Marriage.
BY JOSn BILUNGS.
Marriageliz a fair transaction on
the face of it. 0
But there iz quite too often .put up
jobs in it.
It iz an old instishun older*than
the pyramids, and az phull of hyro*
glyphics that nobody can parse.
History holds its tongue who the
pair was who first put on the silkfcn
harness, and promised to work kind
in it, thru thick and thin, up hill and
down, and on the level, rain or shine,
survive or perish, sink or swim, |
drown or tlote.
But whoever they waz, they must
have made a good thing ov it, or so
incnny of their posterity would not
hev harnessed up since and drove
out.
. There iz a great moral grip to mar
riage ; it iz the mortar that holds the
soshul brix together.
But there ain’t but darn phew
pliolks who put their money in mat
rimony who could sit down and giv
a good written opinyun whi on earth
they came to did it.
This iz grate proof that it iz one
of them neutral kind ov aksidents
that must happen, just as birds fly out
ov the nest when lha have feathers
enough without being able to tell
whi.
Sum marry for bitty, and never
discover their mistake; this iz
lucky.
Sum marry for money, and don’t
see it.
Sum marry for pedigree, and feel
big for six m< nths, and then very
Marriage iz a safe way to gamble
—if yu win, yu win a pile, and if yu
lose, yn don’t loze ennything, only
the privilege of living dismally alone
and soaking your own feet.
I repeat it, in italics, Marry
Young !
' There iz but one eggsknse for a
marriage late in life, and that »z—a
second marriage.
