THE ATHENS GEORGIAN: OCTOBER 30, 1877
Wendell Phillips has all the indig
nation of his nature aroused against
Grant on aroount cf bis having
charged the late Mr. Sumner vi'li
lying. The inveterate Massachusetts
Radical does not pick his language
either in speaking on this subject,
but boldly asserts that the ex-Presi-
dent was intoxicated when he had
his celebrated conversation with Sam
ner regarding the San Domingo j
treaty. Phillips tells his story in this
wise:
“Senator. Sumner received from
the hands of President Grant the
treaty of San Domingo, and, after ex
amining it for one day, returned it to
President Grant, and urged a recon
sideration of the action of the admin
istration. The President listened in
sullen silence. A gentleman who was
present, whd has been in VVashington
tor forty years, and who came away
with Senator Sumner, said, ns they
oame down the stairs of the Execu
tive mansion: 'What is the matter
with Grant? Do you think he un
derstands yon ?’ 'I should think he
might,’ replied Mr. Sifmher. ‘No, Ed
does not,' was the response. 'He id
in no state to understand anything.
If 'Grant never heard,' continued
Phillips, 'that Snmner took back. In
the chamber of the White House, the
courteous pledge that he trustee
have th$ jrieasuro qF; BUjggrtin§
administration, it was because his
. brain refused to perform its office.
He is no judge of tbe veracity of the
Senator from Massachusetts.' ”
S. C. DOBBS

Brown Drilling, Osnaburgs,
Wool, Jeans, Linseys,
Flannels, Spool Cotton,

^Hosiery, etc., etc.
The story comes from South Caro
lina, by way of New York, that Cham
berlain and Patterson are to esc
prosecution because they “knew too
much about Democrats.” It 'isiiard-
fy credible, remarks the Boston Post,
that democrats were let into the
ring Pfft plundered South Carolina
but if fifty wore implicated in the ras
calities of that set, Democrats every
where in the country will demand
that they be brought out and pil
loried along ivith Kimptoa, Patterson,
Chamberlain!,' Parker and the restT
By all means, let these men be prose
cuted nnd, if necessary, forced to tell
w-hat they know.
Honest men of all parties will join
with the Post in its demand for even
handed justice. Since the exposure
of Radical villainy in the carpet-bag
plundered States, we havo heard
much about "little tin boxes’’ contain
ing evidence of Democratic compliel
ty in Radical rascality. These con
stant threats afford a strong reason
for pushing the prosecutious. Let
justice be done though the skies fall.
