In 1857, ilio , jieoplo of Austin and ils vicinity were nmeli cxe.ito'l lv a i<-|>ort tliat a volca no bail U jrst forth front tiro side of a mountain near lire Llano tivor, about fifty miles northwest from the capital, and not far fix rn the Colorado. The smokivissunn from it could be distinct ly seen for several weeks, when the air was calm, from any conspicuous cnii liunoo at a distance of titty or sixty lniteH. Hover a I persons visited the spot, and brought me specimens from the burning crater. 7be geological forma tions of the neighborhood are very in* teres ting. The Llano Mountains are granite. The old sedimentary lime stones ttpheaved by the granito have been changed into marbles and the crumbling sandstones have all been dis integrated and perforated by numerous invents, through which subterranean streams run and issue in great springs, like those of Austin, San Marco*, and Han Antonio. The whole region is un dennindod with caves, liko the part of K.ntueky intersected by Green river where the Mammoth Cave is situated. Into one of these an Indian pursued a boar, lightning bis way with a torch, which ho threw down upon the floor of the cave near the entrance when ho left it. The floor was heaped with the excre ment, of the countless numbers of bais which had inhabited the cavern tor many centuries, and which payed thick ly all the passages. I examined one of these eaves, much smaller, near Capt. Merrill’s place, thirleen miles northwest fiom Austin, and found this matter ac cumulated in the chambers under the stalactites upon which the flocks of bats clung while sleeping. In some places I supposed the deph of the accumulations to be ton or fifteen feet. It was com posed mainly of the wings of mosquitoes, living ants, and other indigestible parts of various noxious insects. Mingled with the niter which abounds in these caves, it forms a very combustible fuel; and it was a vast deposit of tins com pound in the extensive cavern mention ed and set on fi.ro by the Indian’s torch which formed the artificial volcano which for several weeks in 1857 alarmed tlio citizens of Travis, Hays and Burnet counties. The depth and quantity of the light ashes left by the lire made it im possible to explore the cavern without t!m risk of being suffocated and buried alive wbeu I was in its vincinity. I have no doubt that the material in its crude condition, or its ashes, would rnwko a valuable manure for the lands of that part ofTexas. A visitor at the Exposition, (lining at u French restaurant, meekly intimated when his bill was presented lhai his boil ed egg contained a chicken. The polite waiter said that he would have the bill corrected, and soon returned with a new bib, upon which the charge of 30 cents for “eggs" had given place to an item of 00 cents for chicken. This note from a Chicago girl to her lover was made public through a law. suit: “Dear Sarnie, Pap’s watermillions is ripe. Come and bring some poetry like you brought afore. My love for you will ever flow like water running down a later row. Bring a piece as long as vour arm, and have a heap more about them raving ringlets ami other sweet things. Come next Sunday and don’t fulo me.’’ Two persons were oueo disputing so loudly on the subject of religion that they "awoke a big dog which had been sleeping on the hearth before them, arid lie forthwith harked most furiously. An old divine present, who had been quietly sipping his_ tea while the disputants wore talking, gave the dog a kick, and exclaimed: “Holdyour tongue,,yon silly brute! You know no moro about it titan they do.” They were walking along canal srect, and one of them was silt mg, “1 courted her for two yearn, and now that I am married at last, I confidently anticipate a life of - edition,’’ Ire cried, as lie stnbbcd Iris toe against, the raised edge of a flag stone.
