Senator II. D. McDaniel gave us a
pleasant call Wednesday last, and
repotts everything moving along
prosperously in his part of the conn
try.
Mr. George Mabry, of Madison
yonnty, called at onr sanctum last
Tuesday. George is another ho^
and hominy man, and ne trust he
may realize his fondest hopes.
Mr. E. D. Herring, of the firm of
Robert Lawson «fc Co, dea’ers in
Saddles, Harness, etc , Baltimore, was
in the city on Tuesday.
We were pleased to meet, the
other day, Mr. Charles W. Baldwin,
who represents Porter, Fogg &
Bramlet, one of the largest shoe
houses in Boston. They have a good
trade in this section.
Col. Reuben Acton, of the Consti
tution, was in the city Wednesday,
looking after the interests of that
sterling daily. In consequence of the
late change of schedule on the North
eastern Railroad, that paper is read
in Athens before 12 o’clock on the
same day it is published.
We had a very pleasant call on Fri
day from Mr. Joseph Greusel,
the Detroit (Mich ) Free Press, and
Dr. Win. II. White, of Atlanta. Mr.
Greitsel represents one of the best pa
pers in the union, and, accompanied
by Dr. White, is making a tour of
Georgia for the purpose of giving the
people of the West through the me
dium of the press a chance of beeom
ing better acqnainted with our sec
tion. What they saw and heard here
will doubtless be told iu future.
We were happy to grasp by the
hand, last Tuesday, Mr. James
Anderson, of New York, of the firm
of Anderson, Starr & Co., who pays
us a visit in the interest of his house.
Wo were glad to learn from hint that
his h .u-e is doing a good business in
tii s part of the country. As Mr.
Anderson is a native Georgian, having
spent his earlier years in the good old
Democratic county of Wilkes, and
being identified with the growth and
prosperity of the State, our business
men generally would do well to givo
him their orders for any goods in his
line.

The extra of last Friday quoted
the following, which appeared in this
column of last Tuesday: “ In that
list‘of names we not ice that a few of
the ‘ horny-handed * are sandwiched
with the banker and capitalist,’’ and
in the comments thereon, this
eacoet/ies scribendi, says: “ And we
know of some people who, 4 once upon
a time,’ were not unwilling to shake
these “horny hands’ and ask the
votes of their stalwart owners. w As
this is an indirect fiing at the Hon. II.
H. Carlton, and to take the wind ont
of the sails ot this would-be journalist,
we rise to explain, and insist, tha:
Mr. Carlton knows n > more what
appears it: this column than the gen
eral reader. In calling the signers
“ horny-handed’’—as this trained
neribler seems to be ignorant of the
meaning of the words—allow ns to
-:<;v, that we intended to convey to
tin- reader that^4 few of the honest
yeomanry of this country had signed
the petition, and** furthermore, that
we ridiculed the absurd idea that
Col. Yancey, with his kid gloves,
gold-headed cane and eye-glasses rep
resented the workingmen of this
town. We belong ourselves to that
ass who 44 live by the sweat of their
brow,** and those that know ns will
hear us out in this assertion. If th
mechanics and artisans want one of
the bone and sinew to represent
them, why not take some one that
directly identified with the indns-
rial interests of the town and county
ind not one from the bloated aristo.
rats that claim to represent that hon
orable class.
Now, we must not be understool as
objic'ing to Col. Yancey on account of
his position in society, for had he been
presented through the proper channel,
it would have afforded us great pleas
ure to have advocated his claims to the
people—the humbler classes included
But the fact that he has education and
talent, does not qualify him to better
represent the people than a man whose
circumstances in life make him in full
sympathy with all classes, especially
when that man is presented by the or
ganized Democracy.

A Model Farm.
Men well versed in farming seience
have always known and long con
tended that Southern farms were too
nrge—that the policy should he, as in
New England, to cultivate less and
nnke the ground very rich. A strik
ing evidence of the wisdom ot the
plan is given by Messrs. Gann &
Reaves who, this year, bad in culti-
vat’on within the corporate limits of
Athens, 85 acres, from which they
gathered the following products ;
Wheat, 300 bushel-; corn, 1000
bushels ; potatoes, 350 bushels; peas
200 bushels; 35 two-horse wagon
loads of pea-vine bay; 40 two horse
wagon loads of forage corn, and 4
large pens shucks.
In addition, they have raised, and
will have ready to kill at the proper
time, 2000 lbs. pork.
Now let our less successful farmers
learn a Usson ; and instead of having
so much money invested in stock with
which t o cultivate large areas, with i he
additional expense of labor, let them
diminish the acreage and work their
lands richer.
The following is a list of the registered vo
te.s of the city of Athens up to the closiug of
the books on the 20th.
