THE ATHENS GEORGIAN: MAY 22, 1877.
Mexican Outrages.
Dispatches
from Washington
says: The particular outrages on the
Texas frontier to which the attention
of the Cabinet was called on Wednes
day by the President, are in some
respects different in their character
from those of which there has been so
much complaint during the last few
years. The raids of the cattle thieves
have been mostly across the Lower
Rio Grange, between Brownsville and
Laredo, and in one or two instances
the banditti have penetrated into Texas
to within a short distance of Corpus
Christi, and destroyed houses and
stores. The outrages of which com
plaint is now made have occurred
further up the river, in the vicinity of
Eagle Pass. It seems that a number
of Mexicans have established them
selves on Mexican territory, and en
tered regularly into trade in stolen j
American horses and mules. They j
do not themselves undertake the cap
ture of them, but employ a number of
Indians fer the purpose.
Their plan of operations is to solicit
orders in the interior of Mexico for
horses and mules, and when a suffi
cient number have accumulated to
make an incursion profitable, Mexican
spies are sent over into Texas to dis
cover the position of the United States
troop.', in order that the raiders may
avoid them. Then the Indians are
sent across the river and capture every
horse or mule that they can find and
that is worth taking away. The
owneis are left dismounted, and are,
therefore, unable to pursue the thieves,
or even to give an alarm generally
of attorney for your reception and
general distribution of the amount of
the policy, and it therefore gives me
pleasure, in accordance with their
wishes to see that the money is
placed in your possession. I remain,
Very truly, yours,
Wm. A. Shorter,
President Georgia Department.
Cedartown, Ga., May 1, 1877.
Col. Wm. A. Shorter, Rome, 6a.:
My Dear Sir :—I have this day

the promptness, and the positive

the deceased, was in the city looking
for him. He repoi ted the mysterious
disappearance to the police authori
ties here, and requested them to trace
t up. Anson says he has not heard
from his wife since the homicide, but
she is believed to be in this city
somewhere.
The presence of mind of an actor is
illustrated by the following anecdote in
the Virginia t hronide: Last night
James Ward was playing Myles nn
Coppaleen in “The Colleen Bawn,’’aud
when he pulled his gun on Danny
Maun the weapon did not respond
with a discharge—only the click of the
hammer could be heard. Danny
Mann, however, fell as usual, and
Myles, after he had rescued Emily
O’Connor, pulled out his gun and
went right ahead as follows: “ Be
the powers, them little air-guns is a
great invintion. Ye can blow a hole
in the back uv a blaggard widout
making enough noize to wake a sleepin’
cat; and bedad, the shmell o’ the
shomke is don away wid intoirely.”
The actor’s promptness brought down
the house.

Resolution unanimously adopted, Macon, Ga.,
Nov. 15th, 1875, by the Macon Board of Under
writers:
Resolved, That we fully endorse the “Safety
Parlor Fusee,” manufactured by the American
Fusee Company, and earnestly recommend their
general use. We would especially suggest to
the citizens of Georgia, and to the Farmers and
Planter* in particular, to supply themselves
with the Safety Match, ns their nse wonld un
questionably result in a marked decrease in the
number of fires throughout the State.
Hundreds of testimonials from private families
and others, like the following, can be furnished;
but we‘ have only room for t wo:
Mrpos, Ga., Feb. 18,1876,—This is to certify
tliat I. have been using the American Safety
Parlor'Fnsees in my hotel for the past two
months, daring which time I have, hv practical
tests, given them a thorough trial, and find them
more than 400 per cent, cheaper than the com
mon friction matches. I find that one-half gross
of the Safety Fusees lias lasted me os long as
three gross of the common matches.
K. DUB, Proprietor Lanier House.
We.heartily concur in the statement of Mr.
Dub, as it fully coincides with our experience
in the pse of the Safety Fusees in our hotel.
