WAjiinNGTCi^. Oct. 22—Gen. Sher*
man returned this morning' from bis
four months’ absence in the Indian
country. In an interview with a
friend to day be said lie undertook
th,Q .trip ;n order that Jig might un-
dWstaiid tile Indian question and its
lxmring on the army, and also to be
able to see for himself the wants and
capacities of the army and be able to
tell from personal observation its
nctqn) condition. ; JU® U» likely that
the General will Inro i(hc result of
liif observation ado® fits views on the
army and the Indians in an extended
report to the Secaotary of War,' who
will transmit it to Congress. Gener
al Sherman has always been in favor
of defending the whites' and their
property and the property of the
United States from .the..Jmliang^by
force, and vftiile notr itetnoHyrin favor
of fighting the Indians instead of
feeding them, he has always advo
cated the theory that the army should
have the sole charge of the Indian
question. He said to-day that lie
belicyed^tlierc would be no further
disthrbanceTn Oregon;‘Sfontana and
the other countries through which lie
passed, and that whatever might )ic
said, the army' had done its duty
nobly. HoSiad a long talk with the
Secretary of War this morning, and-
it is Ascertained that the Governnielli
does not ktiow what to do with chief
Joseph and his baifd now that he has
been caught. General Sherman sayfe
that Jegwlj fought in a Christian
manner?!not taking scalps of aiutilat-
ing the iltypl,-ftpd -he is riot in favor
of killing Inin.' He is, however, op-
posetl ,to, releasing Joseph arid allow
ing him to return to Oregon, on the
ground that he jiiiows too' much of
that eouii’tty'flnd may again become
troqblesopm. A ,,c ' v n j a y
j Still more applications were made,
j and it was resolVed, last month, to
open the hooks again. The list
Madisoa. Co-urrby-
numbers over one hundred, and tne
officers hope to dose the books Avith
two hundred,and fifty names,.iwhich
will be sufficient to settle the ten
thousand acres of land it is proposed
to buy. A representative of the
colony is in Florida, and another, Mr.
Hines, will start to-day to institute a
search into the^title of the land. It
is embraced in an old Spanish grant.
