Southern railroad, from that citv to
the Kentucky river, \v!i«ro there is I
said to he llie highest rnihoad hridee
yet built. It is 275 feet high, having
three spans, the miiiiUe one B7E teet
long, and the others 300 feet each,
the total length being 1,125 feet.
There is a bridge in Switzerland
which is 254 feet high, but with a
span only 144 feet long, and one at
Varrngus in the Andes, 252 feet
high, with spans 125 teet long. The
piers of t he Kentucky bridge are the
largest in the country, excepting
those of the New York and Brooklyn
bridge, the stone wotU beirg 130 by
47 feet, and the base of the iron work
117 by 28. The frame is all wrought
iron, ar.d was built out from the abut
meuts toward the center of each span.
The fastening of the junction point"
was accomplished in a novel way.
One sunshiny day having expanded
the framework, the connecting bolts
wore fastened,.and so much secured;
then a second day of sunshine liavitig
given all the expansion the bridge
was capable of, the holts were made
fast permanently. At the opening,
the other day, - Che hrifTge was made
subject to seven severe tests, and
stood them all admirably,
