of torpedoes. He first used them in
the Florida war to protect an isolated
block-house from attacks of Indians,

and on the road of Retreat to Rich*

torpedoes, he made Richmond and
Charleston safe from attack by water,
and saved Mobile for several years.
His system has been adopted by all
civilized nations, and in the present
Russo-Turkisli war, torpedoes are
playing a most important part. One
Turkish iron-clad has been sunk by
Russian torpedo boats, and both
belligerents are using these dreaded
sub-marine monsters in the Danube.
The Turks have control of the Black
Sea, but the Russian harbors are safe
from attack because the Turks are
afraid of submerged torpedoes. Gen.

Noth.—Having read the manu

paper, I desire to say that the total
number of vessels sunk by torpedoes
in Mobile bay was twelve, instead of
three, viz: three iron clads, two tin
clads and seven transports.

The world indeed is in throes of
tire and marine monsters,
war is looming up between Russia
and Turkey, other nations are striv
ing in guns, iron-clads and torpedo
ships, for maritime supremacy. The
powers of electricity in light-giving
and hcntscontroling to examine and
blind an adversary by its glare at
night, and fire-torpedoes for his de
struction at all times, and the capa

Barff’s superheated steam in indu-
rancc, offensive and defensive, will be
•called into action to re ist the 100-

the Thornycrotl of France, the

advocating a well and favorahlv-

of his State, both in the late war and
in the General Assembly, has en

man perfectly qualified to honor and

ALBANI AND GRANT.
A special performance at the Lon
don Royal Italian Opera was given
in honor of General Grant last night.
The house was filled. General Grant,
Mrs. Grant and General Badeau
arrived at half-past eight. The cer
tain immediately rose, disclosing
Mile. Albani and the full chorus ot
the company, behind whom was a
group of American flags. Mile.
Albani sang the “Star Spangled
Banner,’’ with the full chorus and
orchestra. General Grant, for the
first time since his arrival in England,
was dressed in the full uniform of a
major general.
ROY A L HONORS TO OUR EX-PRESIDENT.
The entire audience rose on the
General’s entrance and remained
standing during the singing, as did
also General Grant and wife. After
the song was finished General Grant
was loudly applauded and bowed in
response. The Daughter of the
Regiment was then performed, with
Mile. Marimon in the principal role.
General Grant was obliged to leave
early to go to the Queen's ball at
Buckingham Palace. The General’s
box was decorated with flowers.
BADKAU’S GUEST.

This unrivaled preparation has per
formed some of the most astonishing
cures that are recorded in the annals ol'
history. Patients suffering for years from
the various diseases of the Lungs, after
trying different remedies, spending thou
sands of dollars in traveling and doctor
ing, have, by the use of a few bottles
entirely recovered their health.

This oertifies that I have recommended the use

bottles have been used by my patient, with the hap
