UPS AND DOWNS.
What legions of friends always bless us
When golden success lights our way;
llow they smile when they softly address us
So cordial, good humored and gay.
Hut oh! when the sun of prosperity
Hath set—then how q tickly they frown, *
And cry out in tones of severity,
Kick the man, don’t you see that he’s down!
What though when you knew not a sorrow,
lour heart was as open as day;
And your friends, when they wanted to borrow.
You’d oblige and never ask them to pay.
What though not a soul you e’er slighted,
As you meandered about through the town,
1 our friends became very near-sighted
And don’t seem to sec you when down.
■\V lien you’re up, you arc highly exalted
And traders all sing out your praise;
When you’re down, you have greatly defaulted,
And they really don’t fancy your ways,
1 our style was tip-top when you'd money,
So sings every sucker and clown,
But now ’tis exceedingly funny,
Things are altered because you arc down.
Oh, give me the heart that forever
Is free from the world’s selfish rust.
And the soul whose high noble endeavor
Is to raise fallen man from the dust!
And when in adversity’s ocean
A victim is likely to drown,
All hail to the friend whose devotion
" lift up a man when lie’s down!
FARMERS’ HOUSES.
Mo3t ewry farm house contains
what is called the best room, and
which is only used on extraordinary
occasions; it being almost wholly
closed not only to the members of
the family but to the sun and light.
Now it strikes us that the most con
venient, agreeable, and for that mat
ter, the most pleasant room in the
most pleasant room in the house,
should be selected as the family
room. Let it be ever open, and when
the work of the kitchen is completed,
let the mother and daughters be
found there with their appropriate
work. Let it be the room where the
lamily altar is erected, and consecra
ted to neatness and purity. Let no
hat ever be seen in that room on the
head of its owner; let no coatless in
dividual be permitted to enter it. II
the father’s head is bald, his daugh
ter will be proud to see his temples
covered by the neat and graceful
silken cap that her own hands have
fashioned for him. that table
which has always stood under the
looking glass, against the wall, la
wheeled into the room, its leaves
raised, and plenty of useful books
and periodicals be laid upo it.
When evening comes, bring on the
lights—arid plenty of them—for sons
and daughters, all who can will hr
most willing students. They will
read, they will learn, they will dis
cuss ihe subjects of their studies with
each other, and parents will often be
quite as much instructed as their
children.
LIFE A GAME OF CARDS.
Man’s life is a game of cards. First
it is “cribbage.” Next he tries to
“go it alone” at a sort of “cut, shuliL
and deal” pace. Then he “raises”
the “deuce” when his mother “takes
a hand in,” and contrary to Hoyle,
“beats the little joker with her five.”
Then with his “diamonds” he wins
the “queen of hearts.” Tired of
“playing a lone hand” he expresses
a desire to “assist” his fair “pattuer,”
“throws out his cards,” and the cler
gyman “takes a ten” dollar bill out
of him on “a pair.” She “orders
him up” to build fires. Like a
“knave” he joins the “clubs,” where
he often gets “high” which is “low,’*
too. If he keeps “straight” he is
sometimes “flush.” He grows old
and “bluff,” sees a “deal” of trouble,
when at last he “shuffles” off his
mortal coil and“passes in his checks,”
and he is “raked in” by a “spade.”
Life’s fitful “game” is ended, and he
waits the summons of Gabriel’s
“trump” which shall “order him up.”
HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
In icing cakes, the knife should be
frequently dipped into cold water.
Cool rainwater and soda will re
move machine grease from washable
fabrics.
Parsley eaten with vinegar will
remove the unpleasant effects of eat'
ing onions.
If your coal fire is low, a table
spoonful of salt thrown on it will
help it very much.
A teaspoon full of turpentine boiled
with your white clothes will aid the
whitening process.
Cakes, puddings, etc., are improved
by making the currants, sugar and
flour hot before using.
A spoonful of stewed tomatoes in
the gravy of either roasted or fried
meat is an improvement to lovers of
tomatoes.
