Cartersville, July 6, 1876.
Bartow Democratic Mass Meeting.
The State Democratic Executive Committee,
of Georgia, havihg decided to call a State Con
ventior, to te held on the 2d day of Aliens!
next in the city o! Atlanta, to nominate a can
didate for Governor, and to choose Presiden
tial electors.
The Executive Committee of Bartow county,
hereby issues its call to the people of the coun
ty, to assemble at the Court House in Carters
ville, Saturday, July 20, at 11 o’clock a. m., te
select four delegates to represent Bartow in
said convention. S. W. Eel and,
F.il. Ford, Sec. Chairman.
THE ATLANTA COMMONWEALTH.
The above paper of the 30th ulf.
contained a scurrilous article in re
gard to The Express— so much so
that it is scarcely entitled to a reply,
but we make it. The editor became
exceedingly offended at the last issue
of our paper about something, and
saliied forth in the heat of the day
with a most violent tirade of abuse.
He did not state the cause of his hot
indignation, and we are left to inter
that lie was mad because we had the
temerity to publish a statement of
certain rumors we have heard from
time to time, of a Smith-Cojquitt al
liance, not formed by those gentle
men themselves, but in the shape of
a sort of tacit understanding between
their friends respectively. We did
not make any charge at all. For
this we are much abused, if such ar
ticles as the Common wealth's amounts
to abuse.
It will be remembered that the
Johnson movement has been de
nounced as a “swindle” and “fire
brand,” and the friends of that gen
tleman as “dark-lanterned conspira
tors” and many other epithets we
do not now call to mind. None have
been more relentless than the Com
monwealth in the war upon the John
son movement. Every number
it has bristled day after clay with
hitter denunciation of gentlemen who
preferred to see Mr. Johnson the
next Governor, while many of these
regarded Colquitt as their next choice
This has gotten up a most bitter war
of 'sords between the friends of John
son and Colquitt, exciting the spirit
of retaliation on the part of the for
mer, which is met by the Common
wealth in a spirit of inflamed and
senseless denunciation. And we say
this course has driven off many John
son men from Colquitt as a second
choice.
In the article of the Commonwealth
condemning The Express in such
low-flung language that we do not
propose to reply to it in kind, the
feeling of malignity towards Judge
Johnson and his friends is not at all
concealed. Even the so-called “se
cret circular” signed by the incor
ruptible C. J. Jenkins, W. T. Wof
ford and others, comes in for further
abuse. We are perfectly willing to
be associated with such pure men in
being the target for vituperation. If
they are “conspirators” we are happy
of their number, and are willing
are their fate in the crusade of
", nds of Gen. Colquitt against
John3on - If thf y are
pitmen* > that we may
always he m Su/ ,
-v- * n Rgoori company.
Now, we tell tip 1 * .
„ . ~ ~, ' ommonweufh in
all candor that there ... ,
. a wide-spread
belief that the friends „ 1 .
quitt and Gov. Smith are v e °
gether in this campaign and M
feet sympathy with each other; ..
in making this statement no one has
been denounced as “conspirator” or
“plotter.” What we said of certain
papers is aTact believed by those fa
miliar with the press of the State.
We gave the rumor of the alliance as
we hear it spoken of wherever we
go to Atlanta or elsewhere. We said
our statement of that rumor m ight
mean something or not. It was
enough to call the attention of the
Colquitt press to the fact if they de
sired to refute it. 'that is the head
and front of our great offending. It
is all—no more and no less.
As we have said, we do not intend
to reply to the Commonwealth in kind.
We care nothing for its vituperative
abuse. Everybody knows its editor
to be an impulsive man who often
acts violently in discussion and then
regrets his rashness, The Express
has in no instance been half as severe
upon the Colquitt movement as the
Commonwealth has been towards the
Johnson movement. The Express
has no where and in no instance in
dulged in personal abuse of any of
the aspirants for Governor and their
friends. The worst we have done
is that we have dubbed the Colquitt
party as the Kirkwood mutual admi
ration society in a political sense and
spirit of humor as everybody knows.
In this we had no reference whatever
to “the ladies and gentleman of
Kirkwood, who are quietly and res
pectably attending to their own busi
ness.”
The truth is, an attempt has been
made all the while to ignore, ridicule
and brow-beat the Johnson move
ment —all because of a desire to see
that distinguished gentlemen the
next Governor. No attempt has
been made to force him on the party.
He sets up no claim for the nomina
tion nor does he seek it. He remains
at home in attending to his public
duties, merely stating in the most
respectful terms and in the spirit of
patriotism, that lie would consent to
serve the people as their Governor
if desired. This he has said in reply
to a number of distinguished gentle
men who addressed him upon the
subject, among them some of the best
Democrats in the State. These have
been denounced as “consprators” etc,
cause Mr. Johnson seems to be a great
obstacle to the nomination of others.
In conclusion, we have to say that
we siiail endeavor to keep cool and
calm, and allow the other side to in
dulge meaningless vituperation and
personal abuse. We care nothing for
nreats, but snail go 01 in theevei
tenor of our way. Such effusions a
the one to which we reply is doing
'ood for Johnson, because its ani
mus is so illy disguised that its pur
pose is glaringly exhibited.
In the meantime we trust tin
Commonwealth will take the brick
out of its hat and apply a lump o.
ice to its temples and survive the
heated term. The weather is becom
ing very hot now. and it is no good
time to fly into a passion. The Chev
alier Bayard of the Atlanta press
ought to keep very cool. His i*n
ravings are no more regarded than
are the mutterings of fish women.
TILDKX AND HENDRICKS.
The nominations made at St. Louis
last week are enthusiastically receiv
ed everywhere. While other distin
guished Democratic statesmen had
numerous friends, ardent and true,
it soon appeared that the nomination
of Mr, Tilden was the strongest that
could he made, which was done with
great enthusiasm on the second bal
lot. The nomination of Mr. Hen
dricks for the second place was one
that will carry great strength with
it, The ticket as a whole, in our
opinion, is the most available one
that could have been made. We
shall support it cordially, and pre
dict that every Southern State will
be carried for it except South Caro
lina.
The platform is a strong arraign
ment of the Republican party, set
ting forth in strong language its cor
ruptions and a necessity for reform
in the administration of the govern
ment. Its reference to the recon
struction question, however was un
necessary, and we do not endorse
that portion of it; but taking the
ticket*and platform as a whole we see
no reason vhy all good men may
not now rally around the Democrat
ic standard and bear it in glorious tri
umph in the defeat of the most cor
rupt political organization that ever
existed in a free country.
What we want now is unity and
harmony in the Democratic party.
United under the rallying cry of re
form and down with corruption,
there is no reason why the next Pres
ident and Vice President may not
be Tilden and Hendricks. We
throw our banner to the breeze, roll
up our sleeves and step forward to
give our little influence and labor to
the end that Georgia shall roll up a
majority of fifty thousand for the
reform crusade.
a half sheet oni^'.
Printers are always patriotic about
the 4th of July. Indeed, they are
generally gloriously so. It is the
custom of the rural press everywhere
in this country to suspend two weeks
in the year—during Christmas week
and Fourth of July week. These
weeks printers claim as holiday sea
sons in which to enjoy the on.y ri
creation and rest they have during
the year. Printers are hard work
ing p-e-.n-10,
in the course of the year they will
have.
We this week, by persuasion, have
induced 'Trie boys” to "give a half
sheet, though it contains but little
reading matter. We hope our read
ers, therefore, will see the point and
not complain. The Express will
come out all right every week until
Christmas. In the meantime, we
shall continue to present one of the
largest and best weekly journals in
the State.
We have reason to believe that no
one condemns the “bogus ticket”
more than Gen. Colquitt.

FROM NEW YORK.
We are permitted by a friend, to
extract from a private letter of the
22nd ult., just received by him from
an influential gentleman in New
York as follows:
“Our city is supremely dull and
almost in a state of collapse. The ill
gotten gains by the late war, are
melting away from the hands of the
Republicans and war party, like
snow in summer time —and what is
left of them will have to build asy
lums for their pauper brethren to
keep them out of the streets, provid
ed the Democrats succeed in electing
their candidate. The South and the
West must join nands, for on this
depends tire victory of the Democrat
ic party.
Hayes, in my opinion, cannot get
the vote of New York, nor even
Pennsylvania, if the Democrats nom
inate the right man, as the people, on
both sides, are getting disgusted with
Republican rule. I believe another
four years of Republican financiering
and stealing, with the resumption of
specie payments, would utterly pros
trate the country and fill our charita
ble institutions, If twice as large,
with paupers.
