procedure long established. The party that
now demands new interpretations, or a now
| form or method of count will be a party in rt-
j beliion and treason against the Constitution,
| the Union and the people.
1 mil, therefore, in lavor of n fair and liencst
I constitutional count of the votes of the people.
I am laboring to secure that count, and tvli n
: secured, 1 shall abide iis result; and so will
I every other man North and South who is not
| willing to destroy his country,
j I am bravo enough lo want peace, but not
