Hfr, Frank Buckhtml. who conveys
n.sinieiion more agreeably limn jiny
natural is*. of the day, thus uxplaina tbo '
manner in which the oyster builds lus
shell:
The body of an oys l it in a poor, wean ;
thing, apparently' iiwnpabla of doing
anything at all. Vet wlitit. a nmrvulons
house an oyster builds around his deli
rate frame. When the oyster is first
horn , he is a very simple, delicate dot, |
as it, were, and vet Ins is born tviili bis j
shell upon him. For some unknown
reason he always fixes himself on hi
round shell, never on his Hat shell, and
being once fixed he begins to grow- -but
be only grows in summer. Inspect an j
oyster shell closely, and it will he seen
that it, is marked with distinct lines,
.As the rings wo observe in the section
of a tree denote its years of growth, so
does the marking oil an oyster tell us
liotv many years lie has passed in bis
“bed” at the bottom ofllie sea.
Suppose an oyster under inspection
was born June 25th, 1870, lie would go
on growing up to the lirst lino we sue
well marked, ho would then stop for
the winter. In the summer of 1872 lie
would more than double Ids sine. Jn(
1872 ho would add to this house. In
1573 and 1871 ho would go on building,
till be was dredged up in the middle ot
bis work in 1875; so that he is plainly
live and a half years old. The way in
which an Oyster builds his shell is a
pretty sight. 1 have watched it fre
quently. The beard of an oyster is not
only bis breathing organ, /. <?., bis
lungs, but Lis feeding organ, by which
lie coueeys die food to his complicated
mouth with his four lips.
When the warm calm days of June
come the oyster opens his shell and by
means of his beard begins building an
additional story to bis bouse. This he
does by depositing very fine particles
of carbonate of lime, till they at last
form a subsiance as thin as silver pa
per, and exceedingly fragile. I lien he
adds more and more, till at last the
new shell is at least as hard as tiie old
shell. When oysters are growing in
their shelfs they must be handled very
carefully, as the new growth of shell will
cut like broken glass, and a wound on
a finger from an oyster shell is often
very poisonous.
A coRBESnoNDtNi of the Columbus
Enquirer very appropriately remarks:
“Many are nescient ol the impletion of
our glottologv and are acquiescent with
a mewed thesaurus, when one so polyge
nousis purveyed for their exception, by
■which they may adumbrate any iutellec
tion which they uppete to use in confa
bulation or employ in a monograph or a
pandect. If any are recusant of this
nuncupation, redargue it in the explica
tion of this scantling, without the coadju
vatic.V of a glossary.” It is, perhaps,
needless for us to add that we have for a
loo" time been of the same opinion, but
hesftated to express it, knowing qf " hat
fools the intelligent public is composed.
Speaking of the Charges that have
been made against Gov. Tilden, the
Springfield an independent
Republican journal supporting Hayes
and Wheeler, says: ‘‘We don’t regard
those a 1 ready made as furnishing reason
why anybody feeling f so disposed’should
refrain from voting for him.” Every
charge made against Gov. Tilden lias
been"blown to the winds, and he stands
before the Atncrean people today with
a character as pure and unspotted as the
driven snow.
A water nymph, by name Ida
Steele, of Bloomington, 111., has
challenged her sex generally for a
ten mile swim down the Mississip
pi river. A Miss Pauline lias ac
cepted the challenge, and so has
a third young lady; and the match,
it is stated, will certainly c< me oil
at an early day. It is predicted
that “there will not be steamboats
enough to contain the crowds that
will flock to see the sport.”
Mr. Win, Cull n Bryant, having
hcen telegraphed to, at his home
in Massachusetts, for permission to
give 10 the public the letter ho re
cently wrote to a gentleman in
New York in favor of Hayes and
Wheeler, has sent answer back
that he decidedly objects to its
publication, bui for what reason he
docs not say. After his recent clam
or for reform, he may well be ashamed
ot his letter in favor of Hayes and
Wheeler.
Taft is about to issue a circular
defining the duties and rights of
United States marshals in the com
ing election in the South. The
rights of the people are not to bo
considered. The duty ot a United
States marshal is to mind his own
business, but it is not likely that
Mr. Taft will find a .Republican
precedent for laying down that
principle.

TDK POLITICAL CAMPAIGN 01? 1870

active and hotly contested of any rineo the ino
movable canvass of]8(i0 is now fairly opened
The National Democratic Party will this year
make a hold, vigorous, and doubtless successful
struggle for the maintenance and supremacy Of
those principles which are vital to the prosperity
of the llcpublie and essential to the well-being
of the people.
In addition to the Presidential election, the
people in Georgia and Florida will elect new
Stale governments. In Florida the campaign
promises to he unusually vigorous, and there is
a probability that for the first time since the
war the people of that Radical-ridden State Will
elect a Democratic State government. In these
campaigns the people of file South are deeply
interested; and every intelligent citizen, who
has the welfare of his country and his section at
heart, should acquaint himself with every detail
of Ihc great work of redemption and reform tha !
is now going on.
To this end he should subscribe to and assist
in circulating the Savannah Morning News, an
independent Democratic news pa per, ofproc on ne

paper that is recognized everywhere as the best
daily in the South. Its editorial department is
vigorous, thoughtful, and consistent, while its
