The communication from “I/,” will lie over till next week nt tlie au thor’s request. —We have a goodly amount, of correspondence this week. Read all the communications. •—The farmers of our county are determined to plant enough grain to do them this year. - -There are many of the forest t rees which are budding, and every thing betokens an early spring, —Mr. Jacksmi will soon have ids worksii ip finished, and lie will be ready to receive any work in his line. —Yesterday was a lovely, beauti ful day. The sun shone forth in all bis splendor, and the weather was just cool enough to bo pleasant. —Alas! for the young hunters! The robins are nearly all gone from our borders, and they will have to shoot birds at long range again. —For a good hotel we commend the Barlow House of Americus. We Lave tried it and we know. See advertisement in another column. —The streets of Buena Vista arc a’most deserted, because the farm ers are busy preparing and planting and have no time to come to town. - —lf you have any money that is itching in your bauds, and you owe us for subscription, you might jusl as well pay us up. We won't refuse it. -—Tho people of Marion coun'y mast lie very well behaved for we have hardly a local item this wick that lias any reference to cimiua' 'offences. —fur columns are lcplcle this week wiih good reading matter, and we don't think you will be throwing away that two dollars you owe us— when you pay up —Strangers who come to Buena Vista gen rally go away under the ■impression that wc have a set of the cleverest people in the world—and they arc net far mistaken. —Be very careful will your fires, f>r the March winds have be* n upon us during the pas week, amt fire would be uncofttro'lable jus l at this time, should it get uud< r way. —What wc want i to be b ibed j by about two thous ml men-, at t!i“' rate of $2 each, to publish a pood paper, and you may be. u; e we will not be ashamed •f it it nl. at aI. —Rev. L. C. Kerr, of Buena Vista, and K. 0. Simmon-’, of Amcricus, to be found in another column, and take pleasure in recommending both gen tlemen to the confidence and patron age ot the public. —The Debating Club met at the Academy on last Monday night, and passed off an hour or two very pleas antly. The debate was quite lively, and the affirmative gained the ques tion. It was : “Should there boa law compelling military education ?” The Society promises to be one of great interest. —The public roads of Marion and surrounding c (unties are being worked and placed in thorough re pair. Some slight changes have been made in two or three of the roads, so as to straighten them or give them firmer ground. Mr. Mun ro lias improved his lane greatly by making it perfectly straight. --We yesterday received the fol lowing note which wc take pleasure ia giving to the public: All hail to the three young Mr. Donnins, who unsolicited, mounted horses after the heavy rain on Tues day evening, and followed a man of 73 years and helped him up the Sumerlin hill with their own strong arms, which ho could not have as cended, with loaded waggon, without aid. Long may they live to bless the world with their generosity. A Beneficiary. To Our Delinquent Subsrcibers. Last week wo sent oiil to those of our delinquent subscribers, whom we c< u and notseo personally, a statement of past indebtedness to us, with the re quest that, they pay us up by the 20t h inst. We did this because wo havo pressing need for the money, and nt that <ime we expect to erase irom 01 r books the names of all subscribers, who havo not, by that time, paid us iu advance for tho Ano US through the summer. Necessity compels us to lids course. We have been sending our paper to a very large, list of subscribers, who have not paid us. This has been done at a heavy expense to us, which wc are no longer able to carry, We cou’d not continue this expense through the summer, if we would. The times are hard, and everything used in a printing office mist be paid for cash. The Aik,us is now (lie best coun try weekly published in the State. A comparison of it with any newspa per coming to this office or this town will prove the excellency claimed. We intend to keep it up to, and if possible surpass, its present high stand. Spring Has Come. The buds, and violets, and leaves and musquitoos are putting forth and guano breathes lornl in the air ; the leathered songsters of the woodlands pursue the early worm, and warbleth their warbletcs—it must be Spring! March cavorts over the land and windeth his windy horn, while the soaker smiletli on the “crooked,” to brace liis system. The “doodle” diggetli a pit in tho sand to entrap tlie insect, and the bumble-bee uin - blcth on the plum bloom —now, amt it Spring. The thunder rumblcth in the dis tance and the lightning playcth in the clouds ; the fires lappeth up dry grass ns a dog lappe h up water, ■ nd winsome wife strolceth the beard oi her husband and msinualeth for a new bonnet—don't say it is not Sprng. The oats, Hie bafly, tlie wheat and ryo and the farmer that p'antoih all cotton, are all green in the field, and the plow routeth up the fallow and he new ground. The cow 10-eth o the hillside aim the litile niggers walloweth in the sand—do you i}t*ib! its being So ing ? The green grass pccpech out in the meadows ami ftierchatrs faces groweth long at the counter. The uild goose hawks high and the Greenbacks have ilown to the NorLn, and not one left to i ipc on 1 lie farm —don't this iook like Spring? The ice is broken up on the lake, and the Bankrupt is broken up in the store. The lambkins gamboleth on the green, and the cotton buyers gambleth in the futures. The ant si arpcirei li his sting for the approach of the sluggard and the supplier on time doubtelh the price of bacon and corn—this has the physique of Spring. The dog-wood spreadetb its while blooms in the swamp, but cotlon spreadetb not its white fleece in the warehouse. Silence breathes lang uor in the streets of the city, and the idle clerks sucked the heads of the ivory tipped canes.—if these are not,Jwhat are signs of Spring. The wise lien layetli a cream like egg in her nest, and the watchful housewife crietli “shot” to the hawk. The fountains of spring gush crystal streams, and the spring poets gush emetic doggerel.—These arc symp toms of Spring, The sky looks blue in the heaven and the times looks blue on the earth. The landscape is happy in the dis tance, and the future looks happy in commerce. Thcquandam merchant 0 goctli afisbing, to “take” the Any customer of the crc eks, and the edi itor looketk longingly for the cash subscriber and fiiidetti him not There is a muchness of quiet in na ture an “biz.” —If this aint spring, let the rocks hide us when it does come. -—Dull times are timos for men to advertise to make times better. —There are times to be merry and times to bo sad. It tills lias any ref erence to anything in particular wo don’t know anything about it. Mayor's Reception. The Mayor, on Calling the Council to order, announced that the present meeting was rather an experience or enquiry meeting, and that the inv - ted guests would be called in their aider, to give in their experience ns to their success in doing nothing for a living. Mrs. Olivia Wooding consort of Mr. Opossum Wooding was the first name called. No appearance. Sent word by a friend, however, that she was out so. king employment; Be ware, Olivia, the eyes of the Philis tines be upon you. Louisa B.—ln answer to tlie question of how arc you getting along, answered, “tolerable 1 thank you.” “But what are you doing for a livoing?” “Oil, yes sir, ; I am liv ing with aunt Hannah”—not tho Hannah that had something to mat ter with her, but Mrs. Hannah Bur rice. She boasted that she had pro visions plentiful, since Christmas, had bought peck of potatoes, one shoulder and half gallon syrup for her self and child, was out of employ ment. His Honor hinted that lie thought country air would be good fur her complaint. Can 1 na B.——enters tlie sanc tum sanctorum. Stilly very and somewhat indignant, a lady of ele gant leisure, but iias two sons hired out to support, her in idleness. Oh didn’t J> are field cut a dash As she left doui dur white trash, Hut when >ho was recalled again She didn’t display so much disdain. Mrs. or Miss Mary L appears in answer to tiie call. Somewhat in dignant, and a little bit mortified— said she lived on her own resources; had worked, if she was not working now; had means, notwithstanding she got no pay for last year, the year before, and. year bifirc that. Poor thing, little did she know that this spiteful announcement would mike out against her (ifon trial) a No. i Case. Scilla Pitts is going to the country as soon as her money gives out, and said it was about out now, boards with Mrs. Barcfiel, same place Mrs. Olivia Wooding lias been siopping at, said she had a very dear brother that gave her money whenever she called for if, has no intention of spending 11 io summer in town. Isaac Bushin, Emma Peterson, Becky Burrill, Lizzie Freeman, .Susan 8., and Luisa Evingham, all sable specimens of the At dean decent, were called in order, and after good ad vice by the Mayor, were dismissed. This meeting I hope will be long remembered ar.d I think our worthy J/nyor did right to call it thereby fa mi iarizing the ignorant with ordi nance No. 29—t00 much thieving is going on, and a stop must be put to it let the cost be great or small; too many idlers iu our little town.
