[Washington National Republican.]
Georgia is a Republican State by a
large majority when its people are left
free to exercise the right of suffrage
according to the dictates of their own
convictions and judgments. Through
outrage, intimidation and a senseof
desertion, the^Republican party in that
State has become inert, inactive and
inefficient, until the State has been
regarded as substantially Democratic
But this is not the fact. The Repub
lican party there is not dead, but has
suffered from a general paralysis or
action. I begins to show signs of life.
The appointments by a Republican
President of Democrats to important,
positions, instead of Republicans equal
ly qualified for them, has had one good
eflect. It has aroused the Republi*
cans to a sense of the wrong done their
cause by this departure from accus
tomed paths, and they are clothing
themselves with new energies and new
activities.
The Atlanta Republican, which has
been an able advocate of the Republi
can faith, but which has been suffering
from severe discouragements, is put
ting on its armor for a fresh contest in
liehalf of the right, with the following
declaration of principles and purposes:
“ Important as the work already
accomplished by the Republican party
is, other work hardly less in magnitude
remains lo he done. The people must
ite taught that the American Republic
is a nation, not a confederacy. Life
and property must be protected. Edu
cation bv the State must be placed
within the reach of all the people.
Free speech and a free press must be
guaranteed. The ballot must lie guar
anteed and protected. The ways and
means for promoting the material
prosperity of the State should be dis-
cussed, such as agriculture, commerce,
manufacturing, mining, internal im
provements, a homestead, and strict
economy in the public expenditures.’’
The Rejmblican willl do yeoman’s
service in behalf of Republican prin
ciples and policy relating to its own
State and the nation at large, and is
deserving of the most liberal support.
