Greene County Fair.

Dr. E. D. Newton, commercial
salesman of Messrs. 0|xiycke, Terry
Sc Steele, of New York, is again
among us and is as full of fun and
bnmoras in days past. The Doctor is’
enjoying excellent health and never
looked better.
Judge Farish Furman was in the
city Thursday last and dropped in to
-co ns during his sojourn. The
Judge is a champion ot Milledgeville,
and thinks that the capital should be
carried back to the “ halls of our
fathers.’*
Capt. Tom Lewis, who commanded
the “ Atlanta Grays ” daring the war,
and - whose boat* isever-ttr the right
place, spent a lew pleasant days with
his friends in our city during the
week. ' /
Jim Baldwin, Esq-> was also in the
city during tho week. There is a

thusiasm to witut-ss tbe second exhi
bition of this company Monday niuhi.
Tlie programme was one of the best
ever placed before an Athens audi
ence, and the repeated encores which
greeted every artist, ■ attested the
high appreciation in which they were
held by their critical audience. The
music furnished by the band was
excellent i and smooth, and their pro
ficiency in rendering each piece was
highly commendable. The thanks of
onr people are dne to this corps of
gentlemen for furnishing such a fine
entertainment as that given Monday i Lodge of Good Templars assembled
night The cornet solo by Mr. Bums
was real good and tl e singing of the
Misses Dearing, * Martin, King and
Nevett was met with a perfect rip-
remarkable magnetism about this
same Jim that we never could ac
count lor. For instance, (and it is al
ways the case,) just a day or two
before he pays us a visit every friend
inquires of another, “ What has be
come of Jim Baldwin??? We don’t
think he carries a pocket telephone,
with one of the wires hitched on to
Athens, around with him in his trav
els, but it is a fact, that whenever
this question is asked you-are pretty
sure'of seeing Jim in the next tweiv
ty-four hoars, and it is useless to add
that his friends arc always glad

altogether present a landscape fair to
look upon.
Scarcely anywhere in Georgia can
l»e found more picturesque scenery
than abounds in our bill country, and
at no time J« it more attractive than
during tbe present season. One can
hardly realize that the cold, bleak
winds and blighting frosts will ever
come agaiu and destroy nil this beau
ty. But bur artist J* a fickle one,
and ever changing, changing, and
never satisfied.
Our city ia very quiet now, after
the gnyolies of vacation. Both col
leges opened the first of September,
with very full attendance. The Rev.
Prof. Barton, formerly of Virginia,
and a teacher of great experience,
has been added to the Faculty of the
Female College. Parents having
daughters to educate, would do well
to send them to Dalton. This is a
healthy locality, the society intelli
gent, religious and refined. The
college is a commodious brick build
ing, finely situated* and. the instruc
tion thorough. -*•
Dalton seems to have been a fsrvor-
ite placo for holding various public

the beginning was a grand success,
and we compliment all, feeliug that
each one did his utmost on that occa
sion.
The President of the band, :Mr,
W.H. Jones, deserves special men
tion for the admirable manner in
which these concerts have been placed
before onr people. Under his super- j
vision every thing pertaining to the j
exhibition moved' smoothly and
pleasantly. As a manager he is quite
a success,- and - we -congratulate him
and the. members of the hand for the
pleasant evening whom all present
enjoyed aoronch.
His Purchase,
Mr. J. H. Rncker, a well-known
cotton buyer of this city, bought one
thousand bags of cotton in one lot,
last Thursday, for a house in New
York. We believe this the largest
amount of cotton ever bought and
sold the same day in Athens. Athens
ts one of tiie best cotton markets in
the State, and y Jief popularity in this
respect is grou'lng tbiHy. * 'We are in
formed -.that oyer.'fifteen., .hundred
bides of cotton were sold on our
streets the day on which Mr. Barker
filled his large order. We d'dn’t
coitnt the ba cs we saw, but we know
our principal streets were blockading
by cotton wagons all day. Lot the

false syidax, etc. The most intricate
sentences were given by tbe teacher
to tbe scholars to parse which were
analized so perfectly that the closest
critic could not find a single error.
TI»e little grammar class were ex
amined with the large as far as the
relative pronoun. They learned to
read and spell before they could take
up. this stwly, consequently .they
w’ere but a few weeks in it. Tbe
whole school was well posted in al-
mo-t every department. The geog
raphy class contained almost the
entire school, v. - ho hounded first th"
United Slates, the State of Georgia;
gave all the capitals of all the States
and* territories together * with the
capital of the United States. Also
all the large cities, rivers, islands,
lakes, gulfs, seas and continents of
the entire world. Peter Parley’s
history seemed to boas familiar with
the scool as Webster’s elementary
spelling bonk is ever tanglil in ordi
nary schools. Tbe class in rhetoric
reflected great credit tip m themselves
and teacher. I have not time to
give all the particulars l»nt will add
that I don’t think Mr. Jester can be
beat on short methods of arithmetic,
and I hope yon wilt not think I am
extravagant when I say I saw one of
the most difficult examples worked
by his class in Davie’s arithmetic
without making a single figure after
tlie statement, except to set down
the answer. To conclude, Farming-
ton has great reasons to be prond of
her school, and Mr. Jester may well
be classed among the good teachers

educational usefulness.
